Obviously I will ask my sons dr at our next appointment to confirm but I was just wondering if any of you use bonine or dramamine for your kids. My son will be 5 (3 weeks from being 6) on our Jan cruise. Last time we cruised he was 22 months old and while he was fine on the cruise he threw up a few times when we got off the ship. I do not think he was sick but do think he just got the moving feeling when we got off the ship. It passed within 24 hours but I would like to avoid it this time. We're going to disney for 6 days after the cruise so I'd like him to be able to ride the rides etc.. with no issues.

Thanks!

Hey Jessie... I'm a pharmacist, so here's the deal...

Bonine and Dramamine Less Drowsy (meclizine) are only for kids >12
Bonine for Kids (cyclizine) is for kids >6
Your safest bet is Dramamine(dimenhydrinate), good for ages 2+

ALWAYS ASK YOUR PEDIATRICIAN before you do anything, because I obviously don't know your son's history. And always flip over the box to look at the active ingredient, since, as shown above, common brand names may actually have many different formulations.

Hope this helps any moms out there! :thumbsup2

DD was a few weeks shy of being 6 when we last cruises. She had no problems; however, I also wanted to be prepared. Our pediatrician said we could give her a half or quarter dosage of Bonine. She is 49" and 55 pounds, so he said half should be appropriate for her weight. However, we never had to use it...

Our 5 year old wore "sea bands" the whole trip. They are like sports sweat band bracelets that have a pressure point stimulator that eliminates sea sickness. NO pharmaceuticals for our kiddo & NO seasickness!!
(Got them at Target in the pharmacy department!)

I have the child that gets motion sickness. Even if it's a school field trip on a bus, he has to take medication. His first cruise was on Disney at the age of 5. We gave him a "half" of Dremamine. They are easy to pop into on the line.

My kids are 7 and 10 and they just took a half of a bonine each before a fishing trip on the lake. No side effects at all. And no sleepiness either. I plan on starting them the night before the cruise to be on the safe side.

Thanks! Good advice. Does the dramimine make them tired normally?

Yes, any of these *can* make you drowsy, especially the Dramamine. They are all antihistamines (think Benadryl), which can knock you out. However, some children have paradoxical side effects, so it may make them hyper. You may want to try out a dose before you go!

We noticed motion sickness in my daughter at 9 months old. We can not drive more than 15 or 20 minutes without her getting sick. So we give her (doctors advice) 1/4 Dramamine anytime we go anywhere that isn't a super short trip. She never seems to have any side effects and she is almost 17 months old now. I keep wondering if I should and even would be able to get her a sea band to go with the Dramamine during our cruise in October, as 'double' protection.

Personally, I've had great luck with ginger chews from The Ginger People." Sailors have been using ginger to avoid sea sickness for hundreds of years.

I have used Dramamine on my 5 year old. I used half it did make him very tired though but better then getting sick. I am curious about the Ginger chews might try those next time. Have a great trip!
