Belly Showing in Prom Dress

No. That's not the truth at all. You went right to demanding for me to "lighten up" and "who cares". That is what I was commenting on.

Disagree. But disagree like a big girl, please.

Interesting. "Disagree like a big girl" OK. As the mom of a young woman not far removed from prom days, I'm admittedly sensitive to people who try to shame these young women. I say, let them have fun, dress as they choose, and enjoy this time in their lives. They should ignore the body shamers and wear what makes them feel beautiful.

As I stated (maybe not clearly enough), the one mid driff prom dress photo I've seen was beautiful and not at all inappropriate.

Eh, at least half wore bare mid drift dresses to the 8th grade dance last year. I live in an area that really pushes the envelope. Backless, cutouts, bare bellies - it's one night.

It's a style, like the big hair of the 80's, or the long haired guys of the 70's.

It will disappear, and be replaced with something else that people will complain about.

It's no more provocative than the bikinis those same girls will wear to the beach the next day or week.

And teenage girls don't want to look like classic beauties-- they want to look like part of the time they're in.

Her mid drift was beautiful? Now that I don't understand. She is a teenager. It just seems very provocative.

Showing an inch or 2 off mid drift is provocotive? Actually the 2 piece dresses I've seen actually cover up more than a lot of others. No cleavage showing, not short enough to almost see underwear and not tight enough to seem like it'll explode any second.

If my dd had wanted a 2 piece I would have let her get one. She would have looked beautiful in it but she also has the figure to pull it off.

I think part of the issue with many women in general is they don't dress to compliment their body type.

It really depends on the dress. Most of the 2 piece dresses I've seen were pretty and covered more than the strapless ones that look like they're ready to fall off half the time.

But after reading this, it sounds like some of the 2 piece ones are pushing the envelope more than the ones I have seen.

My daughter is too young for her school's prom, but did go to Court Warming a couple months ago. She actually chose a dress with lots of coverage. Well, once I got over how short it was. ;) But she wears spandex shorts underneath, so I really had no complaint at all.

Provacative? Lol. Maybe some but at dd's prom last week the two piece dresses were the least provocative of the bunch.

Dd's dress was two piece. It showed about two inches of her belly including her belly button (had to show the belly button ring, ya know). It had a flowing skirt and a high neck. A friend of her's had one with more belly showing but similar high neck. At the senior walk I saw skirts "slit up to there" and necklines "down to there" but honestly they all looked beautiful and happy and quite comfortable in their own skin so I say more power to them all. Regardless of their size, shape or lack of a flat belly they all deserve to feel beautiful and it looked like they did.

HAH... there was a time that showing elbows, wrists, or ankles was also considered 'provocative'.

Interesting choice of word... Provocative. Codeword for shaming young women. Frankly it is not the job of a woman to be worried about provoking young men with a prom dress that shows some tummy, I would say that is the job of the parent of the boy to teach them respect no matter what someone is wearing... or if 'gasp' their ankle gets exposed

its one thing to be dressing as discussed in this thread when its a 16 or older teenager but when its 8 year olds theres something a bit wrong. The big thing here in Ireland is First Holy Communion Dresses. The kids are approx 7 or 8 years old. Communion dresses have always been kinda like a prom dress, but more on the Disney princess style. Over the top yes but still age appropriate as in the girls still look like little girls. Some photos I have seen this year are heading towards the prom style / sexy type dresses, not the cute princess dresses. Im talking about strapless long dresses more like a wedding dress, on 8 year olds!!! I wouldnt be surprised if the 2 piece dress is also around.

If you are 16 and wearing something that looks like a red sequined bra and the top of your butt crack is showing from your low dropping skirt, I do believe there should some shame involved.

I am not talking about one or two inches showing. I am talking about the bustier type tops.

But, alas, it is 2016. Anything goes. You aren't allowed to comment on anything without a politically correct word like "body shaming" being thrown at you :rotfl:

In 20 years, the teenagers will be wearing pasties and thongs to the prom and it will be ok because they feel confident and beautiful:thumbsup2

Ugh. What are their parents thinking?

Yes. Some really are.

But I am relieved that people aren't understanding what I am saying, because maybe it is just a regional thing and (hopefully) not widespread.

Interesting details added to the dress. I thought we were talking about an entire style of dresses that show the tummy area or midriff. So every girl on your face book feed last night was wearing a red sequin bra top and showing but crack that is also a bustier... or are you annoyed at a single dress? Up until now it seemed your disapproval was directed at a entire style? Your title of the thread simply mentions a belly showing, you also only talk about generalized two piece dresses... now all of a sudden you have a specific dress?

Not all of a sudden at all. Actually, my initial post stated: "these pretty girls really don't need to be wearing bikinis on the top and skirts on the bottom."

There were several girls wearing this style.

I sure hope it's a trend that is out of here soon. Looks trashy to me.

Thanks for your input. Neat to see all different opinions on this subject.

Jeez Louise, if you're going to argue about these 2 piece dresses, and the type and amount of anatomy that's revealed, at least spell it right. It's MIDRIFF. One word. No T.

Just like any other style of dress, some look good, others are slutty, and some girls choose styles that don't flatter their body type. This isn't new. I do wonder about the mothers that allow their DDs to wear some of the more provocative outfits. But I've seen some MIDRIFF baring dresses that were very chic.
