Bin Laden - celebrations

I agree. I find it very disturbing that so many people are treating it like a sporting event and our "team" won. Innocent people have died. Soldiers are still in harm's way. It's a serious situation and the partying in the streets seems to be making light of it. The celebrations in the street remind me too much of celebrations in the Middle East.

Bin Laden is gone, thank heavens, but terrorism will still continue and I'm worried about an uptick in events. My dd's boyfriend is in Afghanistan right now and I'm worried about his safety and those who are fighting with him. I'd prefer to hold off on the celebrations until everyone is home.

I don't think you'd begrudge our military celebrating. I'm sure the SEALS must have at least high fived each other and what about the cadets at West Point? If that's okay (and I believe it is) why can't the people?

And I am wondering why this thread would get closed? It´s just a thread to voice my opinion on the matter like so many other threads here. If the only threads that get closed are the one stating similar opinions to mine, I find that quite interesting...

Maybe you should ask a Mod instead of asking a poster.

No, believe me, I wouldn´t. I have friends who lived in NYC and lost very close friends on 9/11.

I am sorry for your losses.

I am finding the complaints about the celebration to be coming across probably in a manner in which they are not intended. Be humble, but don't judge those who feel the need to celebrate.

I will say one thing--I feel people are celebrating that we finally "caught" the guy, not necessarily that we "killed" the guy--though I Am sure there are those people that are.

The people on 9/11 were just thrilled that they killed innocent Americans, period, end of story.

I find the "celebrations" to be quite opposite in what they are celebrating.

And while I am not "celebrating" as it were, I am not going to rain on the parade of those who feel called to the celebration.

OMG, why are you picking on me? I'm just telling her this is going to get closed!

My goodness - I live in New York and was working there on 9/11 - I fly my flag every day and I AM CELEBRATING!

Snappy, no I wasn't sorry for the misunderstanding. Another thread was started in between this and the first, I was agreeing with you.
My comment after that was not directed to you. It was to people who have complained about the celebrations to me hearing the national anthem as I did last night always brings tears to my eyes. A girl in Times Square just sang it so beautifully.

The only celebrations I've seen are on a couple of college campuses. Not exacty a nationwide party. You cannot believe everything you see on tv.

I am not in favor of celebrating anyone's death. However, I feel no compunction against celebrating the overall increase of good in the world that this cretin's death has caused.

Swalphin, I disagreed with you on another thread, but you know what? It's like how I can criticize my own kids but someone else better not---meaning when I read the OP, I got angry! I can criticize MY country because I love my country, but don't be criticizing MY country on an important thing like how Americans choose to react when you are not one of "us". No one can understand what we as Americans have gone through unless you're an American (or whatever) living here.

I feel a bit ashamed to admit this, but so be it.

I see your point, it is worse when it comes from someone who has not lived in this country and heard the stories of what their families members have gone through. Not only 911, there were plenty of battles fought before this one. I had an uncle die at 18 at war, he never had a chance to be a part of my life. The stories from Korea, that I have heard they are so horrible. And worse the stories they will not share.

Wow. Very interesting. I usually love to hear how others view things going on in MY country. I value hearing different opinions, even if they just validate my own (which may be totally different).

Well the mod wasn´t telling me this thread was going to get closed but a poster was.

My grandfather was a flight medic in Korea. He did not like to talk about ti much, but the little I have heard is horrible, truly horrible.

How would a poster be able to tell you why another thread was closed? Only the Mod who closed it gould tell you why. If you feel like you're being shut out because of an unpopular opinion, take it to the people who hold the power.

Why do you assume that just because I have never lived in the US I don´t know any Americans? My dad lived in the US, so did my aunt and my cousin. My aunts FIL died in Vietnam, when his son (my cousins father) was a very young boy.
My cousin has lived in the US for many years now and I have visited w. her and her family. I have friends living in many places of the US, some of them in NYC.

It's a fact. Look it up. I was not being political.
George Bush started a fund for Osama? I don't think so. I would have to see it in writing from a credible source. Not everything you read on the internet is true. Prove it.

Freyja, Under normal circumstances, I would agree with you. But You don't and can't understand what this as an event means to us Americans (including non-Americans who live here). Not your fault. This is a very personal series of events, from 9-11 to bin laden's death. Please try to understand it logically since emotionally you just can't. No offense meant to you, just explaining.

Whatever may or may not be true, let's be careful. The mods are giving us MAJOR leeway with these threads. The more threads they have to lock, the more likely all of them will be shut down.

You're not understanding. There are millions of Americans who live no where near Ground Zero and don't know anyone connected with 9-11, BUT it still affected them directly! We were in a state of panic. What was done to us here goes much deeper than you having family and friends who've lived here. Please try to see. This is an very emotionally charged issue for us here.

Lol, that would be similar if people actually had opinions about your country. Most people I know who visit think it is cold and pretty. Not much else is ever heard about it. Pretty easy to have a cavalier attitude.
