Hello everyone! Let me start by saying that I'm aware of the passport and birth certificate rules (for the most part). We've been on 15 cruises and have never had any issues with kids sailing with a birth certificate .

So, we are 22 days from sail away and I figured I would start getting our docs together today. While getting my kids birth certificates, it occurred to me that my daughter turned 16 last month and will now need a government issued photo ID. She does not have a drivers license and we definitely won't be able to get an ID in time. It completely slipped my mind. Probably because this was a last minute booking. Anyway, at this point, I think that my only option is to expedite a passport, which we can do, but I have a question. Has anyone's 16 year old or older teenager ever traveled with a birth certificate and student ID? If that's possible, that will by far be an easier option.

I know on Carnival they will accept a student ID as ID for cruising. Don't know DCL's stand on it.

That being said, the decision is actually up to the immigration people, if they say a student ID is OK, you should fine.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it. I'd get the passport. Or check into a state ID (like a driver's license, but can take a while to get it in some states).

Can you get a state ID? That would be less expensive than a passport, and those can usually be gotten at the DMV.

Since it says "government issued" I don't think a school ID will count.

She should be able to get a state-issued "non-drivers" identification card. Contact your local DMV office (some states may issue it through a different department but they'll tell you).

Enjoy your cruise!

Don't know how long it takes in Texas, but in California it takes as long to get a state ID as it takes to get a driver's license, and it gets mailed to you - no picking up on the spot.

Couldn't you get a state issued ID at the DMV? I would think they could print those up pretty quick with a picture and everything.

Apparently, in Texas, it takes about two weeks to get the ID in the mail.

That is horrible! :(
I wonder if they could get a temporary or a copy of the ID to show in case the hard copy does not show up in time. There should be a way of providing proof that a license was applied for and on the way in that 2 week time frame.

In most states the paper temporary ID (or driver's license) that they give out in the office says it's not valid for ID.

At least in California.

It's only valid to show you've applied.

In Texas the paper version has a photo and is signed by the agent and is considered your drivers license till your card comes in.

Same in WA as far as I know.

OP I'd expedite a passport unless you can find out from the DMV if a DL or ID application will send you home with a temp that is specifically to be used as ID.

Same in California, but is only considered valid as a temporary license, not as a Government ID.

I just wanted to share an update. I called DCL over the weekend just to verify that I could not use a student ID and they said that it had to be a government issued ID. I took my daughter to the DMV this morning to get an ID. They gave us a temporary ID with picture that is valid for one month. I read that you received a temporary drivers license but not the ID. That information was incorrect. We should receive the final ID in 2 weeks, which is a full week before we leave. Problem solved! FYI- We live in Texas.

We live in Illinois. We all have passports but my disabled adult has a state Id which here you get by providing a couple forms of identification. It's same day service. She uses it for all domestic flights.
