Would you choose to attend a church where the sermons include racial bigotry?

If so, why?

If I was a longstanding member of a church, and on occasion a minister who I knew well and generally respected was passionate about a specific topic and got carried away, I don't think I would worry about it too much. I would probably walk out thinking, "WOW, he was wound up today". While I might not share all of his opinions I would hope that I was intelligent enough to glean what I could from the message, and discard the rest.

Unfortunately people seem to think that Obama and family should have found themselves a new church...one that would only teach what they wanted to hear, I guess.

How many parshioners can you hear clapping, and 'woo hoo' -ing?? How many of those people dont have the common sense that you personally feel you have when it comes to a Reverand going banana's and talking anti-american with a slew of other things???

This is a man that should be thought of to be looked up to. A true example of a "Christian" correct?? ANd THIS is what he preaches??

Gimme a break - seriously. This defense of him is becoming more and more bizzarre.

That too. Why is it impossible for him not to harbor some (or many?) of the beliefs (they're in his autobiography) of his pastor (the man who inspired the book)?

I never said it was impossible. I am sure they have some common beliefs. Most Christians do. However, Obama has publicly denounced the sermons that everybody has a problem with so it would seem to me that he doesn't share those particular beliefs, but some of our fellow posters don't quite believe that. They say he lied and contradicted himself in his speech, when in fact, he did neither. They say he should have left the church the first time their was a controversial sermon. I say that controversial sermons can be very thought provoking, so maybe stirring things up from the pulpit on occasion can have a positive effect.

Really, nobody seemed to have any problem with this guy for 20 yrs, until one member of his congregation decided to run for president. Nobody seemed to care when Obama was running for the senate, and these sermons have been videotaped for the past, what, 15 years? The mindset on here seems to be what my mother told me as a teenager: "You are the company you keep". I find it odd that voters didn't seem to have any problem with the company Bush Sr &Jr were keeping with Bin Laden and selling arms to Sadam., but Obama was supposed to march out of a sermon. Go figure.

I don't consider what he said to be Anti-American. Wasn't everything he said the truth? All of those things that he said America did in his G.D America sermon. Were they all lies? Did America not do any of those things?

Nah, you didn't cause AIDS. But maybe if the victims were not primarily poor minorities with drug habits and/or working in the sex trade industry there might have been more done, more quickly. I think that was the real message.

Admitting you're sarcastic shouldn't really be used as an excuse to do it, imho. And I notice you don't seem to appreciate it much when the tables are turned, but, as you say, that's who you are. Carry on.

Which part is true? None of it.

It's a matter of opinion whether droping the bomb in WWII was a good idea or not. Probably will be forever.

Becoming a drug addict and becoming involved in the sex trade industry was more than likely by choice. A bad choice. So what you (and Rev. Wright) are saying is that through inaction, the government caused aids to spread. Is that what you're saying?

Really? That's odd...I could have sworn that in these 84+ pages several posters have been villefying Obama for not leaving the church. They are claiming he is guilty by association, simply because he happened to attend the church where Rev White preaches.

I can't imagine how anyone could claim that Obama and his wife share all of the opinions of his preacher, especially since he publicly denounced them.

Go ahead and grasp at straws.

As a serious potential presidential candidate in the USA, was there ANY chance he was NOT going to publically denouce these opinions?

He doesn't. He doesn't even know if any of the sermons were racist.

But I absolutely do enjoy watching the racist label being applied to Obama's church, but no mention of the racist past of the Southern Baptists. Of course, the Southern Baptists did apologize for their defense of slavery in 1995. Yup, 13 years ago.

Now, how many Southern Baptists do you think attended their church week after week knowing their church believed slavery was somehow connected to godliness until 1995.

So, truly I find this entire discussion amazing considering how many skeletons there are in the religious closets.
