I wrote in a few weeks ago about a green dot card my DH got in the mail--we never ordered one or do we want one--theres a sticker on it to call a # to accitvate it --I tried calling just to ell them we never ordered the card

I could never get a hold of anyone one to talk to--all they kept saying was enter the last 4 #s of you SS#

which I was not about to do!!!

I talked to my DD the other day who is a police officer and she said they've been getting complaints about this scam--whoever is sending out these cards has you call this # and once you call and put in the # I guess the person can get all sorts of info I don't know how since they only ask for the last 4

I just thought Id get the word out about this

please be careful--
has anyone else heard of this

I have a Green Dot that I use for my dd to do online purchases with her cash. You need your SS# to sign up for the card so if your dh got one in his name it means someone signed up with his or another person's SS#.

Great. We got one of these several months ago, in DH's name. I knew we hadn't applied to open any cards, and as I was pretty sure that it's illegal for companies to open accounts for you (they used to be able to do this), I cut the card up and threw it in the trash. I figured it was some stupid advertising campaign and didn't investigate. However… several months ago we learned from the State board of revenue that someone had filed a fraudulent tax return in our names. I haven't filed our taxes yet, so couldn't figure out how they'd already know this, but the State said that the return had been electronically filed, and as we have always filed paper, the return was automatically flagged for checking (NOT because it was electronic, but because we'd never filed electronically before). ANYHOW… I have been reading that GreenDot is the company that TurboTax has been sending out refunds through, and they have been caught up in all the fraudulent tax return stuff. I wonder if our getting this card is at all related to the fraudulent tax return filed in our name. HOPEFULLY by cutting up the card (instead of responding) I kept the bad guys from getting whatever cash they were anticipating. I sure hope so… JERKS have made my life overly-complicated, so if I messed with their scam, GOOD!!

Thank you foor letting us know about this. I received a 'gift card' for $567 with instructions to call about how to use it.

I googled it instead and found that it was something I'm not interested in getting caught up in.

I think what a pp meant was that if you get one of these scam cards, you are already caught in it... at least partially, and it's time to place a fraud alert on all 3 credit bureaus now. and call your cc companies and let them know, and your bank, etc.they must have some partial info at least to get it to you at all.
