Does anyone have an opinion/info on the positives and negatives of owning points at two seperate resorts? We are thinking of buying more points but are not sure weather to add on to our existing (SSR) or buy somewhere else.

Thanks

Do you want to book 11 months out some place else? Or do you just want to stay at SSR and take your chances at 7 months for another resort?

Really that is the only reason. The issue is if you buy 25pts at BLT you can only book 11months out for 25 pts. It's not like all your points are home resort at both resorts. So if you are getting the points for home resort booking you need enough that you can at least bank/borrow enough for an 11 month stay.

Interesting question. It really depends on your vacation habits now and in the future.

One of the main reasons we bought into DVC is to have a big family vacation every 3 years. This will probably be using 1 2-bedroom and 2 studios, for at least 1 week, maybe a few days more. All of our points are at the same resort so I can be sure we can all stay in the same place. If my points were split between resorts, there is a possibility I could not reserve everybody together.

On the other hand, it sure would be nice to have some points at a different resort on property which has a completely different feel than our home resort.

Good luck with your decision.

We were faced with the same question. SSR on resale for $70, or BLT for $107... We picked BLT and got a 50pt and 75pt contract. I'm thinking the location, fewer rooms, and longer contract will leave us better off in the next 10-15 years. They are now only selling BLT in contracts of 100 or more, so I think these smaller one will be worth more in resale. And the 125 gives us a max of 375 for 11 month window. Also lower MF's at BLT.

As noted, there are several factors. IMO, it depends on why you want 2 resorts, how many points you will own and how you will use them. I think it makes sense to own multiple resorts if you want the home resort priority at those resorts and own enough points to make that a workable approach. I think it can also make sense to own multiple resorts if some of the ownerships are where you want to say and some of the points are used as a reserve account such as SSR or OKW where you could add points cheaper (VB and HH are not great choices for this approach).

I agree with what has been said. For example, all of our points are at AKV. And we love it. We do, however like to get a food and wine trip in each year. We would love to stay at BWV for that trip, but that would be nearly impossible to get. So an 80 pt add on there someday would make sense for us.

We own at two resorts, but the points at each are for different trips. We wanted home resort advantage at BLT, and will probably not try to combine points at 7 months. The SSR points are for the longer spring/summer trip and we are ok it SSR or OKW are our only options as we love them both.

We own at BWV for F&W in October, at AKV for spring vacation and at VWL for December vacation. I can book at 11 months and not have to worry about trying to switch at 7 months to stay where I want.

Own where you want to stay.

When we were in the planning stage of buying, and on here asking a lot of questions, someone said that they split their points--and that's what we ended up doing. We have 150 at AKV and 150 at SSR. By banking and borrowing each year we can plan our vacation 11 months out, and just flip back and forth between the 2 resorts--last year it was AKV, this year THV. We love them both, and haven't been disappointed.

But if you know you won't be happy unless you're at a certain resort, then it makes sense to buy all your points there so that you've got a better chance with your reservations 11 months out.

One of the reasons I prefer 2 "homes" is that on longer stays (2+ weeks), I split the reservations..............I enjoy the 2-vacation feeling. On shorter trips, I like to be able to alternate resorts, knowing that I have the accommodations I want locked up at 11 months (especially since both resorts have varied point structures).:thumbsup2
Only once in a great while have I bothered trying for a different resort at 7 months. :goodvibes

We own at SSR now and are looking to add on at BWV we too understand how important that 11 month window is especially during the Holiday season.
We want to be able to book our Christmas stay 11 months out so ya owning at 2 resorts could be benificial (if you like to Resort hop).pirate:

As of a few days ago, the minimum add-on for BLT was dropped back to the 25 pt level. Any member can add-on at this level for the time being, you do not have to be a BLT owner.

But we own at 2 resorts--BLT and VWL. I like both those resorts. I bought VWL resale (small contract) so I could add on just 112 at BLT--not the 160 minimum for new members. Between both, I can book a 1-bedroom for 2 nights at VWL and 3 nights at BLT every year and book at the 11 month window for each.

At the 7 month mark, I may decide to switch VWL to BLT, but if it doesn't come through, I will be at my two favorite resorts.

We own OKW since 1993 and BWV since 2006. Love being able to stay at both. I know it's not a good use of points but we have an abundance this year and we are using the OKW points for our CA trip.

The only thing better than owning 2 resorts is owning 5 resorts. ;)

There are only a couple of advantages to owning a particular resort, IMHO. The biggest is the 11-month advantage. The only other advantage, IMHO, is if there is a financial difference.

In fact, we chose both of our home resorts because of financial advantage. We initially bought an OKW resale because the combination of low initial cost and relatively low dues looked good to us. We bought an SSR add-on because DVC had a great incentive going at the time.

There is a little bit of an added administrative burden keeping up with two resorts, but it's no big deal. It would be a bigger deal if you had different UYs, but that's not the case with us.

We own at 2 because

1) when we bought in the first time, BWV wasn't available. Since we're instant gratification people, we bought in to the next best thing.

2) Since BWV has become available, we chose to add on at a 2nd so that we could have 11 month booking priority at both an MK and Epcot resort.

Does that mean you take 5 vacations a year? I'm insanely jealous! We own at 3 resorts because I take 3 vacations a year, each at a different "home" (DH only goes on 2). We own at OKW, because that's where we love to vacation in May. We own at BCV because that's where I love to stay in October, for the F&W festival. And since that's usually my solo trip. BCV is "my" hotel. Then we always spend Thanksgiving at HHI, so we just bought points there.

I was just teasing. And as I said in my post, we own at 3 resorts because we take 3 vacations a year. So I was guessing, teasingly, that therefore 5 resorts must mean 5 vacations a year. Sorry it wasn't clear.
