Split Stay and discount question

I currently have a split stay booked. The first four days are at POP and the last four days are at POLY. I booked our 8 day tickets on the POP reservation as this was our first check in. We did this as we could not afford the POLY for the entire stay. My husband doesn't really want to switch resorts but will because its a birthday trip for me. If a fall discount comes out it would make it affordable for us to stay at the POLY the entire trip (which would be great). I am assuming I would be able to go into my POLY reservation and change the dates to include the first four days, apply the discount add the tickets and cancel the POP stay. Am I right in thinking if my resort view room at the POLY wasn't available those first four nights then I would be out of luck??? If that is the case could I change my current POLY reservation now to include those first four nights and then if no fall discount happens I can change it back to just the last four? Or will Disney not accept the reservation because I have an overlapping reservation at POP? I would not be cancelling the POP reservation until I had secured the fall discount if there is one. The other odd thing I noticed is that if I try to book the 8th through the 16th I only get water view rooms, it says no resort view rooms are available for my stay. Yet i can book the 8th -9th with a resort view and then the 9th -16th as separate reservation with a resort view and its available for both. Why would this be? Hoping someone whose done this before has some advice.

When the discount is released it must be available to book as a new booking to get it applied even to an existing reservation. Disney only releases a select amount of rooms at the discount rate, so the discount could be available & rooms cool be available at rack rate but none available at discount. Booking a rack rate room might actually hurt your chances because you take away potential inventory that might be put on sale. You can do a back to back reservation of the exact same type room and request Disney keep you in the room if you can only get part of the stay on discount, they’re pretty good about that but of course it is not guaranteed.

Is your Poly stay stay a "ticketless" package? Did you pay a 1-night deposit (room only) or a $200 deposit?

As @gottalovepluto said above, to apply the discount, the dates must be available as a discount as if you were booking a new reservation. Having a room does not help you to apply the discount, and as pointed above, can actually hurt you by taking a room out of the inventory. They only discount rooms that are not "selling" well for that particular period.

I have had 2 reservations for the same dates while I sorted other things out and it has not been a problem. Just be mindful of the cancellation terms - at least 30 days for package reservations, and at least 8 days for room-only reservations.
