Biggest Loser "Sizzlin' Hot" Summer Challenge

QOTD Sunday, June 3, 2012: Do you think tracking food is an important part of weight loss?
* Yes, definitely!!!

I've noticed that when I don't track food I tend to go off plan. I've gotten better with it over time. I was at Disney for a week in May and actually lost weight and didn't track a bite I ate. I feel "off" when I don't track what I'm eating. I've gotten so used to doing it its just become second nature.

QOTD Sunday, June 3, 2012: Do you think tracking food is an important part of weight loss?
* Yes, definitely
* Maybe, it depends on the person
* No, I don't think it's necessary

I think that tracking food is definitely important to a weight loss journey. I know that when I have been my most successful it is when I would write down every bite of food, every minute of exercise, and every glass of water. I start out well with tracking, but then after a few weeks I slowly fall of the wagon. I think the easiest thing is to try and remember what motivated me to lose weight in the first place.

I took the quiz and this time, I am prepared! I have my support system in place and am losing weight for myself. The latter is key. I am no longer trying to lose weight because my mother keeps nagging me. I'm doing this for myself and my health.

This is a great QOTD! Here are some HH suggestions for today. Are your measuring cups and spoons ready? Buffy had a great idea! Organize the drawer you found them in-it's a good head start for an upcoming mini-challenge. Did you find a good-sized water bottle or glass? Lots of us talk about how important it is to drink water. I keep a water with me at all times now. It's all about being prepared!

I bought an extra set of measuring cups and spoons, so I always have one set available!!!

QOTD:

I took the quiz and it says "Well on your way"

I think the biggest thing for me will be not letting 1 slip up get me off track and to stay motivated even if the scale doesn't move or moves in the wrong direction one week.

I got the same result from the quiz. That is my biggest problem too. I get this all or nothing attitude. I know that about myself, and I still let it beat me.

Boy, we're close. Last year I was turning 53 in August with a DS15! Don't have the puppy though. We aren't around enough.

Now I am turning 54 in August with a DS16.

******************************************************
So far, so good. I went over my points yesterday, but used my splurge points since Friday is my splurge day. OP today, exercised yesterday and then got in a long walk today. Went geocaching and dragged DS along. My phone died near the end and I was all turned around. DS wanted to go in one direction (which was the right way), but I saw a picnic area with people there and we headed to that instead. Turned out it was a boy scout gathering! They headed us in the right direction :rotfl:. DH thinks it is hilarious that the boy scouts were there to help us get unlost. The phone would have helped, need to keep that sucker charged but I used too much juice looking for the caches. But it is a great way to get out and walk!

So now off to turn in my weight and inches. I have my ticker set to my total pounds lost since I started this journey a few years ago. It lets me know how far I have come and that I can go it! Also going to give coaching a whirl. Am a little timid about it, but hoping I can do a good job! Sent a PM to Janis for August.

This is a great group, glad to see all the familiar names and a few new ones! Summer should be quieter, so after these first couple of weeks, which should be stressful at work (switching to a new account system) it should settle down...

Looking forward to all our success this summer :goodvibes !

My birthday is August 7 - when's yours?? My DS is a Scout - and he is asking for a solar charger that hangs on a back pack to charge his phone. Something you might want to look into!!!!

It was very rainy here today - with more to come. But we had a nice day with my Father, did the grocery shopping, bought some clothes for DS. Bought some really great steaks for DH's birthday bash tomorrow night. If anyone is from North of Boston - well worth the drive to North Andover to Butcher Boy for some steaks. We had a nice baked haddock dinner tonight. Tomorrow I have to go to the bakery :eek: to pick up dessert. Lucky for me - our local bakery sells tiny cakes. Equal to say 2 small slices of cake.

Everyone have a great day!!!

Janis

Definitely YES!

I find it helps not only in the accountability on a daily basis but also provides a record to which I can refer when I hit the rough times when the scale does not move. It helps me ensure that I don't eat too many calories but also helps make sure I eat enough that my metabolism does not shut down on me.

Good Sunday morning to you all.

Woke up to a rainy day here.....the kind that makes you want to curl up in bed all day. But I am up and getting my day going.

