Does anyone know the best place to sell something like this. Cleaning out closets (inherited) and found a vintage fox fur coat and a mink stoll. (wrap).
We don't want or need them. At least 40 years old.
Thanks.
As a real answer, if they've been hanging in your closet for 40 years with no cleaning or conditioning, they are probably worthless. I would donate them as blankets to an animal shelter.
Copying and pasting my two posts from your other thread:
I have worked in the vintage clothing industry for nearly 20 years. I agree that with the above poster that most vintage furs aren't as valuable as many people think. It is very important to know what kind of fur it is and have a good idea about the condition. As with everything else, condition is key, but this goes double with furs. The smallest tear or sign of stiffness and I won't go anywhere near it.
FWIW - the last two mink stoles in wonderful condition I had I brought to a couple of well attended vintage clothing shows marked $65 and they didn't move. This fall, I priced 'em at $35 just to get rid of them (and I did). Other dealers were questioning my prices, but I just didn't want to carry them around or store them any more.
Also be absolutely 1000% sure you know what the fur is. I see stuff mis-marked constantly; fox marked as rabbit, ermine as rabbit, squirrel marked as mink (lots of furs are treated to look like mink). There are some furs that are worth a ton; on the flipside, there are some that are "worth" a ton that are illegal to sell. The Vintage Fashion Guild's website has a handy fur identification resource.
I'm outside of Superior / Duluth. These are a family member's. She asked me if I wanted to try and sell them. They were her Mom's. They look to be in fabulous shape to me. The coat is still in the cover from Reckmeyer's Furriers out of Milwaukee.
I think I will just give them back to her and she can decide what she wants to do. I will suggest that she find a Furrier of some sort and get them looked at and see what they are and what kind of shape they are in.
Thanks for the help. Way over my head of knowledge!
