Belly Showing in Prom Dress

I middle-aged and I don't think the belly button or midriff is provocative.

What I grapple with is what looks "classy" as a formal occasion. I have seen two piece dresses that look formal and I've seen some that look downright tacky. The same could be said for many of the one-piece prom dresses that are out there. Some off them look ridiculous.

Everyone has an idea in their mind, based on how they were raise, as what constitutes appropriate dress for various occasions. Proms historically have been long, flowing gowns. Over time, society's perception and rules about what's appropriate definitely change and the "old" folks have a little trouble there adjusting their ideals on that.

I think it really all comes down to good taste. There are some people that can pick the *right* two-piece dress and pull it off beautifully. And there are some, as evidenced by my Facebook feed, that have no idea that they look horrible in something and it's not right for them (this goes for "normal" prom dresses also).

To me, the prom will always be the ONE formal occasion in high school where you display elegance, formality, "pomp and circumstance," at the end of your high school tenure. No matter what the styles are, I think everyone should strive to look formal and elegant. Unfortunately, many girls in the age range (DD included back in her day) want to look like something off a reality TV show. There's a happy medium.

Again, no problems here with a two-piece prom gown, but keep it classy!

These are what some of you are all up in arms about? It must be hard walking around with the weight of all those pearls you have to clutch when you see one. I've seen more skin at the local park in the summer.

I like most of those and think that most are elegant.

The two piece formal wear is straight off the runway. It was almost the theme during the fall shows. Even the slightly more conservative, classic houses like Chanel had some midriff baring outfits. No, I would not encourage my daughter to wear this to an interview, even if it is a Chanel suit, but to blame the midriff look on trashy stars is wrong. It was introduced on the runway as this year's "look." Although I think the pink and white one is gorgeous for a young professional going out on the town.

I don't have time to search for examples right now but in general terms I'd say dresses that are not cut down to ....., slits that are not cut up to..., bits are covered and butt cracks are not exposed. And dresses that are fitted properly. Strapless is fine if there is not spillage, fitted is fine if the seams don't look like they might pop at any second.

Just posting (to the original post) that I seriously doubt they're on the way back. I wore a two piece dress to my senior prom in 2000. They seemed to be kind of new then as none of the schools had policies against them. Mine didn't show a lot of skin between. It was more like a short tankini with a skirt. I loved that dress!

I think it's only the op that may be clutching pearls. I think many of the dresses in your link are cute. My issue is when you have short(i.e. crotch length), tight and strapless/backless all in one dress.

There were 2 or 3 girls in dresses like that at my dd's prom on friday. I know one of the girls. She has an identical twin who was in a very cute dress. This girl seems to always push the envelope.

There are few other than the OP. I do agree that there are dresses that push the envelope, but the majority of the 2 pieces that I have seen in stores are not, just like in the link there are only a few that I would say are a little mature looking for a teen prom.
I think those making the general comment about 2 pieces being inappropriate haven't actually seen them, they are just picturing it in their heads with bikini tops and low cut skirts.

I have friends from Egypt and she defines anything that shows more than her face, ankles/feet and wrists/arms too revaling for her (but has told me I look nice in outfits which reveal MUCH more than that on me).
I doubt you fall along the lines of thinking that anything beyond a bare ankle is too much, as so many in the mid east and some elsewhere do---and yet clearly you feel some belly showing IS too much? My DH has relatives who are Orthodox Jews and knees and elbows are too revealing.

ok, well what parts of the body do you feel should be covered for a dress to be acceptable or pretty or formal or whatever term you want to use? I mean that you feel should be covered by other people. not for one you wear yourself?
Is it OK to show shooulders OR midreff but not both? Is it specific body parts being seen that you take issue with? Or an overall amount of skin regarless od which skin?
I really find it fascinating--given that it bugged you enough to start a thread about it.

There has been the insinuation, actually more than insinuation, that the teens that wear more "revealing" clothing like a belly button showing are to be shamed.

I just don't get the more prudish posters actually admitting they sit over their facebook pages and cluck, cluck over what other young ladies chose to wear to the prom, judging them and their character just because it is not "their" style.

Oh yes, there are critical people in every generation who are sure that the main ills of the world are related to clothing styles--I am always curious as to how they rationalize their views though (where they draw lines and why they draw them wher ethey do, etc) (not that OP said the ills of the world are related ot prom dresses! But she and a few others do seem to insinuate that teens wearing certain styles says something negative about them)


My grandmother is an amazing seamstress--and my mom was a teen in the late 60s when all sorts of very short and very "odd" things were the style---my grandmother made her so many outfits that looked like they came right from whereever Cher shopped. She tells the story of the red, plastic, mini dress that my grandfather got mad at her for making becuase it was SO short--and how she stodd up for my mom and made it anyway. This is the same woman who challenged the school board when my mom was in second grade and got the rule saying girls could not wear pants changed.
