Just wondering what the black dot on the envelope means.

I think the black dot shows threads that you have posted. I could be wrong. From what I see the black dot are only on posts that I had stared or replied.

Yup, CdnDisneyNut is right on. The black dot means that you have posted at least once to that thread (topic).

There's lots of little hidden features in the boards and I'm sure you'll discover more as time goes on.

Yep. Posts that you've replied or are subscribed to. I think it helps you keep track of them ... so when you scroll down the page you can see which are the ones you're interested in.
