Unfortunately, this advice isn't as good as it used to be. Sales are becoming few & far between. And depending on your city & airline preference, may never happen.
We fly out of Buffalo & we prefer Jetblue. I bought our airfare the day it was released. Paid $289 each round trip for our prefered flights : nonstop both ways, fly there early & home mid day. We have flown this route several times before & usually pay from $180 - 220. I fare watched after buying & did see it go down about $15, but didn't bother getting a credit. Mostly, it went up.
Anyway, I'm glad I bought when I did. Advice on this board was to wait for a sale or better fare. Posters here said 90 days out is the best bet for good fares. Well, I'm @ 97 days out. Jetblue has changed our flights to smaller planes. Our flight down has only a few seats left now & the price for that 1 way is $400!!!! Flight back is no longer listed on the website...it is sold out!!
So there will be no "sale" on our preferred flights. If we had waited to buy, we wouldn't even be able to get on our preferred return flight.
So OP, if you got flights you want as far as times & a price you can live with, I say, good for you! These days, I think that's the best you can expect. Don't second guess yourself or dwell on the fares you used to pay. Relax & enjoy the rest of your planning!
