Best place to sit to stay somewhat dry on splash mountain?

It's called "Splash Mountain", not "Stay nice and dry Mountain" You're on vacation, get wet, it's ok.

they told us the last row, on the left is the driest. My dd wanted to go on it so bad but then saw it in person and was afraid of getting wet.. ( plus we took her on atlantis in Seaworld and it scared it. we barely got wet in the last row...

First, watch a few boats as they land. Last time we were there in August, they had set it so everyone got soaked on every landing. There were no dry seats. I had ridden Splash Mountain many times in the past and only gotten splashed, not soaked. It was the first time I realized that they could set the ride to soak or not to soak.
In January I suspect that they won't have all the sprayers going since it won't be that hot out. But watch a few people land first and you'll get a pretty good idea of what will happen with your boat.

The Imagineers have the ability to raise and lower the water levels in the ride. During the hotter summer months, the water level is raised so that a larger splash is made. In the winter, the water level is lowered so that the splash is less. The last thing Disney wants is for people to leave the park wet and cold when they can stay and spend money and only be a little damp.

I have never gotten "soaked" from the splash after the big hill. I have gotten soaked by the "Splash cannon". To clarify the splash cannon whjich has been mentioned before. When a log comes down the hill, a cannon shoots water to the sides of the hill to simulate the splash of the log just as the log goes under the tunnel. One of the cannons is aimed to the left of the hill (when looking at the hill). In the path of this cannon is the approach to an uphill climb that the log goes up early in the ride. If the timing is right (or wrong) your log may get hit by this cannon splash, which will get you soaked.

It's very amusing to watch people on the ride get hit by this splash when they aren't expecting it. Usually one person gets soaked and their log mates laugh at them as they go up the hill.

Aw, it's SPLASH Mountain, why would you want to stay dry?!?!? :rotfl:

Well, my nieces, 7, 10 and 12 year old 20+ time veterans of WDW told my mom and dad to be sure to sit in the front row so they wouldn't get wet. You'd think we'd have learned not to listen to them by now... From looking at a few photos of the aftermath, I'd suggest left side, second or third row so you can duck behind the poor suckers in the front row!

I would definitely say the front is the most likely to get soaked. Probably the last TEN times I've ridden it (at both WDW and DL), I've been stuck in the very front and have been completely soaked. Not just splashed or wet. SOAKED.

Or let me rephrase that, the last ten times I didn't wear a poncho. It's not poncho-city for me!

This thread is very interesting! I'm working up the courage to do it for the first time in all my trips when I go this January and am trying to decide where to sit and what to wear to be prepared!

I'm sorry to say that Splash Mountain is going to be closed for rehab January 4-17, so you may not get a chance to ride it this trip either.:sad1:

That would be from the bench across from SM:rotfl2:!,I have gotten soaked from every seat, trust me I have try!. If its not from the the big drop, its from the water that squirts up when you start your way up from the out side.:goodvibes

i dont think you can help getting wet.
When we went in April, we sat in the 3rd row, while the boat was waiting to go up the first ramp/travelator, we got drenched - either from the water cannon (which fires every 3rd? drop) or from water displacement from when another boat hit the water after the big drop. the back 2 rows were worst hit, and it came stright down on top of us; so our laps were also soaked. this was before we even got anywhere nr the drop. it happened again when we rode a second time. third time the boat in front got it.
As with any water ride, you need to be prepared to get a little wet - and possibly drenched:goodvibes

We'll be visiting the 3rd week of January, which has potential to be a bit chilly. Hubby wants to ride Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids, but I don't want to be wet and cold or walking around in wet shoes getting blisters. I bought ponchos for all of us. What would you do?

Usually the back of SM is not very wet. Kali you never know how wet you will get. My 3 yo got the wet seat in October- the kid was soaked! It was warm out but I brought him a change of socks. I skip both these rides f its a little cool out or at night.

On our last trip we decided to ride SM right before heading over to Chef Mickey's for dinner. I have to disagree with everyone who suggests the back row - I was sitting in the back left seat and got the wettest out of everyone on the boat (but my 5 year old dd was sitting in the right seat).

CM is awfully cold when you are soaking wet. Mickey did get a little laugh looking at me though.

I've gotten the least wet when I sit in the front. But when you first leave the loading place the turn where you pass the drop is deadly. I've gotten soaked from the right almost every time I've been on the ride. That is a soaking you cannot avoid if you're in it's path.

In front and just duck when the big splash comes!:lmao:

I thought I heard somewhere that they set a new height limit of 5' minimum for the front row because kids were "ducking" and getting too far into the log risking injury. I thought it was interesting because as a fully grown but petite woman, I am under 5' and wouldn't make the bar!:rotfl:

To avoid a big splash on the main drop, sitting in the back row is best. The heavier the front of the boat is, the bigger the wave that's created. You can't predict where the water cannon's spray will fall, though, so it's possible to get wet anywhere. I've gone through many times in the back barely getting a few drops on me, and a few times completely drenched by the cannon. If it's cold out though, they usually have the cannon turned down.

I believe that was at Disneyland. The logs at their version of Splash Mountain are different than those at WDW.
