Okay, I'm in serious pain here. I bent over this morning to pick something up off the floor, not quickly or anything, and heard a small "pop". Now it's extremely painful on right side, in the upper buttock/low back area. It just hurts in general, but when I try to walk around, it gets so bad I can't even move...then it'll subside enough for me to continue, but it gets bad very frequently.

We're in the middle of getting ready for the packers to come pack our stuff Monday, so very busy, and this has limited me to what I can do now.

Any idea what could have happened? it all seemed so innocent...pick up the dog's bone so nobody would step on it and hurt themselves!LOL

I'm not a doctor...you might want to see one...but it sounds like you may have herniated a disk.

try using a heating pad on your lower back, it should help.

Maybe you herniated a disc? Go see a doctor for an evaluation.

Hope you feel better soon.

So sorry you hurt your self, but when I saw the title of this thread it made me laugh! In my family we say pop instead of fart. so I read I bent down and heard a little "POP" :rotfl:

Sounds like you've either knocked your back out of alignment, which is causing pressure on the nerves leading into your butt and leg. The other option is a herniated disc, as others have posted, which can cause the same problems you're experiencing.

IMO, go to the doctor as soon as you can. I'm dealing with the same issue right now. I was finally diagnosed with 2 herniated discs and spinal stenosis after seeing 4 doctors over the course of 7 months. I'm having surgery on Wednesday...finally. For what it's worth...I herniated mine by turning over in my sleep. :earseek:

I hope your body heals itself quickly. :grouphug: to you!

I wouldn't be asking what it is on the DIS - I would either go to the ER or have called my doctor already. You should not play around with it another day.

I ruptured 2 discsabout 2 weeks ago and also have spinal stenosis. I just had an epidural cortisone injection and boy what a relief. I thought I would never walk again. It is only a temperary fix but it will get me through the next couple of months (making plans for DD wedding) :flower:

I threw a pillow onto my kids bed two weeks ago and pulled a ligament in my shoulder. How sorry is that?

I hope you feel better soon.

I actually ruptured my disc just bending over. Ice packs for 15 mins are your best bet. ice reduces swelling...heat isn't as good. At least this is what the Dr said. I find it to be true.

The disc bulges out and causes swelling and that puts pressure on your sciatic nerve. Take advil and use the ice pack. You want to reduce the swelling in the area. If not better in a couple days then go to Dr, but there is not much you can do for this injury but let it heal.

its when it doesn't heal that you end up getting epidurals (like me) or surgery.
;)

If it is a herniated disk the chiropractor can put the bones back in alignment on either side of it. However, the disk itself will have to respond to muscle relaxers, icepaks, etc. Usually the orthopedist(or even regular doctor, I have had one be able to diagnose it before) then has to help you, especially if you need medications. The first time it 'pops' out can be EXTREMELY painful!
Good luck, I know it must be a real pain while moving....Ewwwww!

OM mY goodness.. I could of written this post...About 1 1/2 months ago I was bending down picking up some towels. I mean come on,I do this everyday. And, I heard that "pop"... it hurt so bad, I was in pain. I was ok to walk. But, if I sat too long it would hurt badly..I moved slowly and carefully. I took advil and rested alot. Its hard though, I have 3 kids, and my youngest is only 10 months old. I dont like going to the dr. I said if there was no improvement the next day I would. It took about 6 days total, and everyday it got better and better. At the one week mark, I had forgot I hurt my back.
Then the next week, I was putting groceries away. My 6 yr old was sitting at the kitchen table eating lunch, the baby was in the highchair eating lunch. I opened the fridge, to put some stuff on the bottom shelf and OUCHIE : I hurt it again, the pain was worse. I dont do pain well, Im just a big baby. Well it hurt so bad I almost passed out, my head started spinning, I saw stars LOL, The room started going black.. I was scared because of my 2 kids. I sat down on a chair told my 6 yr old to get me a cold wet washcloth. After a couple of minutes I Was seeing fine. I called my husband at work and he came home. I did "consider" going to the dr...I said if I felt this bad the next day I would.. The same thing happened. I rested, didnt bend, had my husband lift the baby in and out of crib when he was around.. and 5-6 days I was ok.
It hurt the worst when I sat in one postion too long.
Now when I bend too much I can still feel a little pulling. Im careful how I bend and such.
Im much more aware of it. I guess I should of went to the dr. I had a friends husband who went to the dr because of this exact same thing. They gave him muscle relaxers and pain meds. I cant take either one due to me having a baby at home who needs my care. That stuff makes me way too tired. So I was taking Advil and it helped.
If it happens again, I will again "consider" going to the dr.

Thanks so much everyone!!!I really do appreciate your input.

krdisneybound---in no way was I coming to the DIS baords in place of a doctor. I was just trying to find out if anyone had the same thing happen and what it could be!! Just like so many others do about so many different things.

Well, it hasn't gotten any better. In fact, I went to get up in the night to use the bathroom, and couldn't even stand. It was BAD...couldn't straighten up, couldn't roll over, nothing. I ended up putting the heating pad on it and popping some ibuprofen, which has made it about as sore was it was yesterday...which I guess is an improvement from what it was.

If it doesn't get better soon, I'm going to have to go to a doctor. This has happened at a very nasty time. I'm supposed to be steam cleaning rugs and furniture today.

Your back is not going to get better without professional help and it's not something to take lightly. You do not need to be steam cleaning rugs and furniture. GO TO THE DOCTOR and stop being an idiot about it.

I know I sound harsh, but I have back problems and so does my BF. He won't go with his back until he's writhing on the floor in pain and he makes me and himself more miserable by doing so. :confused3 I, on the other hand, will go to the Dr. and my back heals much more quickly than his ever does.

My DBF threw his back out bending over to put on his underwear...

Definitely go to the doctor ASAP.

Me too, me too!

I hurt my back 8 years ago leaning over to pick up a baby. It popped - the room went black, I got hot and nauseated and almost passed out.

Now it just goes out whenever. Like the day I bent down to wipe the baby's nose. Or the day I put the baby on the changing table at just the wrong angle.

I have been hobbling around for 11 days with the most current episode. I take 800 mg. ibuprofen every 6 hours, use the heating pad, and try not to lift anything.

Every time I hurt it I think MAYBE this will be the time I go to someone OTHER than my internist. I think maybe a chiropractor, maybe an orthopedic specialist. I even think maybe acupuncture. But then again, maybe not! ;)

You need to see your dr or find a good chiropractor (a good one won't touch you if he can't help you, he'll send you to your dr). Until you see someone, I'd go with ice over heat. Ice reduces the swelling (everything is swelling up to protect the injured area). When you are healed is the time for the heat, which will reduce the stiffness and provide comfort. Avoid bending forward, that puts a lot of stress on your spine.

Important: When you feel better, don't over do it! You'll just end up back where you started. Ask your dr for exercises and do them faithfully to build up the muscles you need to support your back. That's where I ran into trouble. I let myself get out of shape and my back is paying the price. Good luck, hope you heal soon! :flower:
