Bin Laden - celebrations

Slightly OT, but I rejoice in the death of my enemies, yes, I do.

In fact, I had a party when one died just a few years ago, that was a great day, he just dropped dead.

Freya, I get people don't agree with the celebrating but I think the word "disgusting" set the tone for the whole thread. You might not have called the people disgusting but you still opined that what they are doing is disgusting. I don't know if you used that particular word on purpose or not, but its a strong word and the reaction was just as strong.

I have yet to find someone that is not glad or happy that Osama is gone. Not to say there aren't, just that I haven't come across anyone. How people express "happy" is different and I for one, can't judge anyone to the "extent" of their happiness and how they express it. If people want to celebrate, go to it, if they don't, thats fine too. I do understand some people feeling conflicted as they can't quite wrap their brain around being happy at someone's death. Its an internal feeling and reaction and we all have our ways of dealing with our reaction.

I find the OP's use of the word "disgusting" very offensive. And coming from a non American, who didn't walk a mile in our shoes after 9/11, makes it far more offensive. Our lives were greatly changed by the actions of this monster OBL, and I am thrilled he is dead. No, I didn't dance in the streets but I cheered when I heard the news that he was dead! I feel the OP is entitled to her opinion but feel she kicked a hornet's nest by posting it here. Some things are better left unsaid! :sad2:

Let me start by saying how happy I am that Bin Laden was caught. I think it´s amazing that the US Army was able to find him after all these years!
BUT....and yes, there is a but, I am disgusted by the celebrations in the streets. Just as much as I was disgusted by seeing muslim celebrations after 9/11.

The killing of 3000 innocent office workers and the killing of one ultra-terrorist are NOT moral equivalents. We SHOULD be out in the streets celebrating, big style.

I saw it, cut and paste....his name is now removed....doesn't matter, whoever said it, its a very powerful statement.

It mattered enough for you to correct it.

MLK didn't matter enough for you to use anything he actually said.

And while it is nice sentiment, not only is it a misquote, but it is a viral "pack mentality" that sounds real good and makes people think and go, yeah, you are right--but I have, I suppose, a skeptical mind that from a justice perspective that all folks would be against the death of someone who say, killed their own loved one, killed their child, their baby, the guy that tortured a man's family before burning down the house...

I have a hard time believing that every single person who is misquoted MLK today would not rejoice in the death of someone who has caused such great pain to their family.

Sure--there are people who would not, because they do believe that they should not rejoice for whatever reason---

but the problem with the idea of a "pack mentality" as you blame others for doing---well, this whole moral high ground pack is a wolf in sheep's clothing. It has turned into a viral clique and I find it IMPOSSIBLE to believe that all the folks who have joined truly believe that 100%. For if they did, they would not need to recycle quotes that a famous peace loving person never said to further make their point that "rejoicing" is wrong.

So yes--it does matter that you attributed it to MLK. You joined the pack to proclaim moral superiority and shame folks whom you disagree with. You stated it as a FACT to back your opinion as well as countless others. So much so that CNN did an article about it.

And the Mark Twain quoters weren't any better with their flip side quotes that also were attributed incorrectly to Mr. Twain.

It does matter.

:thumbsup2

I don't even think the celebrations were that out of line...what, we're not allowed to chant USA? :confused3

"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy." ~Jessica Dovey

"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."~ MLK Jr.

I believe these to be the quotes people have been trying to actually quote. I could be wrong, I wasn't there when they said it. Both nice sentiments. Neither of which I completely believe. Again, my choice.

I bet alot of people who have using those quotes the last couple days don't really believe it either. They just copy and paste because they can't come up with anything to say themselves and just want to follow the herd ;)
(And before anyone here gets up in arms, if you do believe it, then obviously I'm not speaking about you).

I didn't go out and celebrate. But you know what? I have a right to peaceful assembly if I want. I am an American, do not tread on my rights, especially people who aren't from here. And for those who are here and have the same rights, even though I respect your right to express your freedom of speech, I am still going to celebrate.

If I want to take the flag, wave it around in the air like a helicopter to show my happiness OBL is gone, then suck it up buttercup, because that is also my right.

Now this nation that I love
Has fallen under attack
A mighty sucker punch came flyin in
From somewhere in the back
Soon as we could see clearly
Through our big black eye
Man, we lit up your world
Like the 4th of july

Hey uncle sam
Put your name at the top of his list
And the statue of liberty
Started shaking her fist
And the eagle will fly
Man, it's gonna be hell
When you hear mother freedom
Start ringing her bell
And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you
Brought to you courtesy of the red white and blue

Justice will be served
And the battle will rage
This big dog will fight
When you rattle his cage
And you'll be sorry that you messed with
The US of A

'cause we'll put a boot in your a$$
It's the american way

Are some of you still going on because a DISer found the behavior of a handful of people "disgusting?" She has already stated that English isn't even her first language.

Can't we let this go?

I'd never seen that link before, and it made me cry. For what it's worth my family laid flowers outside your Embassy in London after 9/11 and cried for your country.

 Thank you. That link was something I saw a couple years ago and I just remembered it so I looked it up. This was not just an American tragedy...it was worldwide. People from all over the world were killed. It happened on American soil but that does not give Americans the sole right to grieve or judge what is going on in this country. I think most people have the sense to know that not every person in America thinks that no one can judge because they don't get it but it is embarrassing to have that image. 9/11 affected the way that we travel everywhere, not just America.

Yes she said English is her second language, she has over 7,600 post on the DIS and in her signature is a link to her blog all written in perfect English.
