Bereavement...am I thinking unreasonably?

I am sorry for your loss.

I work at a small family owned insurance agency. We get no time off for the death of a family member. One of the woman had worked here for more than 25 years when he husband past away. She had to take vacation time.

I understand your husband's is different, he cant even take time off without worrying about his job. This is so unfair and unfeeling.

I work for a government contract company too. Even as cruddy as the health benefits are, this company at least gives us 3 days of paid bereavement leave.

My dh's company is like that. He has to switch with someone or call off and be written up.. Even when we had our kids TG we had them c-section and scheduled so he could be there because they would not allow him ANY time off..

Give BD hugs from me will ya..
I will...as soon as I dare to get close enough. (he's dealing with the aunts right now  )

I just want to point out that that observation was made totally without any input from me!

I've heard people ......not me of course...... refer to them as the GOOBERment!

Ah come on, think how nice he'd look sitting in the company chair!

Nice try!

Oh....I forgot about the chair....guess I should go dust it off!;)

I feel for ya...the contract work has many pros and cons.

Kelly, it is ridiculous that they won't let him have at least two days off.

Make sure you tell your work that it is YOUR grandfather. My Mema died in October, same deal, got a phone call saying she wouldn't last the night. I rushed right over to be with her, DH called out of work and told them what was going on. They told him to take his three days and then when he came back they said "Oh, since it was your wife's grandmother, we deducted it from your vacation time" :headache:

Sorry for what you all are going through

That is crazy! I can't believe they don't give any time off paid or unpaid. I don't think I've ever worked for a company that doesn't give time off.
I'm sorry to hear about DH's grandfather. You know how to get a hold of me.

Thanks becky...I already took care of that. My ASM put the Goober in for me already.

even regular government employees don't all get bereavement leave. dh's former did-3 days paid. mine did'nt-you could use sick leave if you had any, any other accruals if you had them-but if not it was straight absent without pay.

i also work for a gov contractor-and my father passed away just after the beginning of the year-i was out of work almost 5 weeks with his illness and passing- was charged one week of vacation time-partly because of the timing and partly because we have a more generous leave and flex time policy in my area of work. but I dont understand getting written up if you are out more than one day-even if its not paid bereavement-if he lets them know he will be out they should only charge vacation days.

Who does he work for? Time to find a new job.

he's a contract worker for the government....and nope...no sick time, personal time or bereavement.

I hope he's getting good pay, otherwise he should move on to a job and an employer who cares about their employees just a little.

Sorry for your loss.

And yes it stinks that they are threatening him with being written up. He really needs to talk to HR about this. Some supervisors don't know the policy

When dh died, I was not given any paid time off. He passed on a Saturday and I was at work on that Monday. I took two half days and was not paid for the time
