Borrowing for cruise question?

I was told that you can borrow points up to two years ahead for a Disney Cruise.

For instance, I am looking at a cruise in January of 2007 and I have an April use year. Does that mean I can borrow points for both 2007 and 2008 for the cruise?

Thanks.
Joe

Since you have an April UY, your points are good from April 06 to the end of March 07. This means you could use your April 06 points and your April 07 points but not your April 08 points.

You can use up to 3 years worth of points by banking and borrowing. Bank 05 points and borrow 07 points to use along with 06 points.

Hope that makes sense.

you may want to consider bank and then rent... depending on your timing and mix of txs (kids vs. adult).... or a combination (e.g. points for adult & purchase kids).

Cobbler,

Thank you for your reply. I also thought that I could not use more then 3 years of points.

But, a friend just told me to look at my online statement on the DVC members site.

Under my 2008 use year it states:
Total Annual Allotment of Vacation Points 280
Total Vacation Points Remaining 280
Total Vacation Points Available to Borrow 280

* The Vacation Points above reflect the sum of all of your Contracts under this Member ID. These Vacation Points are from the Use Year two years in the future.
* Total Annual Allotment of Vacation Points is the total number of Vacation Points you receive on the first day of each Use Year.
* Total Vacation Points Remaining is the number of Vacation Points in this Use Year you have not yet used.
* Total Vacation Points Available to Bank is the total number of Vacation Points remaining from this Use Year that you can bank for vacations that take place in the following Use Year. If you have Vacation Points transferred in, they will not be displayed here.
* Total Vacation Points Available to Borrow is the total number of Vacation Points remaining from this Use Year that you can borrow for vacations that take place in the previous Use Year.

But for my 2009 use year the last line says something different:
Total Annual Allotment of Vacation Points 280
Total Vacation Points Remaining 280
Total Vacation Points Available to Borrow 280

* The Vacation Points above reflect the sum of all of your Contracts under this Member ID. These Vacation Points are from the Use Year three years in the future.
* Total Annual Allotment of Vacation Points is the total number of Vacation Points you receive on the first day of each Use Year.
* Total Vacation Points Remaining is the number of Vacation Points in this Use Year you have not yet used.
* Total Vacation Points Available to Borrow is the total number of Vacation Points remaining from this Use Year that you can borrow for a Disney Cruise Line® vacation that will take place in the previous Use Year.

Any idea what that means? My friend tells me since you can book a Cruise up to two years ahead they also allow you to borrow two years instead of just one. I do not see how this is possilbe.

Each year is still governed by the usual rules for borrowing. That is just a summary of the points that are currently available in your account but their use will still be dependant on the rules regarding their use.

Are you certain you can reserve a cruise 2 years in advance? Usually that has still been restricted by the 11 month priority, just like all other non-DVC options. Cruises may be reserved for cash thru DCL, but usually not thru DVC until 11 months ahead except for special programs like the Med Cruises that will begin booking this Tuesday.

Enjoy!

As per the DVC members site:
• You may bank up to 100% of your Vacation Points for Member ID number 6*********** until the end of September 2006.

• Currently, you may request a reservation for a Disney Cruise Line® vacation that has a sail date on or before April 2, 2008.

• Currently, you may request a reservation at your Home Resort for vacations that have a check-out date before March 2, 2007.

• Currently, you may request a reservation at any Disney Vacation Club Resort for vacations that have a check-out date before November 2, 2006.

• This Use Year's remaining Vacation Points for Member ID number 6*********** will expire on the last business day of March 2007.

Looks like you'll need to check with MS. That is a recent variation from the usual way reservations have been allowed in the past. Please report back when you find out about borrowing 2 years ahead.

Good luck!

Keep in mind that even though your cruise is in January 2007, it's still in your 2006 use year (4/1/06 to 3/31/07).

Well after three days of trying I was finally able to speak to MS about borrowing for a cruise more then a one use year ahead.
I was told that you CANNOT borrow more then one use year ahead for a cruise. I then mentioned how it was stated on Members Only site, well after a long hold I was told the answer was still NO.
When I asked why it was even stated I was told that MS had no information on that. She did venture to guess that maybe the rules were going to change but clearly stated that was only a guess on her part.

I think you have to look at the booking and borrowing separately. If you wanted to book an Apr 08 cruise with Apr 08 points and banked from Apr 07 points and borrowed points from Apr 09.

Or they may let you book an Apr 08 cruise if you had enough Apr 08 & Apr 09 points to cover it.

Has anyone tried it?

I just asked this question of DVC in general terms for exchanges and was told that the points have to aggregate in the use year in which the travel would take place. The example given was a cruise for Dec, 06 with a Dec Use year. The points would have to come from the Dec Use year 2006. Thus the max you could get together was 3 years but you might have less if you didn't bank or used some of the 2005 use year. I proceeded to inquire about exchanges that were made 2 years out which could easily be in an otherwise unreachable use year from a points standpoint. I was told they could take the points from a current or the next use year but no further.

Based on this info, I would assume that any cruise or exchange that happens in a use year you can bank or borrow to, will use points in that use year. If by chance you have to cross over 2 use years to do so, my info suggests you'd still use the next use year, the one that ends just before the exchange option.

On a side note, ALL the points have to be in one contract and it appears, also all in one use year ultimately.

It states previous year so basically it seems like any other borrowing guidelines. It does not say two years anywhere on it. :confused3
