I think the best advice I've read is to:
1) Make sure it's something that's comfortable for you BEFORE you leave.
2) Pack at least two completely different kinds of shoes in case what you were planning to wear does end up giving you blisters/discomfort.
Personally, I only find Crocs comfortable for long distances if I'm wearing socks. In the summer, since we come back to the hotel for a mid-day nap, I wear my tennis shoes for half the day and various sandals for the other half of the day.
