I swore there was a thread about this but I couldn't find it.

What benefit efforts are being done in your area? It might help to post some here in case folks are look for ways to contribute.

For INDY DISSers, there are 4 Benefit concerts coming up that should all be a good time:

The Indiana Wind Symphony will present a concert to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina on Saturday, September 17 at 2:00 P.M. on the lawn at the Barton Building, located at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue, Michigan Street and New Jersey Street across from the Athenaeum, 401 E Michigan St. Guest soloists will include tenor Ken Knowles. Contributions will benefit the Red Cross effort to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The concert is being present as part of Gumbo Aid, 2005, a series of 4 concerts being presented to for Hurricane Katrina Relief. Other concerts include Mojo and the Bayou Gypsies, a Cajun-Zydeco band from Louisiana at 8:00 P.M. on Thursday September 15th in the ballroom of the Indianapolis Marriott, 350 W. Maryland St. Also on tap is a performance by Badal Roy, formerly of the Miles Davis band, with Keni Washington, playing at the Chatterbox Tavern, 435 Massachusetts, Av at 10:30 p.m. on Friday September 16th and the Gumbo Aid New Orleans Relief Benefit Concert at the Rathskeller, 401 E. Michigan St. from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday September 18th.

I went to a benefit show with Velvet Revolver this past Tuesday. Every dime from ticket sales and bar revenue was donated to the tune of $250,000. Heard this morning that the bartenders and waittresses donated their tips to add another $8000 to the pot.

I'm going to a show tomorrow with 3 Doors Down. Although it's not a benefit, they are asking everyone to bring canned food, diapers, etc. Those guys lost/had major damage to their homes (they are from the Gulfport area), if you want to see a heartrenching video clip, visit their web site www.3doorsdown.com

A couple other radio stations in the area had fundraisers, and the local TV station did a telethon that raised $1M in pledges.

One of the local pet boarding/grooming places is ahving a fundraiser and supply drive for Noah's Wish next weekend.

We have 120 people coming in today to stay in Naval housing here in RI, and there's a few hundred staying at Camp Edwards in MA so a lot of coordination has been done to get the place ready for them.

Lots and lots of food drives, donation drives, transportation/fostering coordination for animals, etc.. I'm the point person for Red Cross donations in my building. We're working to send professionals to aid in all sorts of manners to the gulf coast. Pretty much what I'm sure every one else is doing. Also there's about 100 displaced college students transfering to colleges here. The school I work for is offering free tuition this semester, which is awesome considering it's an ivy league school and $$$$. I believe some faculty have been invited as visiting faculty at various schools.

There really are going to be some great stories come out of this mess. I for one am not at all disturbed (and in fact am kind of proud) by the fact that some of the relocated folks that have come here want to stay. It's like we have 10's of thousands of "foreign-exchange-students" all across the country.

Our area had a drive on Wednesday for the American Red Cross. We raised a little over $1 million. Last night, there was a benefit concert featuring Alabama. They raised $50,000. Pretty good!

Absolutely! a lot of the kids are from the area but there's a good many students from the South coming. I deal with students from all over at work but very few from the South so they really will be almost like foreign exchange students.

A good friend of mine is from Nola and his family is all there. My friend lives in NH now and fortunately his immediate family were all on a RV trip family reunion when the hurricane hit and will be coming to stay near him. He said the best thing about the situation and the people have to evacuate is that he'll be able to enjoy cajun food and Southern cooking to his heart's content again. Something not easily found in these parts :goodvibes

Thanks! My friend who's dad stayed on in NOLA is really good friends with some of them--he was in one of their weddings. They do a lot to give back to their community, and this tragedy is devastating to them. I was told that they were far more upset about the people in their communities who lost everything and will have a hard time rebuilding than losing their own homes.

I enjoy them, although I have to admit, the other three bands on the bill are a bit more my cup of tea.

I was thinking about buying "stuff" to donate, then decided I'd rather just give the cash.

Our town took a couple of families in. One family lives a block from us. Our schools are collecting $$ and things for these families.
