Does anyone know what this is and what causes it? A black spot has appeared on my daughters camera, as you can see it is on the screen AND on the picture. Her younger sister borrowed it for the weekend and said the mark just appeared :confused3

A large spot like that is a speck of dust inside the camera. It's that big because the sensor that plays the role of film is very small, as small as 1/4 inch across for a point and shoot camera, or about the size of one frame of home movie film if you know or remember what that is.

Can you post an actual image? Point and shoots are not that prone to dust like DSLR's are, and it doesn't look quite like dust on the sensor.... it's really hard to tell from this shot though.

Just asking, but have you made sure that there is nothing on the lens? I figure that you already did, but just making sure.

Point and shoots don't usually get dust spots but because of the soft edges it sure looks like one. I would try gently tapping the camera on something to see if the spot moves it's location. If it moves it is definitely a foreign object.

I got a dust spot on my P&S once (Fuji F30). But I fixed it in a way I can't recommend (a vacuum). Without voiding the warranty (mine was already out of warranty), sending it in the manufacturer might be the only option.
