This is a subject I feel so strongly on. I would be DEAD if it wasn't for birth control so no I definately don't think its a sin.

Abortion should NOT be a form of Birth Control
(should be available in certain cases though)

I agree with the above 200 percent!

I'm on BC pills right now and have a tubal scheduled for Dec. so, no, I don't think it's a sin.

Before we moved, I was taking the kids to a great playgroup and about half of the members of the playgroup were active Catholics. (I was raised Catholic myself, but don't attend Mass much.) At any rate, during our usual playgroup meeting one day, we got on the subject of birth control. Despite the Church's views/teachings, every Catholic in our group was either using pills or had had a tubal/husband had a vasectomy. The only person anyone in our group gave a hard time was the one woman who said she mentioned using birth control as one of her sins during confessional and had to do a penance each time. Several other members teased her for actually telling the priest during confession -- no one else considered it a real sin and, therefore, weren't willing/able to confess it!

As for "Family Planning" contraception, I have several cousins conceived using that method of birth control.

For those who feel it's a sin, I have a question. I have a medical condition that causes me to be in near constant pain if I'm not on birth control. Do you consider using birth control for medical reasons, (and having the prevention of children be a side effect/bonus) sinful?

But on another note...related to our topic... In his sermon this week, our pastor talked about how Oct is battered women's awareness month or something like that and talked about how even "blonde" jokes or women jokes lead to a demeaning of women (sorta a mild form of abuse) but then I look around the church and I see this women with five (count em') five really young kids at my initial thought is how is having 5 kids not a form of abuse...

Are you serious??? Are you truly suggesting that I (or my kids) are being abused because I have 6?? Why on earth would you even suggest that to have 5 kids, it's abuse??

An abuse if the women is not "allowed" to use BC by her husband or priest. G. Gordon Liddy in his autobiography writes about his wife banging her head on a doorjamb saying "I'm so tired. I'm so tired" after 3 or 4 children in a short time. And i guess that was when they started using BC rather than being open to all the children God could give them.
I came from a family of 10 children and my parents were not able to care for all of us.Some of my siblings are very bitter at how shortchanged they were in the parenting department. Yes, my mom is catholic but even she thinks that if you are engaging in premarital sex that you should commit another sin and use BC.
Abuse does not apply to any family that wants and can care for their children.

ITA. I also believe that neglect of a child is also a form of abuse, and neglect can happen whether you have one or a dozen.

It is a greater sin to bring a child into the world when they cannot be cared for as every human being deserves.

Going to be harsh here, but wonder how the Catholic Church would view birth control *if* alter boys could become pregnant? :earseek: And what if preists were required to marry and multiply? Can you imagine priests having to raise so many children on their salaries? The shoes' not so pretty when it's on the other foot!

Nope I definitely do not see it as a sin. I agree with some other posters I would be in a world of hurt each month if it weren't for the pill.

Of course it's not a sin. I think the religious idea that it is comes from a misinterpretation of the story of Onan and from it being a very convenient way to control women.

Also, for the record, NFP IS birth control. The idea behind birth control being a sin is that God controls conception and that people should leave that decision to Goc, and also the sex should only be for procreation. Modifying your behavior to prevent pregnancy is not "leaving it in God's hands".

You know, this and abortion are two issues I've never really been able to make up my mind on. I'm just not really in a position to say whether or not either one is a sin?

Okie dokie. Glad you clarified on that. I was ready to get out my boxing gloves! :teeth:

As to me, yes, I feel it is a sin for me to use certain types of birthcontrol.

Incidentally, how does the ROMAN Catholic Church get drawn into this stuff all the time, anyway?

I am talking about the Roman Catholic Church (I only capitalized the whole word ROMAN due to a while back post---persaonl type thing). But, I am guessing you're probably going to refer to the RCC stance on artificial birth control. However, other denominations/religions have restrictions on birth control as well, so I just wonder why the RCC is always brought up.

Ok. I thought that you were refering to specifically the RCC, no just catholic beliefs as a whole. I was going to say that the RCC is the CC that basically brough Catholicism(sp?) around the world.

I think it would be worse to have a child you didnt want. That some ppl may abuse or neglect because they didnt want the child to start with. Or that some ppl just may not be able to afford causing the family to live in poverty.
