Belly Up to the Bar With Bendy and Her Friendies!!! Button Pics & New Thread Started!

Now I don't feel so bad for not understanding the judging :lmao:

I loved when Dick and Peggy did the commentating, they were so good and Dick could be very critical too.

Yay - finally caught up with all the posts - though the food pictures were all so mouth-watering that I raced to the kitchen halfway through for some cookies and peanut butter sandwich. I've never seen a steak the size of the Tramonto one -it's like eating a quarter of a cow! I assume one shares that dish?

Shovan -the Vampire Bite cookies look scrumptious. If they tasted as good as they looked could you please post the recipe, when you have time? I fill my son's cookie jar every week and that's my time to try new cookie recipes. The jar goes into his room (after I've sampled a couple cookies), so I'm not tempted by them during the week. :headache: Although I'm not being obsessive about it, I'm still sticking to my WW program, more or less, and am down 22# now. Of course, that's a drop in the barrel compared to where I need to be :rolleyes1:

Epcot Food and Wine: I've got some of my concert schedule for next October and it's not looking good as far as free time goes. I'd definitely have to get a leave of absence to go down there. Not ruling it out yet and am keeping my eyes open for deals - like maybe a dining plan for Canadians in Sept/October -(as I don't have a Disney Visa card.) If I can't make it, I'll be counting on you guys to bring back recipes. If they have a better F & W Festival cookbook than last year's, I'm also happy to pay somebody to purchase it and send it to me in Canada. For some reason, starting last year, Disney merchandise no longer wanted to sell these books via mail order :sad2:

There's possibly some good news on my travel horizon. One reason I was so busy, was that I put together an attractive little booklet with the aim of persuading cruise ship agencies that people on a cruise would love nothing better than to attend my Food in History or Music Appreciation lectures. Though I worked on a cruise ship as an entertainer for a summer, I would love to be a speaker on board ship. It's a very hard field to get into and it doesn't pay BUT you get to travel. The good news is I've already been contacted by one of the agencies offering me 5 different Transatlantic and Mediterranean cruises on Celebrity and RCL for April and May. The terrible news is that I have to turn them all down because I can't afford to take a leave from work. :sad1:
As bad as it looks to turn them down, I have hope they'll offer me something for the summer when I'm free. A second agency (Sixth Star Entertainment - who book for loads of cruise ships) is interested enough to have booked a 30 minute phone interview with me next week. So I'm hopeful there as well.

a new random topic ...

I love figure skating although I loved it much more under the 6.0 system when skaters were free to choreograph their programs in a more artistic manner.

I hate ... I loathe ... I abhor the NBC commentators for figure skating. Scott Hamilton and Sandra Bezic say the same things over and over again and don't understand the CoP and can't explain it to the viewing audience any better than I could.

I miss Dick Button and Peggy Flemming ... they were snarky and fun and informative.
ICK!! I tremble for the Olympic broadcast. :lmao:

Bendy - those of us living in Vancouver are doing more than trembling in regards to the upcoming Winter Olympics. Not only is it costing us taxpayers a fortune (1 billion in security alone :scared: ) but a lot of the downtown core will be closed off for over a month. The Olympic Committee has appropriated all the theaters for about four weeks - yet are so disorganized that they don't actually know what acts will be booked in them - if any. They just want to have the option of having the theaters. That's bad news for those of us working in the entertainment business because it means we don't have anywhere to give concerts during that time. They haven't even decided if they're going to use an orchestra for the opening ceremonies so there may be few financial benefits for most of us. I can't even fathom why any city would want to host the Olympic Games -especially the Winter games.

This sounds like a fun and promising way to spend your summer. Good luck on that phone interview! :thumbsup2

Foodie Alert!

Vegas Uncork'd

Is anyone planning on going to these Las Vegas events in May?! If so, PLEASE take notes and LOTS of pictures. :cloud9: This is something we would definitely be interested in, but can't swing it this year. :sad1: Thanks! :goodvibes

Ooooh! This looks totally awesome. I'll have to show this to Drew. No doubt I will be wiping drool from his mouth since some of his favorites will be there. Its too bad the masters dinners are already sold out (well, most of them). I probably would have tried to weasel this one past Fred (with much kicking and screaming). We've been bucking to go to Vegas lately anyway. Oh well...hope someone else is going and reports back. I'm totally surprised that most of the events are pretty reasonably priced.

Now I don't feel so bad for not understanding the judging :lmao:

I loved when Dick and Peggy did the commentating, they were so good and Dick could be very critical too.

I liked Dick and Peggy because they were able to critique everyone's programs - they didn't fawn over US skaters and then say next to nothing about skaters from other countries. They also were able to find something more to say than:

He / she is a complete skater
This program is all about jumps
Wow!
Amazing!
Unbelievable!