Planning to go see Dark Shadows.....love Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Will carry my gym bag and stop at the gym while I am out and about.

Ian so excited to see all the victories that you are having and also the determination and resolve for those that are facing challenges to your days. Let's keep it up.

Back later!

Christopher

Are they working? DH and DS15 were stuck earlier.

Hi All I'm still playing catch-up which is even harder now because I laughed at your wee family jumping around and my 5yr old son asked what your DH was saying? I told him and he is now running around shouting "gaah" and throwing his hands in the air in perfect synch with your DH:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Whew finally made it through all the chit-chat:)
I have made a PLAN for this challenge
1. Lose 12 lbs
2. Exercise at least 20 minutes 5xweek
3. Eat 5 portions of fruit and veg daily

I took the quiz and am prepared for sucess:banana:
Dreading today as it is cemetary Sunday here and I dont normally go but it's the 1st since my dad died and my mum needs the support! I find it hard without my dad but it's so much harder for her so I will suck it up, fight the tears and go! Wish me luck. Sorry I know that this isnt weight related other than I am typing this so that I'm not eating junk (thanks Pamela for the advice last challenge):) Cant wait for tomorrow.
Hope you all have a great OP day:)

This one is a tough one for me to answer. I want to say all three :confused3 I can see it definitely healping as having what you eat right there is black and white is a bit of a reality check. You can also use it to see trends and maybe how to overcome the issues. The maybe answer because some people just aren't geared to learning that way. And the no because people still lose weight and don't track.

I am kinda on the fence here because I am not sure where I myself fall on this. So I am going to experiment. Going to track my food for a few days and see if it helps any. Told you I was going to take any and all advice during this challenge. :goodvibes Come Friday morning weigh in I will see if it helped.:goodvibes

BTW: Good morning all :coffee:

I think everything is weight related. A person never knows what is really going on on the other side of the computer screen. Maybe a random post is how a person is getting thru a tough moment and it is like you said, a way to stop grabbing some junk food. So I don't mind off topics, I am here to help. I am sorry about your dad. I hope you make it thru day ok. Be gentle with you.

Good Sunday morning friends!!

Well..... I sat out in the rain for about 6 hours yesterday at DD's swim meet. What a cold miserable day it was. I'm not sure how the swimmers didn't end up with hypothermia! I did have a tent that I set up under some trees, plus I was wearing a hoodie and a waterproof rainjacket.... but the wind was crazy at times and by the end of the day I think I was nearly as wet as the swimmers! DH came along for the day.... I was glad for the company, but he spent some time in the car staying warm and dry. Guess I should have followed suit, but I didn't want to miss anything. DH made two trips to Dunkins for hot beverages during the day..... a HUGE coffee and a HUGE tea made the day a bit more bearable.

Today we are swimming again, but it seems a bit clearer.... well, it isn't pouring rain at the moment at least! :rotfl: When I'm done here I'm off to check weather.com!

DS spent the day with his new(ish) girlfriend and her family yesterday and came home all smiles, so it seems like it was a great day for him. He attended her dance recital and then they all went back to her house for dinner and some games. I felt bad that I wasn't able to help with any driving, but fortunately we only live about 6 miles from them (our town is huge, so my kids have had friends "in town" that take us 30+ minutes to get to!). He is off to a big paintball tournament today that he has been looking forward to for a few weeks. DH will stay home today to be able to pick up DS.

I did well with eating yesterday, despite the temptation later in the day to indulge in something rich and HOT and delicious. I ended up with a baked sweet potato from Wendy's for dinner on the ride home and then a cup of my 1 point special hot drink and a cracker with a bit of peanut butter as my evening snack. Ended the day exactly on points!

There is a tentative plan for swim families to go out to dinner tonight, so I will be careful with my points at breakfast and lunch.

Well.... I need to leave here in about 10 minutes to drop off DS, so I'm gonna fly for now. Hopefully I'll have a moment to pop on and do some catching up here before I have to leave for the day......................P

Without a doubt, YES! I love to graze (does anyone else feel like a cow when you use that statement? :rolleyes:) and keeping a found journal has helped me so much! :wizard: I the use MyFitnessPal app on my Droid. What does everyone else use?

