Boards going down tonight @ 11pm Eastern

We need to evaluate the effect the "long threads" are having on board performance. In order to do that we will be "hiding" the long threads for 24 hours. They will come back so no need to panic
I will be shutting the boards down around 11pm to move the threads around and make some other changes.
If you are a participant in one of these threads please feel free to start another thread tomorrow.
A long thread will be over 10,000 posts for the purpose of this experiment

Wow, the board seems a lot faster to me today.

Much better, but we still need to see what the "afternoon rush" does to the speed. We've been running with over 3000 posters on at one time recently and that has certainly pushed the limits too.

Alex is continuing the make some more changes this morning, but it looks like the large threads were certainly at least part of the issue. Hopefully we can even get search back sometime!

Same here. Last night it felt like I was on dial-up, if the page even loaded.

I'd be somewhat surprised if the problem turned out to be the large threads.

After all, before the upgrade, we weren't as slow as we've been and we still had the large threads. It doesn't make sense, but I am not an IT guy to be sure.

Wow! Yesterday and recently, it's been taking forever for the boards to load, but this morning I noticed the boards were faster than I can remember in a long time. Whatever is working....yeah!

Thanks , now the DW can release the straps (a little) on the belts holding my arms down to the computer chair I think we'll wait till later to take the straps off completely.

BIG difference. Looks like it is the super long threads. I know Pete wants the long threads, but frankly if this is the difference with a 10K post limit... I say Kill them threads. Or at least let the newer posts push the oldest out over 10K. I say let's experiment with 5k posts....

I know I can certainly tell the difference in the speed of the boards tonight. Hate to see the long threads suffer because of it though. Hopefully they can work something out.

Here is an update from Webmaster Alex:

The experiment with removing the long threads surprised even us! As you can see the boards are flying and there were no other changes made. Because of that we need to find a way to deal with this issue. We want to see what happens on Monday, which traditionally is our busiest day of the week.
I want to assure everyone that we will be bringing back the posts in those threads, we just need to work out the best way to do that and keep the performance of the boards where it is now.
In the mean time please feel free to start a new thread.
