Best book you

The best book I've ever read is The Help. Love it and haven't been able to find anything that compares! But thanks to all these book threads I've got a pretty good list going.

I also loved The Lovely Bones and To Kill a Mockingbird. For light quick reads I do enjoy the Stephanie Plum books (Janet Evanovich).

I just got a Kindle for my birthday and have my wish list going! First on my list....The Book Thief. It's been mentioned more than any other.

Will read through the suggestions since I'd love to find a good book that I haven't heard of.

Like others, I can't really narrow it down to one book because I read all different types of books.

For non-fiction I love the book Glass Castle....an amazing story about a woman's not-so-great life, but incredible how positive she is and how uplifting the message turned out to be. After reading it I heard her speak and was moved to tears and felt warm and fuzzy at the same time.

I love the book The Alchemist....very thought-provoking.

Those are the 2 off the top of my head. I enjoyed the Hunger Games series, but more of a quick, fluff-type read. They were fun.

A great thread ... rare that I read through all pages but totally enjoyed doing so just now. I loved that there were three shouts outs for "Ender's Game"!

Anything by John Irving (Prayer for Owne Meany was his best, loved it)

Anything by Stephen King (11/22/63 and The Stand are his BEST, The Shining is pretty awesome too, forget the movie, the book will scare the pants off you !!)

Anything by Anne Rice (her Vampire and Witch series are mesmerizing)

The Skystone Series by Jack Whyte - highly recommended, 9 books long but as soon as I put one down I would immediately start the next one. Positively addictive.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts (This book stayed with me for a long time, great story.)

For pure silliness I just finished "Let's Pretend This Never Happened" by Jenny Lawson. A real fun ride, laugh out loud absurdity.

My favorite mystery authors are Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, and Dorothy Sayers. My favorite mystery novel is Agatha Christie's "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd".

I used to really love Stephen King's horror novels when I was younger, and I still consider him to be a great writer, although my tastes have changed to some extent. My favorite was The Stand, as others have mentioned. I also used to like the horror novels of Peter Straub and Ramsey Campbell (Incarnate was one of my favorites).

I couldn't stop reading it and I must have re-read it four times since then.

Interesting two people I saw named Charm School. I loved that when I read it as a kid and have read it since.

Also The Stand love interests me, as I found that beyond even regular King-level tedium. Hate.

How many people here also look at other people's books when they're in a new person's house?

You know, a bookcase full of King says something different to me than a bookcase full of Anne Tyler or Palahnuk or ... etc. I always find peoples' book collections interesting - I think they tell more about a person than most other things.

Funny this. If you looked at my two full bookcases, you'd think I was really into British Royal History, Classics, and Stephen King/Clive Barker. And Sci-Fi.

My tastes have changed incredibly since I was younger, but when I got my Kindle, I got rid of most of my paperbacks and only kept the really good autographed hardcovers.

To see the real current me, one would have to peek into my Kindle.

I'd have to say Mists of Avalon -- read it decades ago and I probably should re-read it at some point.

I'm "traveling" with George R. R. Martin right now, working through Book 3 of the Fire & Ice series and loving them.

I was doing the same thing. Well I bought one and put a bunch on my wish list to come back for when I'm finished with the ones I already have sitting waiting to be read.

My favorite book would probably have to be Pillars of the Earth.
