first off, i do not have a bikini body, so i haven't had the inkling to go in public in a bikini. right before school ended a mom showed up at the bus stop in a very skimpy bikini and nothing else but flip flops. then last weekend at the movies there was a man and his daughter (about 9-10 y.o.) and she was wearing short shorts and a bikini top in the line for popcorn.

imo, neither of these are appropriate, and trust me, i am the farthest thing from a prude. although i wouldn't mind looking like the bus stop mom.;)

opinions?

I think for little girls (like under the age of 8 or so) it's fine. I see these little girls in the store/around town and it's really not an issue. There are tons of swim clubs and the beach really isn't that far, so that is not an issue.

Moms-- well, you really should put some clothes on no matter how great you look. People will talk about you!

Teens- well, you should at least put some shorts on over top the bottoms as well. There are two teen girls that wander around the neighborhood in string bikinis and NOTHING else. My kids (one a teen) has his own opinion about that-- it's sort of skanky!

I am not comfortable in a bikini, and I am in decent shape. I just feel it screams LOOK AT ME!!! and there are people I don't want looking at me. ;) I think that is the problem I have with teens trotting around in them, too. It isn't just the young guys leering at them. I find it creepy that a thirteen year old girl is going to attract that kind of attention. Having said that, I wouldn't tell anyone except my own children what is appropriate.

I agree.

I think when someone does that in public they're just looking for attention. Imo just because they can doesn't mean they should;) I wouldn't embarass my kids by showing up at their bus stop like that.

Just picturing it and it reminds of a what I envision a xxx movie set up to be like. LOL! I am afriad if I was there I would have just started to crack up with laughter at the absurdity of it.

That's probably true, and of the myriad ways young people (teens and twenty-somethings) seek attention these days (vandalism, for example), this is among the least objectionable, if at all.

Imo just because they can doesn't mean they should;)
That cuts both ways. Because they can doesn't mean they shouldn't.

By the same token, if they can't, then I think we all can agree that they shouldn't!!!

What she said. Once a kid gets to be about 10 or 11 years old, it's tie to buy them a cover up or tell them to wear a t-shirt or something if they are going to be going in publc wearing a bikini. Like it or not, there are pervs everywhere.

As far as the mom at the bus stop, please:rolleyes: can you say "Look how pathetic I am...I have to wear a bikini to get attention".

If you are at the beach, fine, wear your bikini, the bus stop, no. How hard it is to even just throw a t-shirt over it to walk your kid to the bus, poor kid.

Some people just have no sense of decorum.

I would personally wear a cover up but living in a beach town in FL, most people go around in swim suits.

I think that different situations call for different clothing.

At the beach or pool? If you can wear that bikini comfortably and don't feel you're exposing your "privates", then go for it.

But that same bikini is totallly inappropriate elsewhere-- at the bus stop, the supermarket, church, the library.

Likewise, the capris and T shirt I'm wearing right now would NOT be appropriate in the school where I teach or at my niece's wedding.

I think kids can and do have a lot more flexibility, but it seems there' are a whole lot of adults who feel that whatever they want is appropriate, simply because they would prefer it to be that way.

I've never worn a bikini out if I were going indoors!

To the park, sure. To the pool, sure. Anywhere but direct summer sunlight and I'd freeeeze!

Great for pool, park or anywhere you are getting sun. Even at sporting events with bikini top/shorts works.

I don't even care if you have a "perfect" body. If you are fine with it, go for it.

Beyond that though, no. Don't wear one to the bus stop or when you run out to get milk at the local store..