While Dick and Peggy weren't really able to discuss the CoP, they were great when it came to explaining how one jump or spin differed from another. They explained edging and inside / outside edges and why some jumps are considered "easier" than others. And I loved their ocassional snarkiness ... Jay still quotes Dick Button from ten years ago during a men's competition where the skater basically imploded and after his third fall he said, "Now we're just waiting for it to end." :lmao::rotfl2:

I never realized that Disney would sell those cookbooks via snailmail. Anyhoo ... if you're not able to attend I'd be happy to pick up a cookbook for you. But I have to ask ... do you want one like they had last year which was a dismal failure in my opinion. Only 20 recipes and it was more like a mini-scrapbook than a cookbook. First time in years that we didn't purchase one.

:scared1: Crazy! I had no idea that getting ready for the Big O was that awful. I admit that I'd love to attend ... and we talked about coming to Vancouver just for a week in February to do so, but can't really pull it off in the current economy. I do hope it all turns out OK for everyone and that there a minimal headaches and financial misfortunes.

We saw something about that last year but missed it by a few weeks. Sounds great, doesn't it? I actually think some of the events are pretty reasonably priced, all things considered. If our luck turns and we can swing a trip next May for Jay's birthday we'd be in Vegas during next year's events ... :cloud9:

It feels strange and a little sad to have no more Disney reviews to work on for the next six months or so. I guess we OD'd on food last year because it felt like I was writing reviews all the time and now I've got nothing left to work on except for a random Stinktown dinner here or there.

I'm relying on you guys to help me fill the void until this fall! :grouphug:

Has anyone read the fine print about the Birthday Fun Card option that Disney is providing in lieu of theme park admission on your actual bithday if you already have a ticket?

Jay and I were so naive as to think we could take the $75 gift card and use it to pay for breakfast at CRT (I've always wanted to eat in the castle and thought it might be fun on my birthday ... meh, we've changed our minds).

Anyway ... should you chose not to take free admittance to a park on your special day Disney offers the following options:

1) The birthday fun card equal to the amount of a single day park pass ($75)
2) Birthday Fastpass exchange card for various rides around the park (not a guarantee and only available through 11am)
3) A 1-day Magic Your Way Park Ticket good for use on one day - must be used prior to your next birthday

The gift card option seemed like the best one for us ... we're not planning on visiting WDW before 2011 after this fall so option three won't work and the fastpass option isn't any good if members of your party can't jump the line along with you.

But check out all the exclusions on the gift card:

1) not eligible for food or drink or alcohol or spa products or personal products, hair braiding, bibbidity bobbidity, face painting, hair braiding, etc.
2) not eligible at almost every venue in DTD and Epcot that isn't in some way managed or owned by Disney (this does make sense but when reading through the list it gets funny after a while)
3) No cash back on the difference of purchase vs balance
4) Only good at participating locations (sort of a redundant point but it makes me wonder just where you can use it ... nowhere? ;))

Where do you think it can actually be used? I thought for sure we could use it for a meal (we'd happily pay out of pocket if we wanted booze) or maybe even for some F&W snacking. I wonder now if we could use it to purchase food & wine merchandise or if the fact that the word "food" would likely be included in said purchase would actually disqualify it under the terms of the exclusions? :rotfl2:

I heard about the exclusion too and was like...really, they should just tell us where we CAN use the card! :sad2: My guess is that once F&W starts, we'll find out if we can use it for the festival merchandise offerings. I'd hate to not know until the day of though.

I agree - rather than spending all the time telling us where it isn't accepted they'd be better off telling us where it can be used.

Jay said it sounds a lot like Itchy and Scratchy money, which no one at Itchy & Scratchy land would accept. :lmao:

Monday, March 23rd - Who Doesn't Enjoy a Beer or Two or Four at Lunch?

Interestingly enough, or perhaps not, Jay was the one who introduced me to the Historic St. Charles Main Street area when we were dating many many moons ago. It's located roughly 30 minutes west of downtown St. Louis, right on the banks of the odorous Missouri River. The community was founded in 1769 by French settlers and it has the distinction of serving as Missouri's first state capital. The area has been beautifully preserved and now the mile-long stretch of Main Street houses arts and crap shops, pseudo-antique dealers, one or two Missouri winery outlets, and a few random cafes and restaurants, all of which serve surprisingly tasty foods. The area is very popular with locals and tourists and really gets hopping during summer and fall, when numerous festivals and re-enactments are held there.

Trailhead Brewing Company is our absolute favorite restaurant in the historic district - we love having lunch here, especially in warm weather months when we can dine outside and watch the world go by. Trailhead brews their own beer - they have five constants that are always available and then one seasonal beer that they rotate out. The food is good ol' American brew-pub fare - servings are generous and affordably priced.

