Edinburgh Is definitely recommended over Glasgow. I live just outside Edinburgh and studied in Glasgow and while Glasgow is a really vibrant, cultural city, Edinburgh is just more appealing. Beautiful architecture, great history, the castle and just a better tourism infrastructure. It’s only an hour from Glasgow. Heads up, Greenock is a typical port town and not pretty in the slightest so you really need to go on an excursion. There are good transport links from Greenock to Glasgow and then very regular trains right into the centre of Edinburgh if you wanted to DIY it.
I agree that Edinburgh is a better city to play tourist, I have been to both twice. The Castle, the Royal Mile, etc. are easy to walk around and see and just a great city. If you've never been to Scotland, I'd do Edinburgh if you have a chance. But...we hired a private car for our family of 4 (cheaper than you might think) to see what we wanted from Greenock. Our cruise had a stop in Edinburgh so we knew we were going there later. We really enjoyed Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. The nice surprise for us was Doune Castle and a great lunch in Doune. You may recognize Doune Castle from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "Outlander" tv series, or the original Winterfell in GoT (although for Winterfell this was a stretch to see a resemblance given all the CGI).
IMO, Dublin is an easy city to do on your own. Very walkable, with plenty of cabs if you need to go farther distances.
For Belfast, the whole Antrim coast has GoT filming locations but is one of the prettiest drives I've ever taken, better than Hwy 1 in CA and right there with the Amalfi coast of Italy. Plus, most tours from Belfast take you through the area where the Troubles occurred and the Peace Walls are, very interesting and great, more recent history lesson.
