Boma Trepidation

I agree totally.......I wouldn't even allow a 5 year old child to influence a restaurant decision for five other people.
The menu at Boma is very varied, with something to suit most everyone's tastes....pricey, but well worth a visit IMHO.
If he really can't bring himself to at least keep an open mind, and try a few new things....then how is he ever gonna know for sure whether he likes them or not?!!!!
I'm afraid, if he were my husband, he would be eating a burger in The Mara....alone.....whilst the majority enjoyed a fab dining experience in Boma!!

See, this is why I bailed and went to Mara. After the first time, I felt like it's too expensive for me not to enjoy it any more than I did. I didn't care if the others spent the money if they liked it though.

This is why the menus at WDW are dumbed way down, any hint of any spice whatsoever sends so many running for the door. And if there is any non-Anglo-American spice two-thirds of the diners turn up their noses. I did not find Boma spicy, but your description of your husband would lead me to believe there is very little for him to like, if anything.

I can't even imagine the stress of tryng to plan meals around this. Why should 5 other people suffer and eat the diet of a coddled 5 year old? He's grown!

This.

He could always just choose to stop acting like a child and not impose on his family on vacation. Why even cater to this- Just show up at the restaurant, he can certainly look over the menu, and if there's something he wants he will order it and if there isn't anything he wants he will just have to order something and try it or he will go hungry. I thought this post was about an immature child, not a grown man. :confused3

And this.

To all who take the stand that planning around a picky adult eater is stressful...you are 100%. Probably been the biggest bone of contention in 40 years of marriage and a big concern, health-wise, too. But since that's the only bone, I count myself lucky in many, many ways.

He'd never insist that the rest of us pass up something like this because of him, but it is our first night of a vacation celebrating those 40 years together and I am hoping we'll be seated together.

I do like the suggestion of him looking at the menu and making his decision to stay with the group or opt for a Mara burger. There would certainly be no hurt feelings or anger.

I've found some great reviews on the Disney Food Blog, with pictures, and I think we will have a close look at them together. I thought the meat and mashed potatoes looked promising. I am sure our younger DGS will not do any kind of justice to the place, even the kids' menu, as he can claim a right to childlike tastes and has a very light appetite for even his favourite things. Maybe the Mara would work for both OR I could find another night for 4 at Boma and we'll opt for something more universally appealing on that first night.

Decisions, decisions....so many choices! But whatever we do, we are determined to have a wonderful time. :cloud9:

Classy response :) I honestly think your husband will like Boma. I may be wrong but there is a whole section of baked chicken, potatoes, etc.

Well I think the children's area includes chicken nuggets, fries, and mac and cheese that are plain. I don't know what seasonings are on the carving station meats but those are a possibility.

They also have pasta and meatballs, which our Dd8 will tell you is the best in disney!! (Including the Italian restaurants!!!)

It's our fave restaurant, prob on the planet!!

Hi there Octoberbaby...funny thing, some of my favourite people in the world are October babies! I am lucky enough to be travelling with two of them..DD and DSIL.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I love to plan our trips, and every one of them is very special to me, particularly ones that I get to share with grandchildren. I know the day will come that they won't find it so cool to vacation with the old folks. Meanwhile, I don't want to waste any of our precious time together.

It means the world to me that DH has been a great father and a wonderful grandfather, and while our interests and tastes may be very divergent, we love our family. And WDW!

It's also extremely unhealthy to eat like this. I can't imagine the amount of vitamins he's lacking.

Thank you, I was trying to think of a polite reply to the OP. I would do as I would say to a child, this is where we are going, this is what we are eating. In his case as an adult I'd just say you can either come and eat what is available or you can stay home. We're not going to not experience this because of your pickiness.

Quite often people remain picky because they are coddled and given into. He is a grown man for goodness sake.

In saying all the above I would think you can find something at the buffet. It's quite vast.

:) I hope y'all have a great vacation and I'm sure that wherever you eat, it will be a wonderful experience!

I would leave him to his own resources at a generic counter service. Seriously. My DH is VERY similar and he ate almost NOTHING at Boma. 2 small servings of beef plus 5 pita bread pieces. That was IT. No, I'm not kidding. It was a total waste of money for him to go.

I was one of the pickiest eaters EVER. As a child, I only ate Chef Boyardee Raviolis ( those icky meat ones!) cold hotdogs and Count Chocula.

