to be inducted. You have to be in the top 10% to be invited. It appears legit (unlike the people to people vacations my kids are always getting letters for). She will get an extra cord for graduation.

It's something extra she can put on her resume, at least. It appears to be the equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa.

My son has received several of those pay to join honor societies at his university that he did not apply for. We have recycled them as soon as they come in.

The only honor societies that we are interested in are the ones that he actually has to apply for.

Seems about like people to people to me :)

I've received others in the past. This one comes directly from her very large business school, she needs to respond to an online invitation that will be emailed to her within 2 weeks, attend a mandatory meeting next month, and there is a 2 hour induction banquet in the spring (free for her, $25 pp for guests). I googled it, like I've done many others, and most seem to think it's legit. She is in the top 10% (received an award at a ceremony at her university last year).

ETA, its listed on her school's website under honor societies, has an advisor, says it's by invitation only. She attends the #1 public business school in our region.

It's legit. Not terribly exclusive (like you said, top 10% of undergrad business students qualify), but yeah, something to add to a resume.

FWIW, most of the nations oldest and most reputable honor societies -- like Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi -- are things you are invited to, not apply for. The chapter at the school typically looks at the student records and selects those who have demonstrated academic ability overall and in their major. You usually have to be a junior or senior to be invited.

If there is a chapter at the school and he was invited to join by that chapter, that's usually a solid sign it's legitimate. Those fake/$$ organizations do not have faculty representation at schools.

Thanks everyone, looks worth the $75 one time fee. It started in 1913, and has 7 student board members on her campus. It appears they select the students invited objectively.

It's a shame that he has missed out on some very nice opportunities. Honor societies associated with a college or university invite students to join based on academic merit, leadership, and/or service. They are nothing like People to People.

And to the OP, congratulations to your son!

Thanks but it's my daughter! My ds18 is at a different school, but isn't at focused as his sister.