QOTD Saturday, June 2, 2012: Are you prepared to reach your goals? If you don't want to take the quiz, you can just answer the question or share your thoughts on what it takes to be prepared to reach your goals.

According to Sparkspeople, I am prepared for success. i do know it's a long, hard row to hoe and I'm ready to do what it takes.

i do think that tracking food is VITAL to success. I know that I, along with countless others, do not have a good grasp on portion sizes and the calories in food. Since i now have to track carbs, I've been unpleasantly surprised numerous times - even when i THINK I've made healthy choices.

Judging from yesterday, I'm going to struggle through June. My son graduates from high school this Friday and the graduation parties have already started. Three open houses yesterday and 2 more today. I've lost track of how many more we've been invited to, but healthy choices seem to be missing from party menus so far. Not a vegetable to be found! while i didn't have any trouble bypassing the cake and cookies, after 6 hours, I needed something that wasn't sausage or nacho cheese!

Today, I'll be teaching a dog obedience course and then heading out for more parties. At least I'll have gotten my exercise in first!

Good evening everyone! I know a lot of us struggle with sweets, so I wanted to share a great simple recipe I found that is portioned controlled and only about 100-150 calories. Its called 3-2-1 Cake, some of you may of heard of it, but I was just told about it a week ago.

3-2-1 Cake

Ingrediants
1 Box Angel Food cake mix
1 Box Cake mix ANY flavor
2 Tbsp Water

Directions
In a ziploc bag, combine the two cake mixes together and mix well. For each individual cake serving, take out 3 Tablespoons of the cake mix combination and mix it with 2 Tablespoons of water in a small microwave-safe container. Microwave on high for 1 minute, and you have your own instant individual little cake! Keep remaining cake mixture stored in the ziploc bag and use whenever you feel like a treat! You can top each cake with a dollop of fat free whipped topping and/or some fresh fruit.
**I store my mix in a tupperware container with the directions taped to the outside, for my "forgetful" DH
:rotfl:

Interesting. Got any calorie count or Points for this??? ETA: DUH.... just re-read your post. Guess I would presume the higher count, just to be sure. I'm sure some wonderful math geek could do the figuring and figure out how many calories in each box of mix, add those numbers together, figure out how many Tb. total, divide by that number, etc. But it won't be me!

We talked about our goals and plans but how do we know if they are realistic? Are we ready to reach our goals? Are we READY TO LAUNCH?!? :confused3

Here is a great little quiz on sparkpeople.com to help you figure out the answer to these questions called

Are You Prepared to Reach Your Goals?

Anyone can set a goal, but it takes preparation, planning and motivation to see it through to the end. Are you on the path to success?

QOTD Saturday, June 2, 2012: Are you prepared to reach your goals? If you don't want to take the quiz, you can just answer the question or share your thoughts on what it takes to be prepared to reach your goals.

First of all.... LOVE the Space Mountain graphics!

I believe that I am prepared to reach my goal.... in fact, I believe I've been "in orbit" for a few years now, as I "launched" this journey in 2008. I need to tweak some of my habits, as a few things have been let to slide lately, but I haven't totally fallen out of orbit and crashed to earth!

I took the quiz and this time, I am prepared! I have my support system in place and am losing weight for myself. The latter is key. I am no longer trying to lose weight because my mother keeps nagging me. I'm doing this for myself and my health.

GOOD FOR YOU!!! This is a big improvement in your thinking and attitude!

Love this! I bought several sets of measuring spoons a few years ago because I was constantly having to stop and wash a Tablespoon measure (salad dressing and peanut butter mostly). Then I got tired of having SO MANY measuring spoons in the drawer.... so I got rid of a bunch of the smaller ones and just kept the Tablespoons. I have two or three complete sets, plus 2 or 3 extra Tablespoons. I also have 3 sets of measuring cups. It bothers me that they don't all match, but I'm too cheap to dump them all and start fresh. Maybe someday if I find a good sale or a set I really love.