The hotdogs got cut after I choked on one. I wouldn't eat steak, ribs, pork, long spaghetti noodles, ( HAD to be Rigatoni) hamburger meat, Mexican, Chinese, .... you get the idea. I was super picky.

After I met my then husband, he MADE me try all of these nasty foods. Chicken and Dumplings-WHAT?! I generally didn't like anything together.

Guess what? He pushed me out of my comfort zone, and didn't buy into the "I didn't like it". Sour cream?? Oh, the fight. BUT, I eat many different things, fruits and veggies I would have never tried. Way healthier.

My nephew is a picky eater, basically just chicken steak, potatoes, white rice and buttered noodles!!! But he loves Boma. !!!

sunnyday123 - good for you for finally giving in and learning to eat like an adult. It certainly opens up a world of possibilities when travelling, socializing, and making healthy choices. Obviously I did not use the right tactics, as I tried to bring him around. It didn't help that his own father was only marginally better. I have read recently that this can be genetic, but I prefer many of the non-scientific terms I have applied over the years. :rotfl2:

At this stage in life, I just take comfort in the fact that the same, uhhh, "determination" has kept him from ever smoking a cigarette, or developing any desire for alcohol. While I often think it would be really nice to enjoy a glass of wine together, I ALWAYS have a designated driver when I find myself in the position of drinking for two! And he's good-natured enough to help friends get home safely, as well.

JennyDrake, I know it is going to be an extravagance for him to eat at Boma, but if he is willing to hunt down enough to make a meal and be pleasant company, I am going to pay for that dinner with a smile on mine. Luckily, I have a bit more time before the cancellation window closes, and we will talk about it. If he shows reluctance, he can get take-out some evening and relax in front of the resort tv while those of us who love new dining experiences dive into the boboti and zebra domes.

I appreciate the comments, too, about the menus being dumbed down. Sadly, it isn't just WDW, but a North American trend. You have to look hard and have good advice when searching for ethnic and local specialties. I still shudder to think what Pillsbury did to the croissant! My dream is to travel to other parts of the world, savouring regional cuisine and culture. Guess who will be staying home on THAT trip.. ;)

If he doesn't find enough things to eat, you can put him in charge of refilling plates for everyone else;)

Have a great trip and Happy Anniversary!!!:thumbsup2

I brought my brother to Boma for breakfast who is also a picky eater, and although I tried to convince him to try some of the "interesting" options, he wasn't having it but enjoyed the basic items that were available to him. I also brought my grandmother to Boma for dinner, and somehow she ended up talking to the Chef (she was always the chatty type who saw everyone as an old friend) who then brought out special items for her that were not "out" for everyone.

They are *constantly* cooking back there and it not outside the realm of possibly for them to prepare a small portion of certain foods special for one guest. Disney takes great pride in how far they go to help guests with certain allergies, I'm sure they can also accommodate special requests. I used to work in Disney restaurants and I would be shocked if they wouldn't make a special dish just for your DH, buffet or not.

I have some pickies in my group and we all loved Boma. There is some chicken there that is pretty much rotisserie chicken. It was awesome and the meat carving station was good. My pickiest child loved Boma the most if that helps at all. And he is a meat and bread eater only. :(

Boma - here we come! You guys are great and very reassuring that a plain meat & potatoes guy will be able to enjoy a meal while those of us who like to have our tastebuds tickled a bit will be laughing all the way to the Zebra domes.

Even my teetotalling DD is looking forward to tasting these - LOL. :yay:

Those Kenyan Coffee tarts look amazing.

10 days to take-off and 11 days until Boma. Getting so excited now I have to remind myself to breathe.

I love this thread! I totally agree with some of the more stringent comments about picky adults with behavior I wouldn't accept from my kids - and I am traveling with an almost-this-picky sister in law soon. I love OPs classy responses and the assurances my sis in law will find plenty when we go to Boma - a new place I'm so looking forward to! At least my SIL (and many picky eaters) tries to quietly eat whatever she can find and never tries to dictate what others can do - but as the planner/hostess I want everyone to enjoy themselves, not just tolerate it!

Yes...I totally understand where OP is coming from as far as having a picky husband AND wanting everyone to enjoy themselves. After all it is a family vacation, and your vacation experiences shouldn't make anyone feel out of their comfort zone. I myself LOVE trying new things just like OP and feel her anxiety since my husband is *almost* the pickiest person on the planet. I remember last October at F&W I got him and my kids to try Escargot. They had no clue what it was until AFTER they swallowed it! Funniest thing ever! They loved it!
