I am looking for a compact and lightweight camera for around 200. We have a very expensive one but it is heavy, big and bulky. Looking for one that fits in your pocket, but takes great pictures. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks Laura

P.S. Any examples would be a bonus!

I bought a Sony Cyber-shot for Disney. I am partial to Sony cameras. I love the pics it takes & you can take video as well.

I bring my laptop with me so I can download the pics I take during the day & start off with a fresh memory stick. Not that I could fill a 2GB stick in one day but you never know. :confused3

The camera is small enough that it fits in my fanny pack~yes I am a fanny pack geek on vacation.

Here are some of the pics I took with it....

Good luck with your decision...

The pics at night are great... The one of the cat was taken in the dark believe it or not....

Canon SD1200 is $199.99 and it is the best rated by Consumer Reports. I cheaped out and got the Canon A1000 which has been replaced by the A1100, and I really like it, but still wish I would have gone for the SD1200. We have one at work and it takes AMAZING pictures.

I have a big dslr too. I then won a sony cyber-shot. It's just the 8mp one. I didn't think i'd use it much but then I got it out recently for a trip away and i LOVE it! It is so easy to slip in your pocket and takes great pictures. The best thing is there doesn't seem to be the shutter delay that I found on a previous canon powershot. If you're used to dslr then that's a real bonus:) Also it's the one with the slide down panel at front. It turns on as soon as you slide it which means it's very quick to get those quick shots. My version definitely comes in under $200. Only annoyance is that it's a memory stick. Just my thoughts.:)

I would suggest the Olympus waterproof camera. I have a Sony Cybershot as well as a large camera and my inlaws have the little Olympus waterproof camera & we are forever borrowing it. It takes pics just as good as our cyber shot plus it's waterproof & you never need to worry about leaving it in your pocket at the waterparks etc...
Look into it. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.

Thank you everybody, we are going to look at all of them tomorrow. I appreciate all of the advice.

I'm a big camera addict and I love my baby Samsung D860. It surprised me because I am a big believer that companies should stick to what they know (ie Kodak for cameras, sony for music etc) but it is small enough to fit in my pocket. It is about a year old now but Best Buy has the newer models for $130-$200 which in my opinion is super bargainous!

I too am into cameras, I have very high end stuff and stuff I can beat up and not feel too bad.

When I go to Disney I bring several cameras, but the one I use the most is the least expensive. It is very light weight and the pics are great. It is the Dexter 850 with the high intensity lens and the shakel movement feature. It has a quadapopic stability inside that washes out blue and white shades within a remer cloud (which happens a lot in August) because the heat and the sun.

You will never get light shades or washed out murkiness with this camera. It does cost a tad bit more then $200, but not much more. In fact I also own (believe it or not) the Dexter 5200 (which cost $10,500) and in some instances I like the 850 better. Maybe becuase I don't have to worry about banging it around.

I probably own over $100,000 worth of camera equipment and it is all Dexter. I just find them to be the best camera ever made.

I live in NYC and the store I buy my equipment at sells nothing but Dexter. Their cheapest camera is the 850 and their most expensive is the 7200 which you can buy used for about $35,000 or new for about $50,000.

I have a Canon SX110 & LOVE LOVE LOVE IT - but I don't think its under 200 - but I also LOVE the "A" series Canon makes - not sure the model right now - it changes every year - but I've had 2 of them &they are also FABULOUS cameras & super user friendly.

CAn you tell I like Canon? My bro, mom, MIL & I all have Canons - several different lines....

Gosh I'm out of it! LOL I've never ever heard of the brand Dexter - even the photographers I know of don't use the brand - guess they can't afford it LOL - they'd never make any money 'cause of how much they'd have to charge their customers to pay off a $35k camera! LOL I can't imagine what the lenses would cost to add to that booger! WOW!

I can't find the Dexter website? are they made by someone else? cause nothing comes up when I search for it?

Yes. It is very rare you will see a pro using it because of the cost. It is almost like a private club. You can not search for Dexter because the company that makes the camera goes under a different name that produces different parts of the camera in Germany, Lundesberg, Italy near Malivia and in France they are called Lefèvre.

I was introduced to the Camera by my grandfather who tried to play down the mystery of owning a Dexter. Well after all these years, I don't think it is such a holy grail any longer and would talk about the camera to people who were interested. However, most people don't look further into finding out about them becuase of their price. I think the price is what it is to make it very exclusive.

The main component in Dexter is made by Haustiernamen in Germany, however to track the camera in it's whole form is close to impossible.

Kind of like a Stradivarius.

It is a great hobby, that has cost me a marriage and one year it almost cost me my sanity. I will probably die never fully grasping the meaning of the camera.

LOVE my Canon A1100 IS. Nice and small, great pix. 2 AA batteries.
