My family is planning to bring our bikes with us to the Fort in a couple of weeks. I have a 6 and 3 year old that love to bike so we aren't planning to rent a golf cart. I have a couple of questions. How far of a ride is it from the 1500 loop (if we get placed there) to the beach area? Are the roads well lit at night? Thanks!

I would not say it is "well lit", but it is not dark. I would highly recommend a headlamp or light for bike for safety reasons and I think the Fort might actually reauire it. We used our bikes on our trip and had no difficulty.

You will have a moderate ride from 1500, but not long by any means. I made the trip several times with wife and kids. It's flat, sidewalk can be a bit narrow at times if you stick to it. Really a good all around place for bike riders.

1) Twice or thrice a month, the wife and I bike at The Fort.
2) We just pop the bikes on the car and park behind Pioneer Hall in the employee area.
3) At dusk or later, you ALWAYS need lights front and rear.
4) Even on "well lit" roads, the lights is low.
5) And, drivers do not always pay attention and look for walkers/bikers.

Thanks so much for the information! We will need to get lights for our bikes. Will be there soon!

You pick up lights at a flea market. There are dollar stores and you can get red or white lights to put on your bike for less then $3. We buy ours there so it the bike falls over and breaks the light no big loss.

We ride often at the Fort and lights are a must and helmets for the young ones.
You will love it.

Rusty-how to you get on property? Is it with an Annual Pass?

You will love biking at the fort. There is paved trail from near the horse barn to Wilderness Lodge that is great. We always see wildlife such as deer. It is about a mile. From 1500 to the marina area is approximately 3/4 mile. If the 3 year old can manage you will have a great time. Lights are a must. A word of caution: a couple of years ago a youngster veered from the sidewalk into the path of traffic. The results were terrible. Please insure yours know the dangers of riding on the roadways. Hope you have a wonderful trip.

We were in loop 1600 a few weeks ago which is just beside 1500. I found that my 5 year old(who is a good biker) could manage the trip to the marina; however, after long days and at night it's a bit treacherous and not always enjoyable.

We ended up getting a golf cart for the evenings we'd be at the MK or taking the buses from the south end. If possible it's nice to have both options depending on where you're going. We'd bike around and zip to the Meadow or even over to Wilderness Lodge for supper. Whenever it was rainy or we knew we'd be out after dark the cart was handy and safer.
