book recommendations?

I did like Time Travelers Wife as well. I didn't think it was that graphic though... I thought the premise of the book was really intriuging.

I didn't really think it was bad but remembered someone posting that they thought it was so wanted to include that. Decided my Mom would have agreed. Depends on the reader.

I'm reading City of Fallen Angels. It's by the same author as Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Very good, non fiction but reads very easy. It's about Venice.

Do you ever mourn the loss of a book when youre done? Sometimes Im sad, especially if its been a series, to know that I wont read anymore of that character. Is that strange? LOL

I also recommend the Outlander series. They just released the 6th book in the series and they are all around 1000 pages so they will keep you occupied for a while.

I stayed up last night finishing the latest one. Is it the last of the series? It's still kind of open ended but cleared up a lot of the mysteries that had been hanging around for a long time. I hate to let Claire and Jamie go.

This morning, I started one of Sue Townsend's books, The Queen and I. The premise involves the Royal Family being kicked out and forced to go on the dole. I just read a couple of chapters this morning but it's pretty funny so far. Sue Townsend is the author of the Adrian Mole books which I also recommend as highly amusing!

Suzanne's Diary to Nicholas...James Patterson
The Redemption Series by Karen Kingsbury or anything by her (a little on the religous side, but not too bad)
Good in Bed and In her Shoes (same author but can't remember who) Neither are trashy

Jennifer Weiner wrote Good in Bed, and I recently read a newer one called Little Earthquakes also by her. Very good read.

It is probably best to consider each one as the last one in that series. Gabaldon writes very slowly, so I wouldn't put it past the situation that I'll be six feet under before each next book in the series is published.

Actually, since The Fiery Cross I have found it very difficult to read her. She professes not to be a writer, and up until then I thought it was false modesty. Since that book, I've started believing her a bit more.

I really like the Hannah Swenson series by Joanne Flukes.

This is a series of books based on the life of a small town baker who unfortunately finds a series of murder victims and is forced to solve the crime (helped by an interesting cast - her mom, dentist bf, cop bf, sisters, and baking partner.) This is a great series and - My favorite part- the books include recipes for foods she makes in her bakery.

I always enjoy the Nora Roberts books. Light reading, without too much romance....

I highly recommend Memoirs of a Geisha. I read this a few years ago and thought it was excellent. I believe the movie is coming out in a few months, so this would be a great time to read the book!

The Kite Runner was one of the best books I read in a while. Just finished it.

Currently reading The Red Tent because of several Dis recommendations. Can't put it down. It actually inspired me to pick up the Bible for the first time in a loooong time.

For those who enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha, I just finished an autobiography entitled Geisha, a Life by Mineko Iwasaki, the woman who "inspired" Arthur Golden in his Memoirs book. She's suing him for something or other (slander? can't remember).

Anyway, it's a great read and puts to rest a lot of misconceptions regarding geisha. Because it's a translation, it can get a little muddled, but I still couldn't put it down.

Oh, and OP, my recommendation is Inkheart and its sequel, Inkspell, by Cornelia Funke. It's officially a young adult novel, but it's SO GOOD. The story is about a man, who is a bookbinder, and his daughter. The man has the ability to read characters out of books, but a problem is that he can also read people INTO the books as well.

I would have to agree The Kite Runner is one of the best books I've ever read, and they are going to make a movie about it soon. So it's good to read the book first!

I absolutely love to read, I read about a book a week during the whole summer. Other reccomendations include:

The Secret Life of Bees- Sue Monk Kidd- A real chic book, very heartwarming tale, full of mystery & intrigue. About a young girl who's trying to uncover her dead mothers life.

Disgrace- by J.M. Coetzee- A south african setting, about a professor filled with desire that lands him in trouble and retreats to his daughter's home in the country. About human relationships, father0daughter, man-woman, black-white. Very entertaining book.

Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn, for those who love literature, it consists of written letters to different people living on an island community with Nevin Nollop as their hero (the creator of the panagram A quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog)
Very zany book that will make you laugh about tolitarianism.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Pi Patel and his family are aboard a ship emigrating from India to North America. His father is a zookeeper and the boat is full of animals. But when the ship sinks he's starnded in a life boat with a hyena, orangutan, zebra & a huge tiger. This tale is a life and death adventure. I loved this book.

Bee Season is another great book, about a little girl and a spelling bee genius and also about her complex Jewish family. Great read!

OMG The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (sp?) covers both romance & history! They are all incredible books but the first one is outstanding! Also, I have to say The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Once again romance & history!

OMG! Those are exactly the 2 series I was going to recommend!

I read a lot of books this summer and they were all very good. I wish I could read books twice (I get bored if I do or I tend to just skim rather than read) so that I could read these again.
My favorite was A Bend in the Road by Nicholas Sparks.

I forgot, I have two other books that I love. The Christmas Shoes and its sequel, the Christmas Blessing. They are both very good, but somewhat sad. I read the Christmas Shoes on a plane and I tried so hard not to cry. LOL. BTW, The Christmas Shoes is the one based on the song of the same name. You know, the one about the little boy who was at the store and was buying a pair of shoes for his mother who was dying. He didn't have enough money, so the stranger behind him payed for the shoes.

I am pretty sure there is going to be at least one more book. One her website it says that the series is going to end in 1800 so that is at least one more book.

For historical romances I think the best author ever is Kathleen Woodiwiss, everything she has written was outstanding.

I'm on a totally different tangent right now, DH has a collection of DragonLance books, with characters along the lines of Lord of the Rings (Elves, Dwarves, etc) and the first was great. I've just started #2, he tells me there are at least 6 with this group of characters.
