Book room only or entire package when waiting for discounts?

We plan to go to WDW in December and I pretty much know what we would like to do regarding room, tickets and dining packages. I don't have and AP or AAA membership but I hate to pay rack rates so I am crossing my fingers for a Visa or public discount.

Should I book the room only and then add on the rest if any discounts come out? Or should I just book a package now and hope that it matches up to any discounts offered later. Looking back at the history of discounts they offer, it seems that they offer room only and package discounts at the same time.

The CRO I spoke to told me to book the package because it's only a $200 deposit compared to a one nights stay deposit for room only. I just want to do what's best so that if a discount comes out, I'll be best prepared for it.

Let me know what you did and how it worked for you. Thanks!

did you have them tell you what the difference would be w/an AAA discount? AAA can get you discounts on tickets and the room rate, and only one person in the room needs a card, so it might pay to join.

if you are waiting on some sort of discount, i would personally just book the room. You can always add the other stuff later (i think they like to have about 3 days notice to add the DDP). But making it into a pkg gives you a lot less flexibility and you start to incur penalties after the 45 day mark if you make changes or cancel.
