Biergarten in Germany- Good or Bad ?

We went in December so I am not sure if the atmosphere is always like what we experienced but it was alot of fun. Food was ok but it felt like you were part of a big happy family festival. :lmao: :lmao:

Just to show an example of the Americanization, somehow the wonderful Bavarian dish Allgäuer Käsespätzle turned into the mundane American macaroni and cheese.

funny, but one could serve that same mundane mac & cheese in another country, & it would appear unusual :confused3 lol

i'm curious what Allgäuer Käsespätzle is tho........?
& since you seem to enjoy the more unusual dishes (the main reason for our lack of enjoyment with much german food ~ aside from the incredible potato salad my grandmother used to make :lovestruc ~ is the heaviness. we prefer more delicate, or at the very least unusual, flavorings).........would you mind sharing your favorites?
ty :)

:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

Just what we need - the "ugly American" showing up in a WS restaurant!!

I certainly hope this is what their "escort out" looked like:

:rotfl2:
The funny thing is when they(the suits) "asked them to leave" The big male of the group stands up and starts in with the "make me":scared1:
Security arrived shortly thereafter to make him. And as soon as he saw them - they all left.

We really enjoy Biergarten for the whole atmosphere. The dancing, singing, food, beer, service, it's all great and has been both times we've been. I can't imagine DH letting a trip go by now without a stop here. Of course I'm happy as long as I get spaetzle and hunter sauce.

I suppose that it is like the mac and cheese served at Boma. You will have to ask TLinden16 about our mac and cheese incident there as I am still too traumatized to talk about it publically....
:rolleyes1

I am not a big fan of regular Käsespätzle which is cheese spatzle. Friday was Käsespätzle day at my school and people would cut class and storm the canteen. Not me. But Allgäuer Käsespätzle is a baked dish more like a casserole with real Allgäuer cheese. (Now you have me craving!)

I am a veggie so don't eat a lot of the items at Biergarten, but I like the tomato salad, cucumber salad, spelt salad, all of which are pretty authentic. Plus the roast potatoes, potato salad, roast veggies. The 'pretzel bread' is a reasonable imitation of Laugensemmeln so I like those, and if I recall they have unsalted butter, which I cannot seem to find in the US (I buy butter from Denmark or France in better grocery stores, but can't stand the salted butter served at the table at restaurants)

The desserts are weak, in my mind. But they do make a mean Rüdesheimer Kaffee if you need an 'adult' after dinner drink!

Hope that helps!!

now, all i'll need are opinions on marrakesh, & we're done! lol

We were at Biergarten on Friday night, January 4th, 2008. It was the best meal for our entire trip. The food, entertainment, and atmosphere were all fantastic. We were at Biergarten with friends that had lived in Germany for 7 years. They were expecting to be let down as they lived very near the REAL Biergarten Oktoberfest. They were amazed at the authenticity of the food. Almost everything was completely authentic. (By the way one of the dumplings and some kind of pudding was a little off.) THey said everything else was perfect. Make sure to save room for dessert!

On our last trip to Biergarten in 2002, the food wasn't very good.

I do believe that they had beer in 1 liter steins as late as last week.

The restaurant was very crowded. The only "glitch" was that someone wrote down the wrong buzzer number. We waited and waited. Our friends didn't want to disturb. After about 30 or 40 minutes, I respectfully inquired about our table and received an apology and we were immediately seated.

I think the new dining plan is a sign that the TS meals are improving.

Have been to Epcot well over a dozen times, and this past Dec 30 was our first trip to the Biergarten.
We all loved it. The kids loved to dance and we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere while meeting a new couple and drinking several beers. I had the wine trip sampling and it was great.
We will definitely go again! It was a great way to begin our latest trip.

The next night at Coral Reef (and we have been there before) was a great disappointment. I still can't believe I did not send my steak back. It was so tough and grisly. And my son-in-law finally had to show the CR waitress how to pour beer into a glass. She would just turn the bottle upside down, leaving a glass half full of foam.

