Boma Trepidation

sunnyday123 - good for you for finally giving in and learning to eat like an adult. It certainly opens up a world of possibilities when travelling, socializing, and making healthy choices. Obviously I did not use the right tactics, as I tried to bring him around. It didn't help that his own father was only marginally better. I have read recently that this can be genetic, but I prefer many of the non-scientific terms I have applied over the years. :rotfl2:

At this stage in life, I just take comfort in the fact that the same, uhhh, "determination" has kept him from ever smoking a cigarette, or developing any desire for alcohol. While I often think it would be really nice to enjoy a glass of wine together, I ALWAYS have a designated driver when I find myself in the position of drinking for two! And he's good-natured enough to help friends get home safely, as well.

JennyDrake, I know it is going to be an extravagance for him to eat at Boma, but if he is willing to hunt down enough to make a meal and be pleasant company, I am going to pay for that dinner with a smile on mine. Luckily, I have a bit more time before the cancellation window closes, and we will talk about it. If he shows reluctance, he can get take-out some evening and relax in front of the resort tv while those of us who love new dining experiences dive into the boboti and zebra domes.

I appreciate the comments, too, about the menus being dumbed down. Sadly, it isn't just WDW, but a North American trend. You have to look hard and have good advice when searching for ethnic and local specialties. I still shudder to think what Pillsbury did to the croissant! My dream is to travel to other parts of the world, savouring regional cuisine and culture. Guess who will be staying home on THAT trip.. ;)

My FIL is somewhat picky...not quite that picky, but pretty picky. He had a hard time at Boma. The rest of us liked it.

However, if we were to go with my ILs again, I would only book Boma if we were staying at AKL. I, personally, would not book it if we had to travel from another resort or if it was our first night meal as a family.

Boma - here we come! You guys are great and very reassuring that a plain meat & potatoes guy will be able to enjoy a meal while those of us who like to have our tastebuds tickled a bit will be laughing all the way to the Zebra domes.

Even my teetotalling DD is looking forward to tasting these - LOL. :yay:

Those Kenyan Coffee tarts look amazing.

10 days to take-off and 11 days until Boma. Getting so excited now I have to remind myself to breathe.

The Kenyan Coffee tarts are amazing !!! The Zebra Domes get all of the hype, but like the tarts better--- and the best pressed pot in WDW !!!

MMMmmmmmmm...great coffee! I am a huge coffee fan, and just as picky about my java as DHS is about his brand of peanut butter. I admit to lusting over the pressed pot option. Which just introduces another element of confusion in my befuddled brain.

Do I have the coffee and stay awake or pass on it and get a good night's rest for the RD in the morning? I almost booked Boma as a breakfast ADR instead of dinner, based solely on that coffee. It is a shame I am the only coffee drinker in our group, or several of us could have enjoyed a taste of the good stuff without being awake around the clock. Yes, I would have to drink the whole thing myself, if it was a s good as it sounds. I am like that.

Bless your heart OP. I have zero patience dealing with picky eaters such as your DH. I just couldnt do it.

He is but one of 6. No need for the rest to go without because of one person. Make the reservation and if he's still hungry after then he can go to the Mara and get something else.

I agree with this!! :thumbsup2

duh...trust me, my patience has been tried through the years but I have a sneaking suspicion that the reverse is more than true.

The Serenity Prayer echoes in my head about accepting the things that I cannot change and I am finally starting be able to tell the difference between those I can and cannot change. It took a l-o-n-g time.

DH is willing to go back to WDW with me yet again, although I know his ideal vacation would involve playing or watching sports, or both. In return, I will try to squelch my desire to lecture (or scream) about his culinary preferences. Gee..."culinary preferences" is a nice way of putting it. Makes pickiness sound worthy of respect, even! Far, far, FAR from the reality. :lmao:

I was at Boma last Sunday night Sept. 7th for dinner. In line in front of me was a gentleman who appeared to be a "meat and potatoes" eater. He got beef from the carving station and then mashed potatoes & gravy. I saw him in line a few times getting more of the same. He seemed very happy.

