Boardwalk Bed Bugs?

"no-see-ems" are those little flying insects that come out around sunset. My wife tangled with them in Crystal River when we went out to see the manatees. They are called no-see-ems, well, because they are so small you can't see em. You can when they are in a dense cluster. For such a small insect they sure pack a wallop of a bite. My wife's legs where covered with bites. The bites swell up and itch like crazy.

A very good friend of mine just went through a bed bug nightmare. She and her husband moved into a new apartment (Chicago suburbs) last Fall. Their mattress was brand new, the furniture store delivered it with the plastic still on it. Well, shortly after moving they both started getting these bite marks all over but had no idea where they was coming from. They went to several doctors and dermatologists, but couldn't figure out what it was. Finally, like 3 months later, they realized it was bed bugs. They had to immediately vacate the apartment while a special service came in to deal with them. The bed bugs lived in the mattress, carpet, and even the walls! My friend said when they finally got to go back and get their things (obviously moving out of that place) she could see the dead bugs all over the place. Coming right out of the walls!!! She was really shook up over the whole things and couldn't even talk about it. :( She said the other apartments had to be cleaned also because they bugs can travel through the walls.

Sounds like the BWV's could have a real problem on their hands if this isn't dealt with quickly and properly!

YIKES! After a similar thread last Spring, I did some internet research. We should ALL be checking the mattresses when we arrive, for the little rusty-colored skidmarks these guys leave behind. There is no evidence of the actual critters in the daytime... they come out in the dark and look for BLOOD!

It seems there is an epidemic of these guys again. They are hard to kill as pesticides, with good reason, can not legally be as strong as they once were. Florida was cited as a leading state for infestation, because of the warm climate and huge number of travelers from places all over the world. These little guys won't likely kill you, just make you itchy and grossed-out. Everyone, take a peek at the bedding and mattress one you check into a room... This is not related to any lack of cleanliness and vigilant guests can help keep these critters from taking over!

Just a thought.....do you think those plug in critter repellers would do any good? It would be easy enough to take a few along, probably not a bad idea for any hotel room. Does anyone think they'd have any effect on these horrible bugs? Maybe at least keep them out of your room during your stay?

Why did I have to read this? We're doing Boardwalk in two weeks. I know Disney is clean, but I'm going to have nightmares of bugs eating me in my sleep, lol!

Just wonderful, BWV is the next place we are staying at. Do you mind posting what room you were in or sending me a PM?

Thanks for the heads up.

If you hear back from BWV I would love to know what actions they took.

Here is a picture of a bed bug below.............

Would these little "buggers" be repelled by ordinary insect repellant? Hopefully, one could just rub on a bit of bug repellant before bed for safety's sake!

We are planning a trip to BWV on Sunday, so being concerned, I called the BWV Manager to ask him about this situation. He was very nice and told me that Disney is very careful about any pest infestation in the rooms. He said that Florida is, itself, a very "buggy" place, but that they do everything they can to keep the rooms free of pests. He said that there is not a "bed bug" problem at BWV or any other Disney hotel, and that any complaints by guests are immediately investigated. He was very reassuring, and I was, in fact, reassured by what he said. My conclusion was that problems like this can occur even at Disney, but that Disney will not ignore a problem like this. I E-mailed the link to this thread and the thread on the DVC board to his office and received a reply that they were reviewing the information.

Thanks nntucket for your efforts. We have a trip planned there in early June and after reading about these bed bugs I was a tad concerned. They seem like hard pests to get rid of. I've also read bed bugs are making a big comeback.

I read the bedbug article too--right before we stayed at POP for a few nights!LOL. I'd do the "bedbug" check every night. I'd whip the bedding back,,and look with a flashlight,,LOL. All was clear. I saw a thing on them on Dateline or 20/20 a few yrs back and it was soooo gross,,they leave a musty type of odor you can smell in the room,,and in this one hotel room they showed,,the things were living under the wallpaper on the walls of the room!!I'd also be careful about transporting them via luggage-thats how they often travel,,by tourists from other countries/areas bringing them to other hotels. Just bring your flashlight,,and do a casual bedcheck every night.. We're staying at POR over Memorial day,and i'm getting squeamish already!LOL. hopefully its NOT a problem,,although i doubt that Disney would release a press releases stating they have a bedbug problem,,kwim?

<font face="times" size="+0"> eeek!

they just can't get rid of those bugs in Florida, huh...

first fire ants (our BWV room was infested with fire ants back in Nov 03... those bites/stings are nasty!)... and now bed begs...

*sigh*

i guess bugs are just a fact of life in Florida. :(</font>

Yikes. I'm not telling anyone in my family about this.

Would spraying the bed with Lysol do any good against bedbugs? also, should I grease up the bed legs with Vaseline?

Lysol does not kill bugs. In fact the pesticides being used today are not killing bedbugs.

I posted about the GH article on the Bedspread thread about a month ago (the one talking about how infrequently they are cleaned). I was more concered about bedbugs than bedspreads at that time. We were about to go to CBR when I read it. Of course I was paranoid the first night and imagined I was being bitten :p . No blood on the sheets though.

The fact is these bugs are reproducing at a fast pace. They have come over with travelers from other countries and our pesticides (the more friendly ones used today) are not effective against them. They can tackle them though with something stronger once the bug is reported.

I have a relative in the hotel industry and beleive me, these critters are showing up in all brands of hotels-even 4 and 5 star. It has nothing to do with cleanliness. Guests are bringing them in. Unless management is told of the problem, chances are they will continue to spread.
