Big tarp on Main Street - Is it still there?

I totally agree with peoples right to vent, but I don't agree with broad generalizations and impossible demands. Vent about how unfortunate it was that the timing of ones trip happened in conjunction with a flurry of building issues, vent about bad service, vent about long lines partially caused by Fastpass, vent about bad food (especially considering the price of it), vent about how frustrating it was to have bad weather or a sick child, but be upset because they are doing maintenance when in the same breath talking about how badly the place needs maintenance. Doing so without any real knowledge about how all things happen and why you don't rebuild something everyday just because someday it might need a repair. Going on about a building, still standing, for 500 years when one could only have been alive for 50 years of that and have no idea what was required to keep it standing for the preceding 450 years, does not mean anything. Who knows...it might be that the bakery will still be there 460 years from now. It would probably help if it were made of stone though.

When you add to this the constant complaints over the last few years about how Disney is unwilling to reinvest in the parks and are only concerned about profit and now to listen to the complaints because they are working on it. That causes me to rebel a little...sorry about that.;)

Everybody's opinion is OK with me :goodvibes. I certainly understand your position.

I haven't read the whole thread, but how long is that tarp supposed to be up there?
As fantastically ugly as that is it surely was put up in a hurry for some emergency type of reason, and certainly won't be up for long.

Comparing Magic Kingdom to Magic Kingdom, not whole resort.

I mean, even in the small details Disneyland does a better job.

The weather conditions that the MK is exposed to on an annual basis I would venture to guess has a little something to do with it as well. Southern California is much more forgiving.

YUM. Sounds good. Where is the Tune In Lounge? Is that Prime Time? I heard the Grand Marnier slushes were good. Have to try the Side car staight up! LOL!

thanks! Brunette:goodvibes

Hi! It is in the Prime Time. There's a barely noticeable side door entrace, no reservations needed. DH and I went there last week at 11am and ordered lunch right at the bar. The service is pretty fast at the bar vs. the restaurant I'm guessing to free up barstools sooner. Everything was delicious, especially the booze.

True. Orlando averages 3.5x as much rain (48" vs 13"), plus more humidity and heat.....

As Norm (from this old house) says, "keep water out and away from a building and you will extend its life indefinitely". That is a more difficult task in WDW

With the walkway work in due to start on January 20th and the parade route then being confined to Main Street I'm thinking it should be done by then. If not it's going to be one hell of a squeeze on there every afternoon.

Well, for what it's worth...

but be upset because they are doing maintenance when in the same breath talking about how badly the place needs maintenance.

I don't believe I've EVER commented about WDW badly needing maintenance or being rundown.

It seems to me the "maintenance" issue was only introduced to this thread when people showed up here complaining about the people who were expressing disappointment.... telling all of us not to complain about the place needing maintenance and the maintenance.

Okay, fine by me. I won't complain about the place needing maintenance. I didn't complain about the place needing maintenance.

Now am I allowed to express disappointment in the multiple January refurbs?

Sorry, NDL but yours was not the post that this referred too. And yes you are allowed to express disappointment that your visit coincided with the January refurbs. I think, though, that January refurbs are as common as April showers. That's when the crowds are the lightest and when Disney does most of it's "sprucing up" to be completed before the March influx.

Nope, it was mine and I stand by it. Disney's management HAS changed and not for the better. IMHO . I love Disney and hate seeing, their standards lowered. Some care, but others don't...

All the above debate aside, Main Street is really just so pretty; I love walking down and seeing all the buildings, facades, etc. So it is a bit of a bummer to have some of that covered by tarps, albeit decorated.

On that note, DOES anyone know what they're doing to the Bakery and the Chamber of Commerce buildings and how long the work is supposed to last?

:goodvibes

I've not read the ten pages of posts... but is there a reason that they had to do it this way? Maybe it was something that was unavoidable?

And them doing maintenance is an example of lower standarts?:confused3

I also don't get the whole, "Disney is being cheap" argument when they are spending 1.5 BILLION DOLLARS on re-imagineering a park and the Fantasyland expansion.

I will agree that some things aren't getting cleaned as often as they should, like the white facade to "It's A Small World". You can see the dust piling up on it. Otherwise, with the amount of people that are in the parks daily I think they do a heck of a job keeping up with maintenance.

There have been numerous threads floating about within the last day or so that shows that the decorative cover for the "ugly" box is now either being installed or probably finished. http://likeabolt.tumblr.com/

So, if we all agree that maintenance is necessary and that the big concern is that it had this big ugly brown box covering things...turns out we were all fools...we just thought that stuff went up by snapping ones fingers instead of understanding the process. Silly us! Don't we feel dumb now that we see that the ugly brown box was just the initial structure to hang the decoration on.

All that upset and all for nothing. Who knows maybe there is something to be learned here. For example...maybe we need to understand that we are not part of the planning committee and therefore do not have knowledge of what is needed to create the magic. Or maybe, we need to have a little faith in a group whose primary purpose in life is to make things magical for others, especially in light of the competition down the road. Or maybe that if things don't seem right, they probably aren't. Or maybe that patience isn't a building full of sick people. Or that painting with a board brush stating that all has gone to hell in a hand-basket or that everything is wonderfully perfect is equally inaccurate.

And Avatar. Never saw dust in IASW btw, was probably too excited to pay attention to such minor detail.
There are some issues in Disney, but not everything as bad as some people want to see it and maintenance is a good thing, showing Disney cares, not the other way around.

So now, we are "silly fools", if we expect Disney's standards to remain high? After all, they did set them... We have visited WDW on a regular basis... I used to live in Orlando and still average 1-3 visits per year. I also know, one or two folks, who are in the industry.....30+ years. Make no mistake, the current team's primary purpose in life... is the bottom line. It's more about $$$$ and advertising gimmicks, not magical experiences.