Since Jay and I took the day off from work on Monday and had a leftover Trailhead gift card burning a hole in our pockets, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to pay one of our favorite establishments a visit. We've tried many different items on their menu over the years but have definite favorites and today was all about those favorites. To start the meal off on the right foot we ordered an appetizer from the Brewery Delight section of the menu:

Fresh Hot Pretzels Served with Ballpark and Brown Mustard
P3230004.jpg

Yum! These never disappoint - hot, fresh, chewy, and lightly salted they taste wonderful with just a dab of spicy brown mustard. I always hold the ballpark (read: cheap and yellow) mustard in reserve for the fries I order with my sandwedge. Hey, you know what else tastes great with these pretzels?

BEER!!!!!!!!!!

Jay ordered Trailhead's seasonal brew which was an Irish Ale in honor of St. Patrick's Day. The menu description for this beer read as follows: This dark amber ale has a definite malt accent, well rounded flavor, and soft fruitiness. By using five different types of malt and three varieties of hops in this recipe, a complex weave of bitterness, flavor, and aroma is created in this Celtic Beer.

Wow.

That's quite a pimp for a beer. :lmao:

And to quote our buddy Homer Simpson, "it was a very fine beer."

You may be wondering what I ordered if Jay opted for the Irish Ale, which you might think would be more to my taste. I shocked my spouse and myself by ordering the Missouri Brown Dark Ale - brewed with five malts to create a well rounded, caramel and coffee flavored ale. It was delicious and I think I now have a new favorite at Trailhead.

Just for reference, the other beers they brew there include a Blond Ale, Trailhead Red Amber Ale, Riverboat Raspberry, and Old Courthouse Stout. Sometimes when Jay and I lunch at Trailhead we order the beer sampler so that we can have small portions of all six brews but on this visit we stuck to pints (two each ... yeah, we needed a nap by the time we got home).

For my lunch entree I ordered my all-time favorite sandwedge ... I've never found a club sandwich anywhere to compare with this one.

The Club Sandwich

Turkey, ham, bacon, prime rib, three different cheeses, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise served with a choice of fries, baked beans, cole slaw, or potato salad. They also include a monster dill pickle which I'd already started chowing on before I remembered to take a picture.

Jay ordered the Smoked Brisket Sandwich which is served with lots of BBQ sauce and cheddar cheese. If he can ever be said to have a favorite item that he will order ad nauseum like I do, it's this sandwich.

Smoked Brisket

As you can see, both servings were quite large. We ate everything but had no room for dessert, which is typically what happens when we eat at Trailhead. And to be honest, their dessert menu strikes us as pretty boring so we're not disappointed to not have any sweets. Believe it or not we usually only have dessert after dinner on vacation - it just doesn't happen much here at home unless it's a special ocassion or a really good restaurant ... or if my parasitic twin is awake. :lmao:

And there you have it ... a most satisfying lunch on a day when everyone else was working. Ahhhhh, it's good to be lazy, if only for a day. If any of you fine folk are ever in the Stinktown area and would like to share a casual meal and a good brew with your pal Bendy and her indulgent hubby Jay, let us know. We'd love to share some good times with you at Trailhead!

This looks delicious! Your club looks yummy too...although I'm totally craving some greasy cheesy goodness at the moment. I wish Jay's meal could be transported through the computer screen. I'm having a there's nothing to eat in this darn house day. I'm also too lazy to go out and get something. Great food porn as always. Its taking the edge off my hunger pangs.

Those look like some mighty good sandwiches! Funny you should invite everyone to Stinktown--today whogirl asked me how long it would take to drive to Missouri! I think she saw a commercial for Branson, though.

I love a good club sandwedge and that one looks incredible!:thumbsup2

Best club I've ever had. Ever. :thumbsup2

I'd love to join you at the Trailhead, wish I had to travel to St Louis for some reason!

Well, if you ever have the misfortune to be in Stinktown let us know. Actually there's a fabulous place downtown ... The Tap Room ... that makes Trailhead look like a pit.

Jay just told me today he wished he was eating that brisket sandwich right now. I know all about that "there's nothing here to eat" problem. Drives me crazy. :lmao:

How cute ... poor Whogirl; she'd probably be disappointed if you just brought her to Stinktown. Although ... the Arch is pretty cool and we do have a Six Flags.

:scared::scared::scared:

One trip to the one in Georgia was enough for me!

I haven't been to the one here in nearly 20 years and Jay has never been. At this point we both have the attitude that it can't possibly compare to WDW so why bother? We'd be happier keeping the price of admission for ourselves. :rotfl:

So dare I ask what happened in Georgia?
