Bin Laden - celebrations

I was just told on facebook by someone who lives in Jordan. And I quote.

"watch and read what america did in iraq and afaghanstan and if we compare this with what osama america become wanted because she did the same and more osama Not a terrorist ,america is the mother of Terrorism"

Google translate does a terrible job, it's like the spam emails saying you won a lottery in Nigeria. With friends like that......

I'm supposed to form an opinion from a complete stranger whose message I can't even decifer? don't think so. Look, last time I checked no Americans took out 3000 civilians in one fell swoop in the mideast.

I've often wondered how people live in countries with so much unrest, Palestine, Israel, etc. and how hard it must be to have to deal with that. I feel for civilians everywhere that have to deal with that kind of thing. I don't care what religion or color or nationality they are.

Children are still children and shouldn't have to live like that. Whoever they are.

Freya, I get people don't agree with the celebrating but I think the word "disgusting" set the tone for the whole thread. You might not have called the people disgusting but you still opined that what they are doing is disgusting. I don't know if you used that particular word on purpose or not, but its a strong word and the reaction was just as strong.

I have yet to find someone that is not glad or happy that Osama is gone. Not to say there aren't, just that I haven't come across anyone. How people express "happy" is different and I for one, can't judge anyone to the "extent" of their happiness and how they express it. If people want to celebrate, go to it, if they don't, thats fine too. I do understand some people feeling conflicted as they can't quite wrap their brain around being happy at someone's death. Its an internal feeling and reaction and we all have our ways of dealing with our reaction.

I spent all day at work dealing with Elementary kids. I had to tell one little girl not to pick on another kid in the middle of a group I was conducting. I even caught her sticking her tongue out at him later on. Later in the day, I had to have a discussion with another kid about name calling. It was a long damn day.

I came to the DIS to decompress and for some entertainment.

It's like I'm still back at work with all the Elementary kids.

I'm sorry..wut?;)

Just wondering who 'they' are?

I don't think we can presume to speak for anyone but ourselves. It's an opinion and we all have one. I don't think for a second that mine would change anyone else's.

From the beginning I found the word disgusting to be a trigger that made me offensive. Its such a strong word. That coupled with the comparison in the first post definitely struck a chord in me.

"they " would be the folks on here who presumed that all "americans" were fine with the celebrations... sorry if I chose to use the word "they" instead of going back and naming names....
It is simply a word...

Clearly. But on that not, not all non-Americans share the same sentiment as the OP and are cheering alongside the cheering Americans. (and I stated that earlier in the thread, but it seems to have been ignored)

Location does not matter at all. It doesn't make it okay to act Holier than thou though which is the vibe I am getting from many people today with their endless scripture quotes, misquoted MLK quotes. There is an air of arrogance to it and it just rubs me the wrong way. And since that is my opinion...I'm sure there is no problem for stating it.

:thumbsup2 I agree

I was being serious. I must have missed the post from people that said ALL americans were fine with the celebrations. I know its a word but its a very broad one.

The "they" the poster speaks of, I understood to be the people whom I was referencing who took the OP to task for her location rendering her opinion merit less.

Much of the thread was to say how they were "wrong" for their opinion.

I agree about the use of the word "disgusted". I'm of the opinion it was used intentionally because it is so harsh a word. There were other ways to express the sentiment of being disturbed or disappointed with the observed "glee" over the death of another human.

Thank you. I think it was used intentionally too but I see the explanation that followed.

Is it?
I must admit this FB comment made a huge impact on me, despite the poor English.

I don't get myself to riled up over some random rant on FB by someone I don't know who lives in Jordan.

I saw a few and yes , also the folks who said the op could have no opinion because she was not American...

This is how I felt.

Yikes, what an embarrassing thread! You people really couldn't discuss this without throwing in the nasty remarks? No wonder why some think American's are "ugly". This thread does a disservice to the "average" American.

Why is this thread still open?

ITA! There is a real pack mentality on this thread....

I really don't see how anyone can differentiate the celebrating in the streets done by the extremists or the celebrating in the streets being done by Americans....most of you say its because you are celebrating the death of one so evil, well that's what they said about their actions was that they were celebrating the deaths of evil Americans...how unbelievably sad!
A very powerful statement...

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy."

I choose not to stoop to the level of extremists as these are the images being portrayed around the world.
