Belgian Waffle Maker? Need help from waffle people!

Yeah, I feel ya on the Waring but this kid can't afford that. He's doing odd jobs for money while he goes to high school. He'll be doing well to get the money together for this one by the weekend. I'm going to throw in the wrapping paper and provide transportation for him but it's time they(high schoolers) take responsibility for their own Mother's Day gifts or just spend the day with their moms doing chores and liking it, kwim?

Maybe I'll get the Waring for here. lol!

We have a Waring Belgian and my dad has the Waring regular waffle iron. Love them both!

For the mix, try adding a little vanilla extract to the batter. I also add a pinch of sugar (to bisquick recipe on box).

My dad uses a recipe very much like the insane greatness posted above and it really is better than mine made with the mix, but he's retired and has no kids!!!

I have this one and love, love, love it! So easy and flips to make two at a time. It is a breeze! :thumbsup2

What is best mix for a Belgian Waffle Maker and what else do we need?
My son's friend asked for help with a gift for his mother-she wants a Belgian Waffle Maker. I've found a good deal on a Black and Decker maker but what else does this kid need to provide so his mom can make waffles when she opens her gift? I've read some reviews online that suggest lots of oil on the cooking surfaces so I'll have him get a spray, a mix, butter and syrup. Ideas? suggestions? Strawberries maybe? Help please! I'm not a waffle eater.

I would just have him get the waffle maker and a mix. Like others here, we prefer the Krusteaz mix. We like both the regular pancake/waffle mix as well as the belgian waffle mix. Costco & Sams Club usually ahve a giant bag of the mix for about $6. It is a really great deal.

I wouldn't go crazy with the extras as those are really personal preferences. For instance we always put vanilla and sprinkles (like the ones you put on cupcakes) in our mix but there are some people who may not like that. As it is a gift I would go with anyitems that require refrigeration, etc. I would assume that they probably already have the ingredients need other than the mix!

I was at Target yesterday and saw a waffle maker that flips over for $29.99. I think it was an Oster brand.

I am intrigued by the separating the eggs & whipping the whites to a peak - does anyone have a Belgian waffle recipe using this method?

I've used this Emeril recipe but find that it's a lot of work. The other recipe linked above makes very similar waffles with a lot less trouble.

Basically take ANY reicpe and separate the egg whites from the yolks. Mix yolks in batter as normal.

Beat the egg whites until foamy and form stiff peaks. Add into batter and cut gently in, it will be lumpy and float to the top of the batter. Just make sure you scoop batter from bottom of bowl to get enough of both batter and lumpy egg whites - not all of just one.

The lumpy egg whites make the waffle light and airy on the inside while crunchy on the outside. I also substitute seltzer for some of the milk to make it even lighter and fluffier and less fattening. Lol. But that is our preference. Others might like the waffle denser.

Have a flip style and pretty much any of the everyday mixes will work. As for flavoring, diffidently pay the few bucks more and get real maple, not the imitation.

I have the waring single and hae used it for our camping group for about 5 years. I just bought the double waring. I like it, but it takes a lot longer, so I always go back to the single.
I got them both at Sam's Club.

I use the Krusteaz pancake mix and use the waffle recipe on the back and everyone likes it. I also order a spray (6 cans at a time, and I split them with 2 others) called Waffle Off, that all the hotels ues. It doesn't leave a sticky film like the market sprays, on the machine, and the waffles always come off nicely.

This is exactly what I was told oh so many years ago by a Brunch Chef! Just add a little sugar and vanilla and your waffles from a mix will taste fantastic! I have also been known to add cinnamon, mini chocolate chips and even chocolate syrup! We love our waffles! I have a flip style from Costco! This is a great gift and will be appreciated for many years!

I have a Waring Professional Flip over type Belgian waffle maker and always use the Golden Malted mix. I order it online. Makes waffles just like the restaurants make!

Found a GE flip model on sale at WalMart for $30, marked down from $50. They had the Black and Decker for $20 while it was on sale at Kohls for $27. The GE was definitely an upgrade, stainless steel and a metal handle instead of plastic with a pouring cup to measure the batter and a more durable drip tray. I also found a sale at WalMart on their maple syrup so she's getting a small bottle of that. Total sale $40 and I think it's a pretty nice MD gift.
Didn't see the Waring anywhere we shopped. The son didn't have the funds for that anyway. Thanks for all the help!!! Deed is done.

I made these this morning using the recipe that was mentioned earlier (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/40-a-day/waffle-of-insane-greatness-recipe/index.html). I tripled the recipe and substituted orange flavored seltzer for 1/3 of the butter milk and whipped the egg whites separately as noted below.

THESE WERE THE BEST BELGIAN WAFFLES SO FAR!! my family went crazy over them.

Thanks to everyone who posted about this :cool1:

my only tip is to make sure the waffle maker can be turned over..that's the key to a good waffle maker.

Other than that...there are many mixes out there. I'd buy a box of Krusteaz + a good maple syrup.

I second the Krusteaz Belgian Waffle mix. I prefer to use milk instead of the water. Gives it a little more nutritional value and tastes good.

I am curious why the waffle makers need to turn over. :confused3 Mine does flip over, but I'm not sure how that makes it better.

My DH is a VERY picky waffle guy. We have gone through about a million different mixes, plus many, many homemade mixes. Best we have found...if you have a Meijer...their Malted Waffle Mix, with a little added vanilla is the best!

I helps them cook evenly. It's a gravity thing, kwim? The side that is down is heavy on the cooking surface so it cooks faster.

Yeah, but if it doesn't flip over there is still a down side, right?

The flip over kind seems to make the waffle lighter. You start with it not flipped, put the batter in and that starts cooking immediately, Then when you flip it, it forces the batter down, and seems to put some more air in. The waffles I used to make with my non flip seemed denser. I like the lighter ones.
