"Bomb Cyclone" Weather Event

Okay, I do not mean to hijack this thread into a Market Basket tribute, but it's the best! As long as you're emotionally prepared for the crowds! Strange there aren't any in the Western part of the state? My SIL is South of Boston and she doesn't have one either - she wants to go on field trips when she visits!

Okay, back to thunder snow!

I must be the lone dissenter, because I live near the Pawtucket, RI Market Basket and I just don't get the hype?! The prices don't seem cheaper than my local Stop & Shop (Attleboro), and every time I stop by the pizza/prepared food area, nothing looks that appetizing. Tell me what makes Market Basket so much better than the rest!! (I'll also go to the Whole Foods in Cranston or Trader Joe's in Foxborough, but Stop & Shop is my "everyday" store.)

We got about 14 inches and I'm ready for it to all melt and winter to be over!

I only recently discovered MB. It's not the closest grocery store for me, but it's waaay cheaper than my local Roche Bros, has a wider selection than the not-quite-as-local Trucci's, and is much closer than Aldi's.

There is "something" besides the the prices, though, and I think it's the spirit of the place. The cashiers are friendly and it was just so "Christmas-y" lately - really happy decorations, and my bagger was even wearing a musical Santa hat.

(That said, I go when I have a weekday morning off. I will not shop there on weekends, because it's soooo packed!)

I definitely don't think you're alone, lol! I know lots of people that will NOT shop at Market Basket! And a lot of times it is a bit bananas and a hassle. We have a Whole Foods and a Stop & Shop - that are much closer to me; we had a Trader Joe's that I loved but it closed. I go to the other two at times - Stop & Shop if I'm short on time and only need a few things...I will say that on a number of occasions I have seen the Stop and Shop cashiers shopping at MB! Okay, so why I like it...

ETA: I also agree with @PollyannaMom about the selection, plus you can find some hard-to-find things there too...
  • I do find the prices are lower than our Stop & Shop for the same items/brand. Maybe it's different in different locations, but I either have to use coupons or catch things on sale at S&S and they're often still higher priced.
  • I find things are fresher at MB, but it may come a "price" - my local MB is generally pretty crowded, so they're restocking produce and the like all the time! Very often if I grab a couple of things from S&S, something I purchased has gone bad and needs to be returned or thrown out. Again, not sure if our S&S is just not as busy?
  • I find the employees at MB to be fairly invested, generally speaking. Many of them have been there for many years and have moved up the ranks. My understanding is that the company treats its employees well and it seems reflected in how they interact with customers.
  • They tend to play music that I enjoy and they don't seem to mind when I sing aloud. In all fairness, I'm sure S&S wouldn't mind if I sang there...

On a more goofy sentimental note, I shopped there as a child with my mom, who passed away many years ago, and it always reminds me of her! Also, I mentioned upthread about the documentary about the 2014 strike - it's really interesting from a business standpoint even if you're not a fan, lol!

I too am ready for winter to be over!

Wow! We're definitely neighbors - I'm about 10 minutes down the road! Hope you still have power! I think the Bruins were postponed...

Yep the B's were postponed - we are season ticket holders! I guess my DH said the lights flickered, I was at work earning our cruise money:dancer::drinking1

The best thing is it the only place to get Reese's Peanut Butter by the jar. The butcher at Whole Foods is the best. I hit the Lynnfield one once a month.

I LOVE the meat at Whole Food's...we're also on a huge bok choy kick and it's the only grocery store where I can reliably find it. (Not sure why the location of my preferred Whole Foods was starred out?! It certainly isn't a bad word haha.)
