Hi, I was hopeing someone could explain what pork schnitzel and spatzle is. This looks like a fun place, but I wanted to find out more about the food.

Thanks:confused3

Schnitzel is a thin cutlet of fried meat, usually veal or pork, I've only had veal. It's really good!

Spaetzle (pronounced SHPET-zull) is essentially the same ingredients as noodles. But the shape is much different. They are almost like very small, little yellow balls of noodles. The balls are similar in size to rice, but, of course, rounded.
Some are just boiled -- others, after they are boiled, they are lightly fried with butter. Not sure how Biergarten serves it.
And -- as previous reply said -- German cutlets are slices of meat literally pounded very thin with a wooden mallot. They can be chicken, veal or pork -- usually fried -- and all, very good!

When we visited in June, they had plain spaetzle and a spaetzle casserole. I forgot what it was called, but it was spaetzle baked with swiss cheese, bacon, and onions. Our waitress told us it was a new addition to the buffet. It was really yummy. Even my very picky DD9 enjoyed it.

Since you are in Louisiana, this explanation might help...pork schnitzel is chicken fried steak with pork instead of beef. My understanding is that chicken fried steak has origins in German schnitzel.

Spatzle is similar to pasta - cooked dough.

Enjoy your trip!

I make spatzle (although my family calls them nifflies) all the time. They are pretty easy to make. It is an egg, a cup of flour, a teaspoon of salt, and enough water to make them sticky, but not runny. I usually double or triple the recipe There are a few ways to make them. Very talanted folks can do it by hand. I have what we call a nifflie maker. It looks just like a potatoe ricer, but the holes are a little (but not much) bigger. You just press it into a pot of boiling water. When the dumplings rise to the top of the water they are done. I put butter, salt and pepper on them and keep them warm in the oven. I like them best when covered in gravy! My favorite dinner is fried chicken and nifflies!

schoen - I am coming right over.:cool1: Sounds like what Grandma used to do.

Biergarten does okay with these classic German foods -I was surprised how good the schnitzel was - and the comparision to chicken fried steak was funny - but probably pretty accurate in terms of the crust.

Biergarten's spaetlze was wonderful - but now I am sooo bummed to hear they had some awesome casserole back in June that they apparently tried, but then stopped by our visit last month??? :confused3 So unfair!!!

And plain spatzel tastes like grits - like nothing.
