Boardwalk Bed Bugs?

As for checking the bed with a flashlight before you hop in, do you need to turn off the lights for awhile before this? I thought they come out in the dark only?

Do you pull back the bedspread and can see them?

Shan, what I remember from the website was to check under the sheets and look at the mattress. They always leave the little rusty-colored speckles, so that's a sign. You could certainly check the bed before retiring, for any activity. Also check the room when you first enter, before a night on the bed!

Yikes... I am starting to think that between God-know-what fluids on the bedspreads plus bedbugs in the mattresses, maybe the next DVC should be at Ft. Wilderness, and we can all pack our OWN bedding and stay in tents!

First of all, I'm about to buy the Dream Sack....lol! Secondly, I am really hoping that someone, somewhere finds a quick solution to this problem so that we can all travel with ease!

Yuck! I read the article in Good Housekeeping, too, and was creeped out! As of yesterday, I was excitedly anticipating our annual mid July trip to the WL, but after reading all this about bed bugs today, it got me depressed! What if this gets WORSE by July? or sooner? I told my husband about this thread and his first words were "We're RVing it instead!" But again, an RV could have them too!

Hopefully, a way to solve the problem is found soon! I'm sorry for the poster who had this experience, but I hope this doesn't become a challenge all over Disney!

You know, I saw the dreamsack too, and thought about it about reading the thread about the bedspreads. I am really freaked out about the bedbugs though. I'll definitely be more careful next trip. Thanks for the warning!!

What you described sounds a lot like my experience at WL last December. At the time, I chalked it up as an allergic reaction because thye didn't look like any insect bites I'd experienced before.

DH and I do distinctively remember rust-colored spots on the sheet. Fortunately, I was the only one to be bitten but I am the type who gets eaten alive by mosquitos even as others stay bite-free. You don't need insect repellent as long as I am around.

We will be staying at BWI next month. You can bet that I will be armed with flash lights and will inspect every inch of the room.

Just thinking about it makes me itchy!

Personally - I'd rather WDW have them then me!! They've got the $$ to deal with getting rid of the darn things! I just read that article today in the dentist office. The family in the article had to replace their carpet and their mattress!

I will definitely be checking my luggage out before I bring it in the house!!

Ugh....I feel like I need some positive follow-up on this. I wish WDW would release something to the effect that they are scouring all rooms and are on a constant alert for stuff like this. I know tghey won't, at the risk of alarming all guests, but it would be nice.

Are these bugs more seasonal, or does it not really matter for a climate like Florida?

I don't think they're seasonal since it said in the article that bedbugs can live up to one year without food. Personally, I'm freaking out. I told my fiance about this last night and he laughed for a good five minutes. I'm admittedly a worrier, and he understands that, but when he heard my plan that included Vaseline, flashlights, and possible legwarmers, it was too much for the easygoing guy he is.

Seriously, though, between the possiblity of bedbugs and the potentially dirty blankets on another thread, my craziness has amped up a few levels. I plan on getting a clean, fresh blanket upon arrival, but I think a request for a large-scale, military sweep for bedbugs might be a little much, even for concierge...

Last night when we went to bed we both smelled something odd. Couldn't place our finger on it even after looking around the house. I then pulled back the bed covers to check for bedbugs since I read they have a smell to them.
Hubby thought I was insane and he was right on this one! LOL

Oh great....so now we are going to the Contemporary that just had flooding problems - and then on to the Boardwalk where there is bugs! Hope we don't run in to either problem at either resort!

Well, for our next trip I'm buying everyone a dream sack, and those air filters that you hang around your neck on the plane to filter out airborne germs. Also plan to take along plenty of Lysol spray and wipes. What's the vaseline for? Or maybe we should all just get hazmat suits and oxygen tanks!