This is a tempting month. My husband is a HUGE basketball fan and our team - the Celtics are in the playoffs. I'm not sure how much you all know about New England and sports but we are crazy! Extremely loyal fans, so every game is a party, with junk food. So hard to say no, but I'm trying hard to change my thinking that you don't need to celebrate with food, but it's gonna be a tough lesson to learn!

I see you are also in NH. Do you mind sharing where? I'm in Weare..... a bit north/west of Manchester.

if you change nothing, nothing will change

AMEN! Thanks for taking the time to share all these great quotes.

You WILL do a full Disney marathon one day.... I'm sure of it. It will still be there waiting for you when you are ready. :hug:

Let's continue our journeys to the Happiest Place on Earth. :smickey:

fastpass-400.jpg

We DISboards planning types know understanding the ins and outs of FASTPASS is a great way to help you get the most out of a trip to Disney and take in lots of attractions while other people are stuck waiting in line.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a FASTPASS to help you with your weight loss?

What if I told you there was something that you could do to help you lose TWICE as much weight than you would otherwise?!? Would you be interested? Would you be willing to try it? Well, you can! And all you have to do is keep a food diary! :thumbsup2

A 2008 study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that dieters who tracked their food intake in a "food diary" lost twice as much weight as those who didn't track their food. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/07/080708080738.htm

It is incredibly easy to underestimate the number of calories that you consume and overestimate the number of calories you burn when exercising. It is a real eye opener when you first start tracking. :scared1:

Here is a link to an article on sparkpeople.com about how important keeping track of your food can be on this journey to good health. http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?id=394

Which brings me to the QOTD.

QOTD Sunday, June 3, 2012: Do you think tracking food is an important part of weight loss?
* Yes, definitely
* Maybe, it depends on the person
* No, I don't think it's necessary

Have a great evening all! ::MickeyMo

For those of you who know me from previous challenges, you probably remember that I am VERY faithful to my food journal. I've got 4+ years of notebooks to prove it! I think it has been a HUGE KEY to my success this time around. Use whatever excuse you want to tell me why you don't NEED to keep a journal or why it is too much bother, etc, etc, but I will stand strong in my belief that you will have more success, longer-term success if you keep a food journal/food diary. Combine a HONEST food journal with accurate food measuring/weighing, and there is NO REASON why you shouldn't have success.

Whew finally made it through all the chit-chat:)
I have made a PLAN for this challenge
1. Lose 12 lbs
2. Exercise at least 20 minutes 5xweek
3. Eat 5 portions of fruit and veg daily

First of all.... :hug: for your difficult day. Is cemetary Sunday like our Memorial Day? Is it for remembering loved ones and visiting the cemetary and bringing flowers and the like?? Good of you to be there for your Mom when she really needs it. Supporting OTHERS during their difficult times makes us stronger people in the long run.

Second... you're welcome. Funny you should mention this. DD and I were just talking yesterday or the day before and reflecting about times when we have made better/worse food choices and how we feel about those choices now, in hindsight. When DH had his accident a few years ago it would have been so easy for me to give into a big CALORIC pity party in the ICU waiting room. I was exhausted and stressed and worried and there was a bakery one floor down! Do you know how easy it would have been to just sit in that waiting room and cry and eat??? But I didn't. And I don't have a moment of regret. It wouldn't have helped DH get better any faster..... and in the long run it wouldn't have helped me deal with the stress any better. I would have ended up piling food guilt on TOP of the other stress. So I came on here to visit my friends/support system whenever I could, I took walks around the medical center, kept family members informed of the details, visited with DH when I could, etc. Having this group to talk with and "visit" with really helped. Can't eat and type at the same time, right?? ;)

*******************

Okay.... did some reading and a bit of catching up. Lots of new friends to meet and lots of "old" friends to say hi to!!! Looking forward to the days coming up when I can stay caught up here and not just do these "drive-by" postings!

We are off to a GREAT start with CC's HH, Lisa's QOTD, and Buffy's quotes! I think we are setting ourselves up for a GREAT summer challenge. I'm excited to get back to my fighting weight and fit in my shorts from last May (just a few pounds away!).

