So Ive been borderline for amost 7 months now. I have swicted up my diet and have cut out alot of junk and sweets. Now my problem is eating:
Breakfast is usally around 9, lunch at 1130 (both times are set my job), a snack at 230, another tiny snack around 530 (to hold me over on the walk home) and then dinner around 7. Ive been trying to have a snack around 1030 due to the fact my sugars drop way too low at night (i can feel it and It tends to wake me up). So far im up everynight by 4 feeling hungry, sweaty and like im going to pass out. Im so sick of loosing sleep to have a snack (usally peanut butter toast). Any suggestions for a good 1030 snack so I dont wake up?

Hi!
I am also borderline and have almost the same schedule as you. I was advised by my nutritionist to have something with protein before I go to bed to help tide me over. It has worked pretty well so far. I found myself going from meeting to meeting and skipping lunch/breakfast and not eating until I was home. Boy did that screw up my system terribly. I now have oatmeal for breakfast, a veg/protein/bit of carb for lunch, a bit of protein/small carb for snack and a smaller dinner when I come home. I know it sound goofy but I have found myself eating a turkey sausage link or two with a couple of crackers near bedtime - it has helped with that early morning dive. I was going as low as a 50 reading in the am and that was not good.

Her rule of thumb is to have protein with a carb to help it process differently. Also, I had and have to monitor my glucose levels daily and chart them. This has helped me know what works and what doesn't.

Hang in there and I hope this helps and this is just works for me, some people may be different. I have other issues that my NUT had to work around as well. :)

humm protien, yea! that means more peanut butter. Breakfast and lunch isnt my choice, its what im served. Most time breakfast is pretty ok, lunch is harder because there are many vegitables I can digest. what makes a good afternoon snack (the one before dinner)? I find myself eating crap food since I am leaving work (chips, fruit snacks) but want to start eating better. I never knew how hard this was!

Hi Funky-
My daughter is a T1 diabetic and we frequently have to give her a snack before bed to prevent those early morning lows. We have been told to make sure that her snack includes some fat- peanut butter crackers are always great, we also give her cheese and crackers. I've also read that mini tacos are a good alternative as well as english muffin pizzas. Hope this helps.

I was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic in January, which I thought could not happen to people my age since I thought that it was a children's disease so I do understand what a tough time you may be having. Long-term habits die hard; don't they? I really love bread, and all carbohydrates are the same as far as the pancreas is concerned. If you really want to lay off of the sweets though, the most effective way is to eat the recommended 5 per day of fruits and vegetables. That way you won't have the stomach left to be eating junk food, and I read somewhere that the typical U.S. diet is a shocking 26% junk food!

I have found that nuts are a great snack for keeping my blood sugar from dropping too low. They have carbohydrates and the healthy kind of fat to slow the absorption of the carbohydrates.