I suggest letting your husband look over the food once you get there and then he can decide if he wants to eat there or not while the rest of you enjoy it. It is perfectly acceptable for someone to be at the table with others but not order dinner. One of my friends did this once when we were there. She just wasn't hungry enough to justify spending the money only to nibble. She still ordered a drink. The CM was very helpful and asked her if she wanted anything a la carte, like some soup. They may even offer to bring something from Mara, which is where he would end up eating anyway if he does not eat at Boma. But you can all still enjoy one another's company. Boma is one of my favorite restaurants at Disney, and just hanging out there can be fun, soaking up the AKL atmosphere, people watching, and being happy to be on vacation and on property. :)

This would work at a menu table service, but it's my understanding all guests must pay full price at buffet locations. Presumably, this is to prevent people from saying they're not eating and then hitting the buffet anyway, or sharing from another plate that gets refilled twice as often. . If someone's actual experience differs, take their word for it, but that's how I believe a Disney buffets work.

That makes perfect sense, yet my experience was different. Perhaps not all CMs will accommodate people the way ours did that night. He even brought us some print-outs of the recipes for dishes we really liked. Now I know why the soups I like so much are so filling. :)

Oops! Sorry, I don't know why but in a Boma thread I somehow took your story to be general rather than specifically at that restaurant. Clearly, if you've been there yourself with this experience, you know better than I do.

I was finally able to secure an ADR for our 5th evening, following our planned day at AK. This had been my original hope, but the only options had been for too early or late for us. Thanks to all the DIS discussions, I knew to keep checking.

By then, I wouldn't feel nearly so bad if DH decides he'd prefer the Mara. I know there would be at least one DGS dining with him. It also giver us a bit of time to acclimate to what is shaping up to be the hottest weather we've ever experienced. After a day or so, we may find that a large meal is just not even something we can face. Looking at the forecast, I can see us eating a lot at our vacation rental...while partially submerged in our pool.

We just had our "One week to Go" celebration, with Mickey waffles, etc. Hard to believe it is almost here. Everyone is excited and babbling about old favourites and new attractions to be tried.

Where's the "like" button??? :thumbsup2 Have fun!

I am also considering Boma with some picky eaters. Can anyone tell me what Mater Paneer, Fufu, and Bobotie are? Thanks

I opened this thread thinking no issues because my husband managed to eat there and so did my father.

However both of them are ok with seasoning as long as you can find those seasonings in your typical small american supermarket without touching the international aisle (so basil, oregano, salt, garlic onion and mustard powders etc are all good... but no curry powder or more exotic items like that)

The pickiness from them go in different directions. Dad will eat vegetables but his big thing is no ethnic foods. This includes mexican (no tacos), asian (Wouldn't do teppan edo, no chinese food etc), etc. However a ceasar salad, A pot roast with potatoes, carrots and onion, fish chips, etc are good

My husband is as clothes to a carnivore as you can get. He has no problem with ethnic foods he just doesn't eat most vegetables, many fruits, or any fish. However Tacos are good (they only have meat cheese and salsa on them though) Teappan Edo is good but 3/4 of the veggies never leave the plate, etc.

You seem to have both those issues in one person... that would be tough.

We did Boma this past July and I was really excited but very letdown and I am not a picky eater at all. I am a very adventurous eater and am use to eating lots of "exotic" cuisine. I ended up just eating mac & cheese and mashed potatoes to fill myself up. I did try just about everything (except a few of the soups because I don't particularly like eating hot soups in the middle of summer). But needless to say everything seemed to be on the sweet side but lacked spice. My fiance liked it ok but he wasn't over the moon about it. We went to Boma for our "date" night, I could never justify taking the kids here (picky eaters who would just eat nuggets and mac& cheese) for the price.

But Ive heard of some picky eaters being able to have wonderful filling meals at Boma. It just isn't for us. YMMV.
