I need to get someone to come out and control the weeds in my yard so it will look beautiful again. What is the best lawn care service?

Also do you know how much it would usually run for a year . My yard is small. I would say less than a 1/4 acre. I live in Northern VA you dont get big yards unless you pay big bucks..

Thanks in advance

Don't have a suggestion, but since I live in NOVA as well, I'm interested to see what the suggestions are.

We live in Illinois and my dad mows grass/landscapes for others. Prices range anywhere from 30-80 depending on the size of the yard and if he has to bag the grass or trim around flower beds/yard statues. I would get estimates from several different companies/peoples because they can fluxuate widly and pick the estimate that's best for you, not neccessarily the cheapest or highest price. It may also cost for extras; trimming, spraying for weeds...so make sure you ask each person that you get an estimate from about the extra charges.

To the OP - your original message is a bit unclear - are you looking for someone to come in and fertilize and do a weed-killing application - OR - are you looking for someone to actually do the mowing, weeding etc.

Who are your neighbors using? We found a name for someone to do the fertilizing and weed-killing stuff in a local newspaper. We really like him, and have had him for about 3 years. One of our nieghbors liked the job he did at our house, and they started using him too.

Good Luck!

Ask your neighbors. We have a smaller company than (TruGreen or Leisure Lawn) and pay $100 a treatment for 1.5 acres. TruGreen wanted $160.

I agree - ask your neighbors that have nice lawns! They may receive a referall bonus as well. We have 2 acres (1+ is lawn) and use Lawn Doctor. We have what I call the Platinum Plan....it's year-round everything (fertilizing, weed control, lime, grub control, etc. - not mowing) and it's $4K a year. Cha-ching but DH is adamant about having a nice lawn!

I guess I should have been clearer. We mow our own yard. I was looking for someone to basically do all the fertilizing and get rid of our weeds so we would have a better looking grass. I have lots of dandelion and those things you blow and the white things float in the air which just spreads those weeds.
I would do it but really dont care to and dont know anything about it. I would say my yard is around 5000 square feet.

I moved here in August and I haven't seen anyone having someone do their yard..

You need a quarterly company that comes out like Chem Lawn or the other ones mentioned. Another option is to get the Scott's fertilizer series during the year and put it down yourself. That's what we do: pre-emergent in Jan. or Feb. (this keeps the crab grass from coming out), a weed and feed in the summer, and another one in late fall that promotes root growth over the winter for a healthy lawn.

PS. Doing it yourself is super easy. Just buy a drop spreader (around $30.), the bag of Scott's, follow the setting on the bag, and walk in straight lines across your lawn.

Another tip: don't cut your grass too short each week. Longer grass is healthier and better able to withstand weeds and drought.

I wouldn't do any company that did a liquid fertilizer. We had one of the "big names" do our lawn one year. And they sprayed the fertilizer on when it was pouring outside. I just felt like that was a HUGE waste of money for that particular application. And - they kept trying to "upsell" us all summer long, which annoyed me to no end.

I agree with the poster who said do it yourself with Scotts. It is so easy and cheap to do it yourself and Scotts has really made it soo very easy. Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy the bag for 5000 square feet. I just bought the one for spring for about $20.00 DH put it in the spreader on the setting the directions told him to use and he just walked the yard. Easy Peasy.

We have just over 2 acres, and do it ourselves. Actually, I do it...DH works crazy hours. We only put down the pre-emergent in March or so and the winterizer in November. I only use Scotts....bought the cheap stuff at WalMart and regretted it. Also, don't expect overnight results. It might take a season or two to see results. Looking at the lawns in our neighborhood this week, the ones with the "professionals" have more dandylions than I do!
