Blue Sky Rumor: Ride coming to UK Pavilion?

I wrote something like this once before somewhere else. When Disney does a new ride I expect one of two things to be creative. Either the ride system, or the execution of the ride entertainment (story). In my opinion that is what they pay the Imagineers for, to make one of those two things different and special. The ride system for Splash Mountain isn't particularly creative. It's a flume ride as you said. For Splash, it is the execution of the ride entertainment. The story is beautifully told with the scenes and animatronics. The colors are wonderful. The music is spot on. The ride compliments the story, with the big hill coming at the climax of the story and the drop perfectly matching the danger of that point in the story. Truly, it is beautifully executed.

When you contrast it to Little Mermaid, where both the ride system, the ubiquitous omnimover, and the retelling of the story has no elegance or twist, you can see the difference between what I expect from Disney, and what they have sometimes provided. Another good example is Peter Pan. There it is the ride system. Yes it's an Omnimover, but the suspension from the ceiling immerses you in the flying experience, so strongly a part of the wistfulness of the underlying story, that it is a fabulous adjustment. I like 7DMT. I appreciate that they didn't simply re-tell the story, instead they borrowed 3 components of the story and executed them well. Do I wish it was longer? Less of a kiddie coaster? Yes I do. But I appreciate the concept of the swinging barrels, even if I wish they made the effect more elaborate, the beautifully rendered cavern, and the well executed House in the Forest. It doesn't simply retell the story or load you onto a moving car with music, it instead augments a ride with moments of scenic brilliance.

As for another one that is done all wrong in my opinion? Look no further than the money grabbing FEA, which was shoe horned over a much better ride. If you are going to overlay an IP into a genuinely good existing ride, don't puke it all out into a storyboard like FEA does. Overlay it with subtlety and creativity, like they did with Pirates.

In the end, I think Splash is the best from the Imagineers of any ride that wasn't part of a Park opening. I think there are some original Park rides, like Spaceship Earth, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, and AK Safari that are of the same class or better. But of the rides that have been added to the Parks since they opened, I think it is hard to top Splash Mountain for a ride that would have been approved by Walt himself.

Well said, especially the comparison of Little Mermaid to splash

I see others I have suggested ToT also be in that class, which I agree with, and I'd put Everest there as well (and others if we go beyond WDW to the other parks)

I also think Toy Story Midway Mania could fit - at least as something Walt would like as that more than almost every other ride I see entire families having fun with which I think Walt would like

Um...midway mania is good fun...but not a very good imagineering effort.

And Everest...is an enclosed rollercoaster...that's what it is. I think people compare it to the tame nature of big thunder mountain and make it seem like it's more of an effort than it actually is.

I actually agree with this point. I think having "culturally relevant" IPs that predate Disney and are part of a country's folklore involved in the pavilions is a great way to 'save' the WS. Otherwise they'll all end up like Norway, which is now much more of a Frozen pavilion than a Norway one.

Also, I have to say, I'm 27 (thus an adult) and I find the WS to be pretty boring, as far as Disney lands go. Parts of it are interesting, but other parts can be pretty barren.

Honest question: If you don't plan on eating there, what's there to do in the UK, Japan, Italy and Germany? Walk around a gift shop? I need more than that, especially if I'm paying to get in. I think most people do.

This is another way that the world has gotten smaller. The ability to buy stuff from other countries was pretty novel when EPCOT first open. Now you can buy anything that's for sale anywhere in the world on the internet.

There is a debate that Disney movies borrow from european stories...

The question is: does an Alice in wonderland omnimover belong in Epcot next to the food and wine stand that serves salmon?

Pretty simple. The place for those types of rides have always been In the sterilized magic kingdom.

I know I'm coming in a few weeks late, but really you have to make a decision. Do you want EPCOT to relieve some crowds from MK or be an adult park? Because you aren't going to get both... You either need to be open to some more kid friendly activities at EPCOT or the crowds are going to stay low.

I honestly don't need every Park to remind me of fantasyland...no

But with that then it's never going to draw the crowds...

Maybe they will just close it during the day, open at 3:30 for the start of the dinner crowd, and stay open until 1 am for the night crowd. Who needs the front half?