Need to wake DD. Surprised she is still sleeping, but not sure how late she stayed up last night. We need to leave here about 11 am again. Rain seems to be holding off for now. TTYL.....................P

QOTD Sunday, June 3, 2012: Do you think tracking food is an important part of weight loss?
* Yes, definitely
* Maybe, it depends on the person
* No, I don't think it's necessary

YES, YES, YES! Tracking is a huge part of being successful in my weight loss success - it's way to easy for me to lose track of how much creamer I put in my coffee if I don't measure it out! I also like looking back on my food journal on weeks that I've had "good" loses (any loss is good, but you know what I mean!) so I can re-create it.

I hope this isn't off topic, and if so, I will change it to a PM. But, it does have to do with exercise and the challenge since this is my main form of working out.

Today, I'll be teaching a dog obedience course and then heading out for more parties. At least I'll have gotten my exercise in first!

Hi! :dogdance: I have question for you...maybe you can help? I walk every morning between 1.5-3 miles with my calm (and obedient) Boston Terrier. Today, while we were about 1 mile from home, a dog came charging at us from the back yard of a house we were passing. He was not on a leash, and obviously was not fenced. He had teeth bared and was growling/barking.

Of course, I screamed and then immediately prayed. The dog stopped but continued to growl, bark and show us his (VERY POINTY!) teeth. What did my dog do? Like a wonderful protective dog, he hid behind my legs. :rotfl: Eventually, the owner came and got the dog and kept saying "he doesn't bite, just barks". I was like, whatever! Put your dog on a leash!

Afterward, I was very shaken and nervous. ( I even fell at one point.) I have just started exercising in the past 3 weeks and walking my neighborhood is the easiest way for me to get my miles in. Do you have any suggestions for safety while walking my dog? Would carrying a stick help? I really have no idea because my dog (and all other dogs I have owned) are so obedient and peaceful. Thanks in advance!

QOTD Sunday, June 3, 2012: Do you think tracking food is an important part of weight loss?

I'm going to say yes and it depends on the person. I think the older you are the more important the food part is vs the exercise part.
For me, it is a resounding yes!! Pamela taught me that it's the hidden calories that end up biting you in the butt, like the dollop of milk in your tea x 3 in a day. I never realized just how many calories there were in salad dressing, mayo, ketchup, sugar. ETC.

LOL That's funny! I promise it is true too! DH does that a lot lately!

I took the quiz and am prepared for sucess:banana:
Dreading today as it is cemetary Sunday here and I dont normally go but it's the 1st since my dad died and my mum needs the support! Cry!! It's ok, you don't have to be strong for mum. You can still support her but miss your Dad too.
And don't apologize for it not being weight related. Emotions, feelings, joy, sadness, it's all related. How many of us are emotional eaters?!? Quite a few! I know when Pamela's husband was hurt, she was here a lot to get through the feelings and emotions. When Nancy had her baby, when my DH was traveling so much. We are here to support each other day in and day out. With the good and the bad!

AMEN! Thanks for taking the time to share all these great quotes.

You WILL do a full Disney marathon one day.... I'm sure of it. It will still be there waiting for you when you are ready. :hug:

Well, funny you mention this. DH and I talked this morning and I said "I think I will do the 1/2 and we'll aim for the 25th anniversary of the full and our anniversary". He came back into the room and said "why can't we do both". I'm like "both what?, the 1/2 and the full?" He said "Both the 20th and the 25th" I was like :confused: and :eek:

So, now I'm not sure what the heck we are doing!!
I have until June 15 to decide because that is when I want to pay for the race.

Quote of the day

Eat for the body you want, not the body you have

In going along with the theme of the QOTD, I am going with this quote.
Pamela taught me (she teaches me a lot of stuff!!) that we will never be able to eat like a skinny person, we will always have to eat like we are fat. She did say it more eloquently than I did though! LOL
But it's true. We won't get to the end of the journey and then eat and be like we were before. This is a lifestyle change, a forever change. It's something we will have to maintain and work at for the rest of our lives. Sounds daunting, but it's worth it if it gives us 20 -30 more years on this earth to be with family, friends and to make a difference in the world.

