If you are staying DVC, or trying to rent points, its 11 months for home resort.

Depends on what time of the year you are hoping for. Here right now and a cast member told me this week of presidents day is one of the busiest of the year and the resort is at max capacity right now. I think most of the spring is ok, but anytime schools are out are a bit nuts. Dinner reservations were booked most of the week and chairs are a hot commodity.

If you are not booking DVC, you don't necessarily have to worry about missing out on a special rate, so there is no good reason to wait. We booked through my Disney travel agent friend last Aug, for this coming May/June. When a new special came up that was better (the 30% off thing going on now), she was able to switch us to that and get a $50/day resort credit. We always book Disney trips through her b/c she keeps up on all of the specials for cases like this, but this was the first time it worked out for us! She does that stuff all the time for clients going to DW (although it never worked out with our dates); we're happy Disney does that across the board. I would assume they will work with direct bookings, but might be a decent idea to go through an agent.