Or extend future world out into the parking lot, separating WS from Epcot, Add some high end retail to the pavilions, and it's mall no. 2---With direct overhead transport from the new deluxe motel group.....

What I think is going to happen, and I will be happy for the addition, is a more defined character presence in each pavilion as well as some sort of experience, whether it be a ride or a movie. Other than to eat, we usually pass by, or quickly through, any pavilion that does not have something to watch or ride. We may browse or wander around a bit, but that's it. I am a former CM from way back and a die hard Walt Disney fan, and I appreciate every tiny detail the Disney imagineers have included into every park, but after you have looked through the museums (art teacher as well) and strolled along the paths looking at the merchandise...you move on. (i.e. Japan, Italy, Morroco, Germany, UK) Canada has the opposite problem for me. Love the movie, would love a ride, but there are too many empty facades/possible shops. Each attraction does not need to be movie themed...(think Madame Tussauds ride through London's history) but it would still be great if it were. Future World will become Discovery World and include all sorts of new and fascinating discoveries! Pixar enhanced The Living Seas pavilion just as Donald Duck and friends did for Mexico and Elsa and the gang are doing for Norway. Accept change everyone! Change is good! Hang in there folks!

It's gotta be more than characters...they've been futzing with "character presence" since the 90's there...that's not a fix all. Believe it or not...many if not most people don't pay $125 for lines to characters...it's important, But just a piece of the puzzle.

it just needs more FUN ways to LEARN about each country, if that involves using the characters I am 100% on board

Yeah but characters are used in fables to sell merchandise...how are we using that to "educate"?

That's a bridge too far...
They educate you by influencing you to buy more merchandise. Seems like you would have learned this lesson LOL. Sheesh

I guess the point I was trying to make was not quite so clear. They need more "stuff" in Epcot. Each pavilion will get some sort of ride, movie, or audio-animatronic show, that not only fits in with the particular pavilion, it will enhance the entertainment value of it. Something to make people want to spend more time in each country. Spend more time = spend more money for the company (good business) and more enjoyment for the guest (good business). Kids are a BIG factor here. What can we do to make kids want to see each country...RIDES! Probably based on iconic characters! Throw a Ratatouille ride in France and it suddenly is a MUST DO for everyone! Do that for every country and crowds come to Epcot! Disney is about to drop a ton of money in Epcot and it won't just be to bring "GOTG" to Future World. Ellen will go, Wonders of Life space will finally be used, and same for innoventions! Much is coming!

I doubt Disney wants to invest the upfront bucks...but more importantly the longterm operational and EMPLOYEE cost...to do this. They want more money without investment.

And if they did...I think WDW would become a mishmoshed, redundant mess...

"Honey, which park are we going to go to to ride the princess rides today?"

I don't understand how you can keep making this arguement. With NFL, Pandora, Star Wars, and Toy Story they invested over $2 billion dollars in WDW over 7 years. Is that imaginary money? Are we at a point in history where that amount of investment is insignificant?

Reetz has already said they are going to make a big investment in Epcot. Disney could announce a billion dollar expansion at D23 and you would still make this same arguement. It's almost like you have painted yourself in this Disney is evil corner and can't get yourself out.

Indeed...that is a big investment...but I got a couple of questions:

1. How much money was spent In the 10 years BEFORE that investment?
2. Did anything different happen in their market?
3. What's happening after Star Wars land rolls out? (More to follow)

That is all...with all due respect to my friend and the network of "outside insiders" that propogate the hypothetical...100% speculation.

I got a saying for that...

I haven't painted myself into any corner. Their overall investment in park additions went down significantly since AK opened (fact)...and their pricing policies have been "more for same/less" and are unbalanced (my take)

Might I remind you that the current WDW parks are net zero or even less In terms of actual attractions in the ticket price today as compared to 1999?...only animal kingdom will be above in may...that's not good for theme parks in close to 20 years...not at all.

IF...and that's a big one...they announce more significant investments to follow mgm I will soften my stance...just like I'll soften my wdi criticism if what they are building now is good.

So far...new fantasyland, springs, and the Epcot stuff have been "minor" improvements. You can't look at these things in a vacuum. All factors have to be considered and should be by the consumer.
