Boma Review - Not for me - LONG

DisneyPhD said:
Hmmm, I had to change my ADRs from a table for 4 at 1900 park fare at 6:30, to a table for 8 at Boma at 4:30 to accomdate our friends who decided to come after we made our dinner resevations. I am not sure about both the super early dinner time and the resturant (I have always wanted to try it, we will have a car, as will our friends so getting there won't be a huge issue. It is our 1st day and I am am just not sure how the day will go.)

I am considering calling and seeing if there is anything else open for 8 that day elsewhere. Funny you said they start at 5:00. I don't want to work my butt off, leaving the park early to get there at 4:30 and not have us set us until 5:00, that would really bother me. (especailly at such an early hour, I understand a bit of a wait at more crowded times.)

I am also really concerned that even though I mentioned it on our ADR's there won't be a lot DD and I can eat because of her Dairy and Egg allergies. Most of the stuff that sounds good, also sounds off limits. :guilty:

When we were there last Wednesday, the restaurant wasn't opened before 5:00 (we could see it was empty from an overlook). At 5:00 they started seating people. Your reply made me curious and I began wondering if I was confused so I called Disney Dining and just got conflicting info. I asked the CM what time Boma opened for dinner and she said 5:00 but when I said somone I know has reservations at 4:30 she checked and said, yes, they do take reservations at 4:30?.? :confused3 :scratchin

Ok, well you made up my mind for me. I am calling tmw and seeing if there is anything else avilable. (time or place, or at least checking on the whole thing.) I really don't want to bust my butt to get there at that time and not have the place open until 5:00. As it is we don't want to eat that early, it was the only time. Also I had to change my 6:30 ADR's at Coral Reef to 4:45 to get the whole group in. I don't mind a 15 min as much as 30 if the place doesn't open until 5:00 too. Still I am going to call and ask about it, see if I can possibliy change them.

I may get flamed :furious: for saying this but I'm going to anyway.

My DH and I hate Boma as well. Not for the "buffet behavoir" the OP described but because the food was well ... just bad.

I would say it was the WORST TS meal we have ever had at WDW. The flavors were strange and the qaulity of the food itself was low.

So we sat there trying to figure out what all the fuss was about. Why do people rave about Boma's?

Then it came to us. (Here it comes!!!!!)

The average american households eating habits are very bland. A LOT of people out there do NOT know how to cook and thier cooking is devoid of flavors. Therefore - when they experience a style of cooking that actually adds flavor to the food it has a "wow" factor.

Our family cooks with tons of flavors, domestic and exotic alike. My DH stepfather is from P. Rico and MAN can he cook and thank goodness my DH learned how to cook from him. My parents were down home southern cookers so we balance each other well. We use spice and seasonings all the time.

We find when we eat at other people's houses it's just ... well ... bad. Sorry!
(And I'm not talking about 1 or 2 instances - I'm talking ALL the time.) It's just bland.

It's like Pass the gravy dude! I remember being a kid and going to my friends houses and them asking if I wanted gravy for my roast beef. I said "no" and regretted it as I had to choke down the meat it was so dry and flavorless.

So flame away. But this is my answer to the Boma mystery of why so many people like it ... it's better than what they experince in a typical day.

Flame away! ROTFL!

I think OP's review of Boma was just that, their review...not for me and why... Good Job, Lucas, and thanks for letting us know how unsanitary you felt that buffet was. Believe me, I will think twice before going there if no one is watching the buffet line.

Every restaurant is not for everyone for whatever reason.....I have written reviews lately of restaurants I have liked and disliked, they are my reviews and opinions of my experiences at said restaurant..

But what really turned me off was seeing people licking their fingers while eating or while going thru the buffet line and then touching the serving spoons and plates!! I guess this happens at any buffet but maybe due to the ribs/chicken factor it was really noticeable to me. While going thru the dessert section, a boy not only was licking his finger tips but his entire fingers - and then he reached for the serving spoon handle. And then he used the same fingers to scrape the chocolate mousse right off of the serving spoon and put it back for the next person! YUCK! Thank goodness I saw him so I passed on the mousse! It just turned me off!!
This kind of nasty behavior is EXACTLY why we don't do buffets. I think they are gross.

