The cast for this trip is as follows:
Bobcat(me) 30 something single Mom. Desperately in need of a vacation this year!
DD Katie 11yo going on 30. Served as navigator and aspires to have her own whistle.
DS Brice 9yo must see Donald Duck (as usual) royal pain in the butt recently and loves to do anything to torment his sister. Also has that male selective hearing thing going on right now.
Vacation July 17th - 28th
Most vacations we drive and this year is no exception. We decided to shake things up a bit this trip and travel I 75. According to AAA this way is only about 40 miles more than our normal I 77 - I 95 route, besides my niece recently moved to Tampa and we wanted to stop and see her before we reached WDW knowing it would be hard to pull ourselves away once we arrived.
Well the first of our plans went astray when my niece was unable to see us on our way down. Her new school term had just started and she works in retail so with Florida school getting ready to head back she was scheduled to work the entire weekend. We left a day later than planned and were on the road by 6:10 am. Right on schedule! Usually we never leave much before 7am. It started to rain as we pulled out of the drive but we were on our way to the sunshine state so no worries! After a quick stop for Tim Hortons Tim Bits we were officially off.
DD was official navigator this trip and rode up front with me. Since she is now almost as tall as me, and I'm sure will pass me soon, I don't worry about the air bags anymore. This left more room inthe back of the van for DS and his crap, um I mean his must haves. We took out a seat for the coolers which worked well and gave us room with the luggage for our other passenger. My niece is in school for fashion merchandising and my sister sent a dressmakers manequin down with us for her use. Suzy was a good traveling companion and she stayed with us until we were able to meet up with my niece.
The trip was very uneventful except for the fact that AAA screwed up our trip tics. I had asked for 2, one for our usual route and one for this new route. Both were for our old route which we know by heart but we didn't discover that until we were about 50 miles from home. Luckily I had picked up a copy of Along I 75 and it was a great resource. I liked the maps and recommend this to anyone traveling this route.
I had tried for a hotel in Valdosta through priceline before our trip but was unsuccessful. I worried we would have a problem getting a room on a Saturday night if we waited too long so when we stopped at the GA welcome center they made a couple of calls for us and we scored a room. I had never done that before but it was a weight off my mind knowing we had someplace to stay. We were scheduled to hit Atlanta around 4pm but since we ended up driving on a Saturday this worked our well. We stoped for the night at a Rodeway in Tifton, GA about 9:30 and were ready to get some sleep. The hotel was clean but I wouldn't want to stay there long.
Tomorrow we finally feel the Disney magic!