QOTD Saturday: I took the quiz and it says I am Prepared for Success!! Which is great because I feel more prepared than ever before.

QOTD Sunday: I have to say that, yes, logging your food is VERY important. I think that is one of my failure areas because I am so bad at it! I really enjoyed WW the 3 or 4 times I've signed up, but I don't succeed because I always forget to log. I always say I'm going to do better, and I try different programs, even paper and pen, but I haven't found a way to steadily do it yet.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the last challenge I decided Fridays would be my splurge day, because my family loves pizza Fridays. But then I spent the rest of the week trying to make up for it, so my progress was slow. This past Friday we did have pizza Friday, but I got a thin crust vegie pizza and only ate two!! It was good and I felt good. Baby steps :laughing:
Glad I came on as usual you guys really pulled me through so thanks:)
Cememtary Sunday sounds pretty like your memorial day-a priest says a few prayers and performs a blessing as well as everyone bringing flowers for loved ones. It went ok. I'm back home now so all good. Made tea for my mum and uncle(he was married to my mums sister so was there for her) and then came home to my own wee support network:)
Okay.... did some reading and a bit of catching up. Lots of new friends to meet and lots of "old" friends to say hi to!!! Looking forward to the days coming up when I can stay caught up here and not just do these "drive-by" postings!
We are off to a GREAT start with CC's HH, Lisa's QOTD, and Buffy's quotes! I think we are setting ourselves up for a GREAT summer challenge. I'm excited to get back to my fighting weight and fit in my shorts from last May (just a few pounds away!).
Need to wake DD. Surprised she is still sleeping, but not sure how late she stayed up last night. We need to leave here about 11 am again. Rain seems to be holding off for now. TTYL.....................P
QOTD Sunday, June 3, 2012: Do you think tracking food is an important part of weight loss?
* Yes, definitely
* Maybe, it depends on the person
* No, I don't think it's necessary
I'm going to say yes and it depends on the person. I think the older you are the more important the food part is vs the exercise part.
For me, it is a resounding yes!! Pamela taught me that it's the hidden calories that end up biting you in the butt, like the dollop of milk in your tea x 3 in a day. I never realized just how many calories there were in salad dressing, mayo, ketchup, sugar. ETC.
LOL That's funny! I promise it is true too! DH does that a lot lately!
Cry!! It's ok, you don't have to be strong for mum. You can still support her but miss your Dad too.
And don't apologize for it not being weight related. Emotions, feelings, joy, sadness, it's all related. How many of us are emotional eaters?!? Quite a few! I know when Pamela's husband was hurt, she was here a lot to get through the feelings and emotions. When Nancy had her baby, when my DH was traveling so much. We are here to support each other day in and day out. With the good and the bad!
Thanks Buffy. I'm loving your quotes by the way:thumbsup2
Well, funny you mention this. DH and I talked this morning and I said "I think I will do the 1/2 and we'll aim for the 25th anniversary of the full and our anniversary". He came back into the room and said "why can't we do both". I'm like "both what?, the 1/2 and the full?" He said "Both the 20th and the 25th" I was like :confused: and :eek:
Do both go on you definitely can:yay:
So, now I'm not sure what the heck we are doing!!
I have until June 15 to decide because that is when I want to pay for the race.
Good luck with your decision:worship:
super quick - i'm popping in to say that i'm doing the challenge. i will send my weight to sue on friday. just started a new job and my DIS time has been severely cut back. like, to zero :scared1:
have a great rest of your weekend :)
Quote of the day
Eat for the body you want, not the body you have
In going along with the theme of the QOTD, I am going with this quote.
Pamela taught me (she teaches me a lot of stuff!!) that we will never be able to eat like a skinny person, we will always have to eat like we are fat. She did say it more eloquently than I did though! LOL
But it's true. Will won't get to the end of the journey and then eat and be like we were before. This is a lifestyle change, a forever change. It's something we will have to maintain and work at for the rest of our lives. Sounds daunting, but it's worth it if it gives us 20 -30 more years on this earth to be with family, friends and to make a difference in the world.
This is soooooo true. I need to print it and put it on my fridge!
How do you multi-quote in a post?