Yep, I have seen plenty of bad behavior--even at Boma. That's one reason we try to make the first seating at any buffet we dare to try.

Several years ago I saw a well-dressed woman going through the line at Boma using her finger to scrape off the spoon onto her plate then she would lick her finger and then repeat the action when she came to the next food item she wanted to put on her plate! How gross is that? :faint:

I have eaten at many wdw buffets and never gotten ill yet. Maybe they should put signs up in the buffet restaurants reminding people to be hygienic when getting there food ;) I liked Boma a lot and I do eat a lot of spicy foods. I didnt think zebra domes lived up to the hype either.

Hey, no flames from me. You are exactly right!!! I am a spice and seasoning freak and get lots of compliments on my food. I did all whole thread about bland food on the Community Board.

I'm not going to flame you. You do have a point. I'm just not going to agree with you. I do not consider myself a "bland" eater. While I don't eat Puerto Rican styled/seasoned food, I eat many different things and experiement around with cooking often. I'm always trying new and different things. Many of my co-workers look at my leftovers and go "Oooh, that's weird."

But I really enjoyed Boma. Was it the best restaurant I have ever been to? No. But I enjoyed many of the salads and sides they had there. The meat--unimpressive. The Zebra Domes--unimpressive. Everything else, I felt, was very refreshing and had interesting seasonings. Now, maybe it is just the type of seasoning they use that you don't like. For instance, I hate ANY kind of curry dish that I've ever eaten in the U.S. (Loved the curry meals I had in Japan). Whatever kind of curry that is used here, I just don't care for. However, I know many people who love it. Doesn't mean I say that the food is substandard--it's just not to my taste.

But, don't get me started on the Liberty Tree Tavern. Now there is a place where I think it tells the story of whether you eat well at home or not. Talk about bland, processed food. But some people love it. All I can assume is that they just don't eat well normally in order to love that. But, maybe it's just "different tastes." :teeth:

This is why there is more than one restaurant at WDW. We all like different things. Everyone raves about the cheese soup at Le Cellier when I tried I thought "That was it?? :confused3 " To each his own.

I know what you mean!! A long time ago I used to make a beer and cheese soup about once a month. When I went to Le Cellier I still thought mine was better!!! But, I think many people have never even had cheese soup so I'm sure they love the stuff at Le Cellier.

Don't get me started on LeCellier.........I personally think the place has gone through some changes, my food was too spicey with no indication that it would be. I cannot eat spicey food for medical reasons so I am very careful how I order. When questioning the castmember about the chicken, he said the chef sometimes likes to add hot peppers to his spices......Hey, you better tell the folks and indicate it on your description as some may be allergic to what you are adding.

I tried Boma once.. that was it.. once, it was not for me.

I know what you are saying. I am originally from New Orleans and I love to eat and cook with lots of seasonings. I love spicy foods - no - I love VERY SPICY foods! :woohoo: And I really enjoy hot/spicy/sweet Thai dishes - especially the chicken coconut curry when it is very hot with a little sweet background from the coconut. YUM!! I just made my own mouth water just thinking about it - I could eat it every day!! I can't say the same for the food at Boma as I don't think anything was outstanding.

I don't understand flaming others for their dining preferences. :confused3 Boma is my favorite restaurant at WDW so far, it's just what I prefer. I don't think it's a mystery that everyone has different tastes... I can't understand the rave over many of the places people here love, it's just what we like. I like African foods and Boma is pretty good at capturing that spice so it's for me. I also prefer Indian and Afghan foods. I'm not a 'meat and potatoes' kinda person so steakhouses and such would bore the crap out of me but that doesn't mean I don't understand why others would enjoy the Concourse or LeCelier.... they like it because that's their cup o'tea!

Well I decided with the extra effort of getting over to AKL on the day we get there (we will be doing a park,) we cancelded my 4:30 Boma and got a table for 8 at 5:30 at Crystal Palace. We already had ADR's there a few days later so I had to move those around too.

The CM thought it was strange the resturant says it opens at 5:00, and takes ADR's starting at 4:30. :confused3

Maybe another trip. :)
