We have bikes and will be bringing our own. I'm wondering which resorts offer nice biking -- more than just a short loop. Are all of them totally open in the blazing sun? Or are some biking areas partially shaded? Are any of you Disney-philes also bike riders?

I would love to hear your advice and thoughts!

Thanks!

Wilderness lodge has a nice path between it and Ft. Wilderness. You could also continue that by riding around Ft. Wilderness. It's mostly in the shade.

Denise in MI

Old Key West has the best bike path by miles its quite long but its quite nice

You need to have a plan to secure your bikes at night and while you are in the parks. You won't be able to ride on the roads outside the resorts. Just inside the resorts.

There have been a few bike accidents at Ft Wilderness in recent years. In one a young boy was hit by a bus and killed. You really have to be careful with all the traffic.

If you are staying in a studio, you won't have much room to store more than one bike. You may just want to rent bikes at the resort. And you won't be able to leave the bikes secured outside unless you leave them in your vehicle.

We enjoy biking at Port Orleans. You can ride to and from Riverside and French Quarters along the river.

We rented bikes at Fort Wilderness and it was such a great place to ride! You could see rabbits and peacocks running around!

I was going to ask how they planned to store their bikes as well. Unless they were going into a villa I would think storage could be a big problem. Renting seems like a good compromise.

We rented a surrey bike at CSR. We went around the lake. It was a nice ride. If we didn't rent the bike, we would never see the beauty of CSR from the other side of the lake and we would have not seen the Ranchos area, nor the Casitas.

Ft Wilderness has lots of places to ride around, some thru the forest nature trails. We did the Segway Tour there, and it was fun. Saw some deer.

Last February I stayed at Caribbean Beach and brought my bike, and absolutey loved biking there. You can ride around the lake and take in the scenery - in a couple of areas you go over wooden bridges that wind through the vegetation, which is cool. It's not a huge long trip around CBR, but certainly enough to enjoy - I usually went around the lake at least twice on any bike ride. You can also go down by Trinidad South and bike along the lake there.

To store my bike, I had to keep it in the back seat of my car (a small Honda Civic no less), but it worked out well. I couldn't keep it in my room - my room was on the second floor and there are no elevators, and I wasn't sure if CBR wanted bikes in the rooms (no way I was going to be discreet about dragging a bike to my room up a flight of stairs). So I just left it in the car. I worried about that, but fortunately it was fine.

For the best biking, I drove over to Fort Wilderness and went everywhere over there. Lots of territory to cover! Had the best time. :)

In order, I would volunteer:
. . . Wilderness Lodge to/around Fort Wilderness
. . . Old Key West
. . . Port Orleans Riverside to/around Port Orleans French Quarter

OKW does have a long trail around the resort and the clincher is the path that takes you all the way to DTD. Good luck!!!
