I hope nobody has already posted these questions although they most likely already have but I searched and could find any posts.

My questions are: I'm about to buy into DVC but I have one fear, bookings, how often do you guys get blocked out or heard about people getting blocked out of their home resort even if they book out 11 months in advance? Second question is how hard is it book a room at a non-home resort at the seven months out. I am afraid to go ahead and spend this kind of money and then all of a sudden I have no place to go come vacation time. My job doesn't have all that much flexibility as for moving around vacation times. I would hate to wait until seven months out to book my vacation not at my home resort and then find out I'm locked out of everywhere. Lastly, can you book your home resort at eleven months and then try for somewhere else at seven months and if you get it cancel your first booking for your home resort so you don't get stuck with nothing? So, are these unfounded fears or do I have a reason to be weary. Thank you so much for your help with this.

Yes...DH & I do it all the time.

And about your 7 month question....our home resort is SSR.
We stayed there last May for our 1st DVC trip.
We've done 2 more trip since then, booking SSR at 11 months, & then switching to a different resort at 7 months. Never had a problem switching.

late July/early August 2007: BCV..no problem at 7 months out
Dec. 20-26 2007 AKV: this resort was new, so we didn't book at 7 months, but booked whenever they opened to other DVC members besides owners.

We've already got July 28-Aug. 4, 2008 booked at BCV...no problem getting it.

Most of the time there is no problem getting your home resort at 11 months. But you do have to be careful during very busy times. Recently someone posted that they waited a few days after the 11 month window for New Years Eve and was waitlisted.

In over 8 years of being a DVC member, I've never not been able to get a reservation I wanted except for 1 time when I wanted to book a room about 3 weeks before (last October). I usually make my BWV reservations at 10 or 11 months, once I got a standard view at 7 months. I made OKW reservations at 6 or 7 months. I once got a BCV reservation for 1 night about 1 week out.

Had your same reservations about purchasing last month. I ONLY want to stay at VWL while at WDW (for the next 5 years) because of my 3 and 2 year old so I considered purchasing VWL to get the 11 month window. However, considering the xtra years + less maint cost of SSR, I was recommended by my sales rep to buy SSR ONLY IF I was flexible on the dates of travel to ensure I could get into my VWL 2 bdrm. Made reservations this month to stay at HHI and VWL in 2bdrms (10 nights total), no issues whatsoever. Didn't even need the 7 month window. Also, MS told me that 1bdrms were available every week in May at that time. Good luck on your decision.