Mom2threekids--I'd have to go with Boma, even though I loved Biergarten. Very different--Boma is about the food, Biergarten is a great break and a fun buffet in the middle of Epcot.

That said, I loved our lunch at the Biergarten that day. We were pretty wiped from the previous couple of days, but it was a great little moment of relaxation. They have shandys (there's another German name for them), which is beer and seven-up, which sounds dreadful but is great and addresses the "beer midday at a theme park in florida" problem.

Beachblanket, thanks for that history lesson about the ride plans. The layout did seem kind of odd to me--now I know why!

Cate

(PS: Love the spaetzel!)

Have been considering this.....DH loves his beer (a little too much some might say :rolleyes1 ) but as a veggie I'm wondering if there will be enough for me?

Of course, I could just skip the main meal and go directly to the puddings!

We were there the same night and I know for a fact that they had 1 L steins as we each had one ;). We're from Wisconsin and really enjoy German food, bier and dancing. The entertainment started up just after we ordered our bier and my DD and I polkaed with other families. I have never seen the dance floor so full of people! Mostly kids, mind you but still full.

The place was slammed and very busy. We also waited a long time in line and then for our table. They were OUT of buzzers. The good news was that the food was plentiful and hot and the bier was good. We stuffed ourselves.

I don't recall seeing the spelt salad when we were there. My DD is a vegetarian and it was one of the things she used to eat there. As for the butter, the buffets have gone from bad to worse. I did not see a single container of butter at any of the buffets. They have all changed to margarine .

We love it! We actually decided to switch our ADR in May from Les Chefs to Biergarten (we've eaten at both) and DH and I are really looking forward to it. We love the atmosphere, food, music and meeting new people. :)

Love the Biergarten, and have only been at a table with unfriendly people once.

You are seated at a table for 8--even if there are four of you--so its time to make new friends. (That's what they do in Germany!) Have always had Renata as our server, who has been there since the early 1990's, LOL. She even remembers us.

I find the Biergarten to be more basic food for meat and potatoes, and a little weak on desserts (for example the Crystal Palace has much better desserts) but after a week of Disney dining sometimes its just to sit down to roast chicken or pork, soup and salads with no strange sauces. They also have the same Pretzel bread as they serve in LeCellier, but in a different shape. Last time I went they had the best Potato Leek soup I've ever eaten--not too "leek-y" which gets oniony. I was in soup heaven, and it wasn't loaded with sodium either. (At least I could get my rings on and off so I know the soup was not really salty.)

Not for everyone--it gets loud and you are seated with strangers--but its a hit for us and the kids ask to go. Took me a while to get in there as the smell of sauerkraut tends to hit you at the door. But that's more from the Sommerfest brat stand than the Biergarten.

And I read above about the Spelt Salad: It was GONE for my May visit. I was terribly disappointed as I loved that stuff. Maybe it will be back.

Well that IS disappointing!! I remember reading that Chefs de France may have stopped serving unsalted butter as well..... maybe I will just need to bring my own small packets of President butter along!

I hope you don't visit in the summer! Melted butter everywhere! The regular sit-down places appear to still have butter. I *think* Narcoossee's may have had unsalted butter.

Wow! I see you on the DIS all the time, and we were at Biergarten on the same night! Wow!

We got to Biergarten at 5:15 for a 5:25 and was seated about 5:50. (We had buzzer 71, and they kept buzzing 21) Anyway, we were seated in the middle section next to the water wheel on the right side. There were 9 of us at a table, (6 adults and 3 kids). One of the guys was 6'7" and thin and another one was 5'3" and pooh sized (my dh). I guess the other guy was average.

There were a lot of kids dancing that night! We had a great time.

We thought it was great and loads of fun for DGS who was 6. They had a show. We tried the many beers too. Food is a buffet with something everyone liked

We were about 2 hours behind you at 7:00 pm and we ended up missing the start of IllumiNations. Luckily, we had already seen it twice :).
